Interesting. It has scavenging pumps, but it is not a dry sump engine. I have some learnin' to do! I will do an "engine out" on my car in a few months so I will have the opportunity to "lay eyes" on all this stuff. I will replace all the chain guide pads while I have the engine out.

Does the base 3.4 have a scavenge pump? Isn't that on the X51 cars?

A couple of the posters thought the noise may be coming from the exhaust. The catalytic converters are located behind the bumpers. They do disintegrate internally when they get old, but the noise sounds too loud to be to be the exhaust. But I would definitely take a closer listen to rule out the exhaust before I start opening up the engine. Was the exhaust recently removed? Could a bracket be lose hitting one of the pipes?

That is where the timing chains are located for that bank. Probably worth taking the cover off to look if you are unable to find the source external to the engine.

One of the five timing chains may have extra slack due to the guide pads being worn out and coming into contact with something internal? You don't have the noise at idle and it get louder at higher RPMs, making me think centrifugal forces are causing two components to come in contact. Are there any aluminum particles in the oil filter? How many miles on the engine? It sounds louder than I would expect for a chain hitting the case or a cover and I would also expect the frequency to be higher (more taps per second). Is the noise louder on the back of the engine? Broken finger on the pressure plate possibly? I would raise the car up and listen from underneath. I would also remove the oil filter, cut it open and look for particles. Worst case is that something inside the engine is making this noise and you will probably have particles in the oil filter and you are looking at a complete teardown to clean it out and rebuild. By the way, the guide pads can be replaced with the engine in the car, but from what I have read, it is difficult.

Not sure how window position would affect the car "thinking" the door has been opened. It does lower the window slightly when the door is opened, and then raise it when the door is closed, but I did not see any type of position sensor for the window. I am going to start by bypassing the micro switch on the door handle so the door appears closed all the time. I think it is the driver's door giving me the problem. -

I have the same issue with my 1999 C2. I also suspect the micro switch, but I am not sure if the switch on the door handle is the one that sends the signal when door has been opened. I just recently purchased the car and I noticed it will sometimes double beep, like the door has been opened, in the middle of the night with the car cover on. After about a week of not driving the car, the battery was nearly dead this morning. -
There is an "oil in the coolant" 1999 3.4 on eBay that I was looking at. They are asking $2250 or best offer, with shipping included. I was thinking of buying it as a spare engine for my 1999 996. It is one I would rebuild at my leisure. I have some experience building engines and I think I can handle everything except the machining. I live less than an hour and a half from FlatSix Innovations in Cleveland Georgia, if I hit a wall.
