  1. When the switch fails, a common symptom is that the radio doesnt automatically switch off, you may also notice the lights do things like appear not to be on but are in park mode (not bright) and the spring back doesnt work or it feels reversed, that is when swicthing off it wants to "spring off" the OFF position . You may also have remore locking problems depdning on the security system fitted to the car, mine has an aftermarket system and I couldnt lock the car. Point to note is if this happens the car is "powered up" and if you leave it for a few days you could end up with a dead flat battery.
  2. in a few posts, a number have asked what are earthing points, the photos shows in the centre 2 earthing points on the frame eg the nut screwing down the brown earth wire
  3. Note RHD the screws are opposite to LHD (North American models) RHD is more difficult as the screws are accesed from on top hence you may need to use this approach Photo of the screw that needs to be loosened (theres 2 of them) The number 3 bit gives an idea of the size bit or driver you need Note the red sealer in the slot of the screw, this needs to scrapped of so you can loosen the screw, it can be difficult to scrap it out of the slot of the head of the screw so a screw driver will fit and also to get it out of the thread, as mentioned in this thread , a liitle solvent on a a cotton bud may help ignition switch viewed through vent, the switch is in front of the pink connector its a 2 minute job to take this out, it allows a good view of the ignition switch screws when scrapping the red sealer off, this is if you choose the method of removing the side vent, its more involved and requires the removal of more ducting but you may need to use this appproach if you cant loosen the screws, Take it gentle with the side vent as there are a couple of plastic levers that pop off easily and stop the vents from moving contact me if you need further info bruce
  4. LOL you've been stalking me when I ve been ridng my road bike, thats exactly my toolkit, besides a spare tube, any other problem , cab it home. Bruce
  5. Bought a new switch $45 from Porsche dealer, initially they told me they dont have them but when I followed up with a "little more knowldge" from this site, they told me I need not go to the audi dealer, they had an Audi part in stock. Very, very envious of those that took 15 minutes, I can see how it could be especially if it has been replaced and not sealed or loctite'd, mine wouldnt budge, had to remove the side vents and the speaker, the speaker hole gives great vision from above. I cant see that RHD would make much difference but it took me 2-3 hours I ended up get some carby cleaner and a cotton bud which loosened up the red sealer, like everyone else, improvised on the tool. Thanks to all who contributed their experience over the last few years to this subject I have a photo of the screw, I'll post so you can see what your trying to loosen off. Good news is the car is going and doing all the right things. Interested to know if anyone who replaced theres, loctite'd the screws, with the history of these switches, I didnt bother as the screws didnt exactly "spin in: there was reasonable resistance probably from residual sealer. Bruce
  6. Richard many thanks, I think I probably only did a search on the boxster forum not the whole site inc 996, which raises the question is the 996 interior generaly the same as the 986 behind the facade? Bruce
  7. Symptoms - like others, lights dont switch on correctly, radio is still on when key is fully turned off, key doesnt spring back from start position (the return spring seems to be reversed as if its jumped a pawl) This to me seems like the typical ignition switch problem. My questions are 1. Is the switch at he back of the lock the problem or is it the lock (porsche told me that to change the switch you need a new lock as they dont support the orignal swich, its superceded) 2. I am told that the switch is the same as used by audi part #M5050-63421, can anyone confirm that? 3. does anyone have a guide to replacing the switch and or lock, are there any tricks? Under what circumstances does the computer need reprogramming, if at all. Bruce
  8. Tool Pants Yes Definitely better and very worthwhile, not perfect starting yet, but significant improvement on idling. Starts and settles into an idle quicker if I give a little throttle when I hit the ignition. Once the car has been running for more than 10-15 secs its terrific, smooth idle and holds idle revs very steady, bizaarly gear changes seem smoother (its a Tiptronic). Not sure if I should clean the throttle body. I havent got any diagnostic sw so I cant reset or diagnose . I runs slightly rough first start of the day for 10-15 secs. Its done 99,000 kms (60,000 miles), I dont when the plugs were last done, the service centre reckons they didnt need doing which irked me some beacuse I wanted it done. I reckong the AOS needs doing and not sure if the O2 sensors are worth doing. Bruce
  9. Loren Good thoughts hadnt thought about software Do you know of any logic to the use of tork screws and security screws, eg the MAF uses security screws and the ICV uses tork screws? Bruce
  10. In a previous post, I was looking for ideas on a basic essential toolkit for working on boxsters, didnt get any ideas and was wondering if you need "stimulus". I was thinking it probably begins with the right garage environment and an apprentice, I have attached a photo of my environment, notethe special workbench and test equipment, its a 3 group model in case you urgently need more than one on those tricky jobs. Apologies to our english friends it not made of china :-) Seriously if anyone has a list of tools , would love to know. Bruce
