  1. Here is what Porsche says to do in the Service Manual:

    Inspecting airbag system

    1. Function test of airbag warning light. Switch on ignition to carry out this test. The airbag warning light must light up for approx. 3 seconds. If the warning light does not light up, check the bulb and power supply.

    2. Function test of the airbag system:

    - Connect and switch on the Porsche System Tester.

    - Switch ignition on.

    - Establish communication with the Airbag/POSIP control module.

    - Read out fault memory: No fault stored.

    - Remove E1 fuse.

    - Fault present after approx. 30 seconds>>Airbag warning light<<.

    - Insert E1 fuse again.

    - Clear fault memory.

    - Read out fault memory again after approx. 30 seconds: No fault stored.

    3. Check that a trim or stickers are not attached to the airbag units (driver's, passenger's, side airbag).

    4. Visual inspection of the components for damage and deformation.

    5. The system check must be acknowledged in the stamp spaces provided in the Guarantee and Maintenance booklet.

  2. You will need to remove the console to change the lid (unless you want to try and drill out the pop-rivets and then pop-rivet in the new one). There is a link at the beginning of the post below with the B&M short shifter instructions. These are are very good as they have pics and step by step to remove the console. You just won't be doing the shifter stuff.

The hinge replacement instruction (for broken hinges) are in TSB 6/99 6848 Oddments Tray Cover (dated 4-14-00). As a contributing member you have access to this TSB.

  3. They are pretty much just like 996. Most 996's use a 6 mm allen wrench but some use a triple square.

For the older GT3 and folks that ordered a rollbar kit Porsche has a kit that covers the mounting holes left behind. 000 044 801 63. It is a kit that normally comes with the Porsche Tequipment Sport Roll Bar to cover up holes after you've removed the seats to install the bar. It includes a couple of nicely made silver painted caps, two large vinyl covered plugs, and a mini version of the pin that secures the center of the seatbacks so that you can reinstall the cap over the center mounting point. Chances are it will work on a 997 too.

  4. I for one never got this intake to work without throwing a CEL and then running crappy. After 3 months of emails, phone calls, trial and error - still no luck. I ended up returning it for a refund (which I never got - which is another story). I settled for removing the internal baffles in the stock air cleaner box and using a race proven BMC air filter. That was my experience... :(

For a source try the link at the top of the page "Porsche Parts at Dealer Cost". Sunset Imports will sell those items at cost plus 15% shipping and handling.

  6. The car should not be disabled. If the battery dies and the car is locked you will need to unlock it manually with a key.

The radio code will need to be reset - it is a 4 digit code that is usually in your manuals, docs, etc. If you do not have the code a dealer can look it up for you with your VIN number and proof of ownership. Some dealers as well as Becker (radio manufacturer) now charge for this service so don't be surprised with they want you pay.

The DME (engine computer) will also be reset so the car may run a little rough when you first start it up. It will "re-learn" it's idle and driveability setpoints during the next few startup and driving sequences.
