  1. post-2-1117898371_thumb.jpg

LOS ANGELES -- Two people were killed Thursday in a crash at California Speedway in Fontana.

A private car club was renting the speedway at the time of the crash.

A Porsche Carrera GT crashed into a retaining wall and came to rest on the track's infield. Authorities said two people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second person in the car was transported by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. That person later died.

It is my understanding that the driver was going approximately 150-165 MPH down the front straight of the track when a Ferrari pulled out from the pits and into his driving path. He swerved to avoid a collision with the Ferrari and lost control of the CGT and then slammed into a wall.

It has been confirmed that the driver of the CGT was RennTech.org contributing member ben, lj (Bejamin Miles Keaton). Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ben's family... we have lost a great Porsche enthusiast and member... this is a very sad day. RIP Ben

  2. how would a faulty gas cap contribute to P1123 and P1125? I actually don't know what proper operation of the gas cap provides - an air tight seal (I assume) or a certain amount of ventilation into/out of the gas tank?
    Per the OBD II manual:

In order to prevent fuel vapors from entering the atmosphere, an EVAP canister is connected to the tank ventilation line.

Fuel vapors are collected in the EVAP canister. As the EVAP canister can only accommodate a certain amount of fuel vapors, the fuel vapors must be taken in and combusted during driving.

For this to occur, the EVAP canister purge valve opens. Due to the vacuum predominating in the intake manifold, air is sucked up via the purge air line through the EVAP canister. The air sucked up in this way draws the collected fuel vapors with it.

American law requires the tank ventilation system to be checked for leaks.

  3. Any dealer should be able to pull up service and recall records by the car's VIN. There was a problem on earlier cars that might be still occurring. Difficulty filling the fuel tank can occur if the flexible fuel hoses in the fuel tank obstruct the inner flap of the fuel filler neck. This was caused by hoses that were not tie-wrapped down and they would work their way up and cause the pressure problem.

On a MY99 Boxster E6 should be a 7.5 A fuse for Terminal 30 Telephone/Handy Prep CU Navigation Orvr -- Options M614 / M618 M664. This fuse is the same for all model year Boxster's I looked at (through MY01).

  4. Has this always been a problem?

There is a TSB for a Fuel Tank Hose Modification (dated 8-12-99) where:

    1. Difficulty filling the fuel tank can occur if the flexible fuel hoses in the fuel tank obstruct the inner flap of the fuel filler neck.

    2. Incorrect fuel gauge readings can also be caused by the flexible fuel hoses in the fuel tank, should they interfere with the travel of the fuel sending unit arm and/or float.

Has this mod been done to your car?

  5. If the owners have the original documentation there should be an option list with many number codes. If they do not have it Porsche should be able tell you what options the car shipped with from the VIN - for a fee.

RoW stands for "rest of the world". Porsche broke their major build categories into two groups (in the late 70's or early 80's as I recall). There are cars built for the US and Canada that have certain emissions, lighting, ride height specifications, etc. And, then their are RoW cars which have a different set of specifications. Also, some models were not sold in the US/Canada.