  11. Stefan heres the broken one, you can imagine the bit missing by looking at the icv in the instructions part number thats on order (from the invoice) 99611031050
  12. Stefan thank you I suspect your right, I used the degreaser on the outside of the body and peripherals but the carby cleaner probably would have done. I was being a little frugal but didnt need to be as I only used about a quarter of a can. The degreaser was a quarter of the price. If it wasnt clear the mini shifter had a tork screw bit in the jawsforming a right angle screw driver, next time I would put some blue tack on the jaws to stop it slipping out, I lost 2 bits. the gasket broke but its still around, it was very brittle, I'll take a photo, note sure of the part number but as I ordered one the invoice may have a part number on it. I used black gasket silicone in place of the original. Can you belive the OPC doesnt stock them, they ordered it from germany. Bruce
  13. Hi As a suggestion from this site I decided it was worth cleaning the ICV and took the suggestion to buy a gasket before starting the job.Amazingly the OPC didnt have them especially as its also the country HQ, one really wonders when they ever clean these or do they just use gasket goo like I had too. I have documented the process for those new to DIY. Bruce
  14. OK I got impatient started a job and of course needed a special tool, so heres the first on the list Porsche special tool P986hoho1 In case its not obvious the mini shifter wrench has a tork screwbit in the jaws making a right angle screw driver to fit in the tight space, taking out the 2nd screw on the ICV (you could add some blue tack in the jaws of the shifter, or spanner, so the bit doesnt drop out and get lost down below) see seperate post with instruction on cleaning ICV
  15. Its reasonably common for boxsters to hae a problem like this, if you do a search you will note this, just one small drop produces a significant puff. I suspect if you watch your oil level over a few months you wont notice any change in level , meaning its not burning oil whilst running. Others have reported this is a symptom pf an Oil/Air seperator problem which is a relatively cheap fix but suspect you dont need to panic if there no other problems.
  16. Great improvement although it was 100f here today and although the car had sat for 24 hours and was technically cold the air was not but it started and run very nice and has run all day at lights etc beautifully. It will be ineteresting tommorow morning when hopefully its colder again. Have documented in PDF with photos any suggestions where I can upload (file is a few meg) Once again Bruce
  17. done as suggested, what a great maintenance idea, have some pics will post, thanks all especially Chris and Glyn Bruce
  18. Looking for a suggestion on an essential but minimum toolkit, went to clean the ICV and murhys law dont have the right tool to get it out, hence the question, what basic kit will do most jobs?
  19. Hi Sugestion - as it is a tiptronic - as a saftey measure it will only start in Park or Neutral, try moving the gear shift in or out of gear and see if this changes the situation. I dont know this from experince just applying logic and supporting previous comets on the Tiptonic switch which is dependent on gear shift position. RE the brake switch - do the brake lights work? I dont know the specifics of the boxster but can hep a litle with education. Earthing points - cars electrical systems are DC (direct current) which means they have a +ve and -ve voltage which you see as the poistive and negative on the battery, most cars inc boxster use the negative as an earth, that menas the negative terminal has a connection to the chassis or body of the car, this saves running 2 wires to points in the car that need electricty, hence you will see around the car wires quite often black with a brass round connector that has a screw through it and is screwed into a metal point of the car these are the earthing points, does that make sense. Generally these earth points are considered to be 0 volts, the positive is considerd as 12 volts.
  20. OK I'll look into that one, whats there to clean? Bruce Clean or replace the idle spped control valve Glyn
  21. Yep, did that one (and had to drive the porsche centre and get the code, damm sticky notes rub off and blow away) thanks Bruce
  22. Hi all Repalced the MAF and it got rid of numerous problems as per previous posts, now the only issue is it needs some throttle to start and idle. It takes about a minute to idle ok and drives great, although I would say the idle is a little rough but OK Any ideas Bruce
  23. Lasted 2 weeks and I had enough, my wife can here me on the phone now, left it of as I was waiting for a new MAF. Then again if you want real load leave leave the engine cover off, I reckon you'll last a block the upside you will drive it like a baby :-), and yes theres a million reasons why its not a good idea. Simply open the top to service position Remove the parcel shelf Remove sound deadening from the engine cover End result If you like 911 sound authenticity and have a desire to go def then i'd highly recommend it :)
  24. CJ Another thank you for a great write up, I suspect that I may end up doing this job and know it will be invaluable. Its generousity of time and sharing like this that makes the world go round. Bruce
