  1. 986 505 311 06 G2X Lining (front bumper) (prime coated) for MY03- on Boxster S.

    985 505 551 01 G2X Cover (around opening) prime coated MY03- on Boxster S.

The inside retaining frame is: 986 505 555 02 01C Retaining Frame (satin black) MY03- on Boxster S.

The parts list does not show a grill of a Boxster S - it looks open. There are grills on the side opening but only the cover lip on the center opening.

  2. Hi

Okay, I'm having a tough time finding this part online.  The MAF serial numbers are:

    0 280 218 009

    996 606 124 00

This part is for the 2000 Boxster.

I can't find this part number online ANYWHERE.  I find a bunch of MAF's, but I'm not sure if this one is discontinued.  I've figured out (I think) that its the old version of the MAF.

Now the question is trying to find one!  The Parts Bin doesn't have any of these numbers on their website. I even called Bosch, but the reps haven't gotten back to me for a while.

Any help would be great.  If I can't find this part, how much should I expect to pay to get the DME reconfigured to work with the new sensor?  I'd like to get this problem solved as soon as possible.

    -Kevin

986 606 125 00 replaced that sensor in April 2000 then it uas updated again to 986 606 125 01. I don't know the Bosch number but someone should be able to cross reference it.
  3. As scouser points out, a simple "timed" relay does not suffice. The controls are a little more complicated. Essentially, it works analogous to the window controls (stop/start/auto/manual), with speed, latch and other controls added.

SmartTOP (SmartTop Webpage) has a nifty relay replacement solution that just plugs in and has everything integrated. They are the most expensive solution at 228 Euro (185 Euro in group buys).

Bahntech is the cheapest solution ($145) and does it with a custom printed circuit board that "hangs" between the dash buttons and the actual inputs to the relays. For it to work as desired you need to plug in the speed sensor wire and perform the two relay hacks (disable handbrake and speed signal).

I have the Bahntech in the 986 and am quite satisfied with it. Roll-your-own is doable, but probably not worth the roughly extra $100 you might be able to save. If you consider going the smartTop "clean" approach, be aware that just the relay replacement switch is $70 for starters  :(

I don't think the Bahntech unit is "timed", but rather it uses the signal from the metal hood cover when it closes (same signal in "top up" and "top down" position) to signal the end of the cycle. This would allow for simplier electronics (not car dependent). But I may be wrong on this.

Now, if Porsche is using the SmartTOP in the 997s, the price might drop somewhat. Anybody knows about this?

I believe that SmartTop (as well as the Bahntech solution) are only for Boxsters. The 996 top control is much more complicated - it does not use a relay but a separate control box.
  4. Hi all

I had a good long look to try and identify where my oil leak is coming from and one guess is that its coming from the oil sensor switch as on the cable there is quite much oil. This would suggest that the leak comes when the engine is running and then gets sprayed all over the place making it difficult to identify where the leak comes from. Is it common for oil to leak from the sensor ?

I don't think you could call it common but I know of at least two other cases of faulty (leaking) oil senders.
  5. Loren,

Quick question...is the part number the same for the upper shelf & the lower shelf?  If not, do you know the number for the lower?

I'm looking to replace the lower shelf on my '00 C2 Coupe.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, the lower shelf has a different curve in the faceplate since it sits lower in the console curve.

    Lower Shelf - 996 552 243 01 01C satin black

    or

996 552 982 01 xxx Shelf (replace xxx with appropriate leather color code)

    or wood or carbon fiber

  6. Those specs are for 996 brakes - Here is the same info on the GT3 brakes since they are about the same as TT/GT2:

Brake disc thickness, new -- front 34 mm, rear 28 mm

Minimum brake disc thickness after machining* -- front 32.6 mm, rear 26.6 mm (* The brake disc must only be reworked symmetrically, i.e. from both sides evenly.)

Brake disc wear limit -- front 32.0 mm, rear 26.0 mm

Peak-to-valley surface roughness of the brake disc after machining, max. -- 0.006 mm

Thickness tolerance of the brake discs, max. -- 0.02 mm

Lateral runout of the brake disc, max. -- 0.03 mm

Lateral runout of the wheel hub, max. -- 0.03 mm

Lateral runout of the brake disc when installed, max. -- 0.06 mm

  7. For my 2 cents...

I'm not sure of the quality being a problem on the PSE. What I have seen is two or three PSE's delivered in a box that looked like it was run over by a truck. I don't think the shipping packaging done by Porsche is very good. If you compare it to say the Litronics that come double boxed and foam lined. Considering the cost they (or their vendor) really should package them better for shipping.

    End of :soapbox:
