Cold Air Intake

I get my 987 S in less than 10 days. My last 986 had a cold air intake installed. The sound of the air getting sucked into the intake was awesome. Over 5000 RPM it sounded even better.

I want to do the same on my 987 but my rep tells me that the baffles, exhaust, etc have been redone and that the car is louder than before. He says installing the cold air intake may make it that much louder. I dont mind the sound ( :) ) but he also warned me of the check engine light coming on. I remember on my 986 I was told the same but I never had that problem in the 3 years I owned it.

I have test driven the 987 S and it sounds different. Any ideas on how a cold air intake will affect this new setup? Or, if the check engine light is old news that I need not worry about.

I am thinking of getting an EVO COld Air Intake. Any thoughts on this?

I have not been in the engine compartment of a 987 yet, just seen drawings. The air box is way different than a 986. Have no idea if the 986 EVO unit will even work on a 987.

I spoke with EVO. They said they will have an intake out for the 987/S in two months. Should sound relatively the same. It is the same engine. And yes the EVO sound is awesome, I have one. :cheers:

And no check engine lights in over 2 1/2 yrs on my "S". The filter just has to be maintain properly.

How often did you clean out the filter? Isnt it fairly well consealed as to not suck up too much outside dirt?

I clean mine every 6-8 months. I have a BMC twin conical filter as well. Better quality and easier to clean than the filter that comes with the EVO kit. Its not really concealed from the outside. If you look closely in the air intake you can see the filter. If you don't clean it regularly you will lose horsepower, just like any other filter that gets too dirty.

I should say really every 6 months I keep it pretty clean.

I have a EVO air intake kit, could you tell which BMC filter you used to replace the EVO one specifically, with regard to size type etc. A link would be even better.

I don't think it has. If you want to use a K&N just measure the dimensions of the EVO filter and the flange. Match those measurements with a K&N and it should work fine. The B&M are very good quality and clean much easier then the stock EVO. The BMC have wide selection of different filters as well and from what I remember the BMC dimensions match with the EVO better.

Finally got to see the air box on a 987 S. Way different than a 986. The stock filter is round and not flat.

Do you have a pic of the actual filter (inside the airbox)? This change, definitely aids in the 987 sounds (maybe power as well).

I wanted to open it up but Peter ran the show at the 987 tech session we had 2 days ago. Looked like you removed 2 screws.

During the tech session I went over to the parts departement to see if they had the filter so I could take a picture. Not in stock.

The 2004 986 special edition has the same part number for the 997 filter. Strange. Because pet does not show a change in the part number for the special edition air box. Might be an error.

This is the only info I have for the 987 filter. Way different than a 986.

the 550 SE filter is definetely different from the '04 986S filter

i tried to put my BMC (purchased from MMD back in the day) from my '02S in my SE and it wasn't even close

i can't remember what size or shape it was, i opened up the engine last fall :(l

K & N website does not list any filters available for 987 yet

i was told the SE filter is from the 987, but your info indeicates it is from the 997- mahalo (thanks) for the tip

Here is the 2004 986 special edition part number for the air filter. As you can see the part number is the same for a 987. The M 091 after the part number means it is for the 986 special edition.

One of these days at our work on cars days a 2004 special edition will show up with as will a 987. Then I will know if 987 parts were used on the 986 special edition.

I spoke with EVO and they have dropped production on the 987 cold air intake which seems odd because if the Cayman has the same airbox they are just screwing themselves by not going ahead and doing it for the Boxster too. The 986 EVO cold air intake WILL NOT WORK for the 987.
