hello all, i have a cayenne with a mil on, it has a fault code p1372 valve lift control, bank 1.

in all of porsche glory there is nothing for description anywhere and test plans. has anyone

run into something of this sort ever, any help or direction would be greatly appreciated thanks.

P1372 Valve lift control, above limit value

Note:

- For this diagnostic, the cylinder preceding in the firing order can also be affected.

- If misfires are entered simultaneously (P0300 to P0308), these must be worked through first.

- If only valve lift errors are entered, please also check the cylinders preceding in the firing order.

Example: If the valve lift error for cylinder 4 (bank 2) is entered, the mechanism of the valve lift switching of cylinder 2 (bank 1) is also to be checked.

- Valve lift error detected via evaluation of rough running, similar to detecting misfiring.

- Parity check errors during valve lift control only entered together with cylinder-specific faults.

Possible fault causes

- Valve(s) of a cylinder stay jammed in large stroke

- Valves of different cylinders stay jammed in large stroke (parity check error)

thank you for that fast response, i have no misfire and the car does not run rough, apparently this is also happening intermittently because the light has come and go for a couple weeks. thanks again

I understand this post is a bit dated now, but I have recently had the same code (P1372) thrown on my 2008 Cayenne GTS. I ran the code with my VAG-COM as it was able to read several control modules I never knew it could do.

 

Anyway, the vehicle has 89,XXX KM and ran fine until I came off an aggressive highway drive to a stop. MIL came on, idle was rough, but achieved same fuel mileage and felt same power. I cleared the MIL and it stayed off for a couple of days. I found that only when I drove aggressively the MIL would come on after several drives. If I drove it easy or the wife drove it, no MIL until eventually I got back to driving it a bit agressive.

 

I changed on plugs and coils, as it was due anyway. Sprayed MAF cleaner on sensors, checked hard plastic vent tubes on front and rear of engine valve covers. Front had small crack that I repaired. Sprayed intake valve cleaner directly into throttle body, as well as removed throttle body to clean thoroughly. .... still have check engine light, BUT the rough idle is gone and it only seems to idle a bit lower than normal from how I recall.

 

When I was at the Porsche dealer discussing with the part personnel he mentioned a common failure are the camshaft valve actuators/solenoids that are within the valve covers on the backside of the engine banks. Part number he gave me was 94810530405. He explained it as not being able to engage variocam and causing power loss, rough idle, etc.

 

Anyway, it seems this may be the problem. What I want to know is if anyone knows specifically HOW to test this electronic actuator? They cost about $300+ each, plus valve cover gaskets. I am mechanically inclined and intend to do the job myself, but I don't want to start replacing expensive components without a way to test their function first.

 

Any input is appreciated and if I do the job I will follow up to confirm the fix or not. The P1372 code seems odd, as I thought if the actuator did fail or were stuck somehow it would have its own specific code for it, whereas P1372 valve lift control is generic??? Also, worth mention, I reside in Ontario and it's not frigindly cold, but has been about 25F to 60F during the day. The oil I used was LubroMoly 5w40 A40 spec for Porsche. I heard some people discuss using a thinner 0w40 oil as this can cause the actuator to stick??? I changed the oil and filter 4,000km ago now.

I've been receiving codes P1372, P1353 and P2404 on my 2008 Cayenne Turbo.  I've tried clearing them and they keep coming back within 10miles.  After running for 50-75 miles or so, the following codes appear, I assume they are caused by the first two: P0174 P0172 P0300 P0424 P0301 P0302.  I took into the dealership to get it fixed. They said I needed replace my camshafts (948-105-051-14) Hydraulic Valve (948-105-304-07) and Valve Assembly (948-105-308-03) on both sides for a grand total “starting at” $7400.  It sounded like it was a partial exploratory expedition.  I said no, and asked for alternatives.  The tech told the service manager they it could be sludge buildup causing the camshaft to be out of sync and I could try some type of oil additive to see if it would clear up.  I did try Seafoam in the oil (yes I know) for 200 miles with no change.  I also changed my gas cap in hopes 2404 would clear up, didn’t work.  I plan to take it into another shop tomorrow.

 

I’ve read the diagnostic information Loren provided above but not sure what the fix is or if the other codes tells a different story.

MY2008 started DFI for Cayenne V8 engines - so different fault codes and meanings (in some cases).

 

P1353 Valve lift control cylinder X - small lift

Possible fault causes:

- Fuel injector faulty or borderline (opens too late/ not long enough/ not enough/ leaking)
- Valve lifter of the specified cylinder faulty (intake valve of the specified cylinder gets stuck during the small lift)

 

P1372 Valve lift control, bank 1

Possible fault causes:

- Insufficient oil supply for faulty bank 1 (e.g., due to faulty scavenging restrictor in the cylinder head, dirt in the oil circuit, ... )
- Greatly differing exhaust backpressure values between the banks (e.g., due to constricted or blocked opening of an exhaust branch)
- Loose contact or corrosion on connectors or lines
- Solenoid hydraulic valve for valve lift control on bank 1 faulty
- Incorrectly adjusted timing of the intake or exhaust camshaft of a bank

- An oxygen sensor is aged or faulty

 

P2404 Leakage diagnosis pump, Reed switch

Possible fault causes:

- Vacuum system leaking
- The system consists of the mechanical vacuum pump (on the vehicle engine), the leakage diagnosis pump, the intake pipe switch-over valve and, where appropriate, the exhaust flaps in the rear muffler
- Vacuum pump has mechanical fault
- Tank vent valve stuck in closed position
- Purge-air line between tank vent valve and carbon canister blocked
- Short circuit to B+/ground or open circuit in signal line
- Leakage diagnosis pump faulty

I have a 2009 Cayenne GTS and I'm having the same issue where the only code is P1372 is showing on my iCarsoft  POR II.  I took it to a well respected independent and they replaced the Camshaft Solenoid Adjuster, about 10 months ago and the code hadn't re-fired again until today.  Could this really be caused by a vacuum leak?  Porsche recommends changing the camshaft actuator which could be done under my EasyCare extended warranty but I fear if the actuator is not faulty, the warranty company won't pay for the repair.

I have a '09 GTS and have had this problem on-off for over 16months, after 3 trips to the dealership (including the last trip which was a 3month stay as they worked with PNA engineering) and replacing almost everything possibly imaginable (Injectors, o2 sensors, solenoid, intake housing, hydraulic valve/gaskets etc) they finally resolved it by replacing the actual lifters- they may appear functional, but a small delay in switching and that will trigger the fault. 

 

hope this helps others that may not be able to get this resolved.
