  2. Kare, According to the Bentley Service Manual, the VarioCam system was changed beginning with the 2003 model year. It doesn't refer to the new VarioCam as "Plus" just redesigned. The DME is Bosch ME 7.8 starting with the 2003 model year. This true for both base and S models. Bill
  3. Once the instrument cluster is removed, you will see there is plenty of room - around the back of the instrument cluster - to run your micophone wire to the grill. Just leave a little slack in the wire to enable you to easily remove the grill, if needed in the future. Removing the hazard warning light can be a little fiddly: "Press hazard-warning button so it projects out. The button can be pulled off by hand. If needed, a small common screwdriver can be used to help remove the button. With the button removed, access to the switch is available. On either side of the switch there are two locking tabs. With thumb and forefinger squeeze the tabs and simultaneously pull the switch out using the long nosed pliers. Behind the switch is one of the two cluster mounting screws." By the way, nice car. It is the mirror image of mine, i.e., LHD. Bill

  5. The plastic "covers" pull straight out. I have had to use a common screwdriver to carefully get them started then used my fingers to complete the job. They a little "fiddly" to get them square when you push them back on. Bill

  7. Mark, I have an MY02 Targa with about 54,000 miles. I use it as a boulevard and cross country cruiser....no DE's, AX's or daily driving. I'm the second owner, having purchased the car about two and a half years ago from the original dealer/service provider as a CPO car. I mention the history of the car because I have all of the service records. With the exception of a RMS issue, a heated seat problem and the replacement of a six year old battery, the car has been trouble free. The car hasn't had any maintenance, TSB or otherwise, done to the top. With respect to the Targa top, mine doesn't rattle or leak. I will say that it is very uncomfortable cruising with top open. Even with the flip up spoiler extended, the noise and buffeting are very tiring. The rear view through the back window is somewhat compromised with the top open. And, if you forget and open the top with the sunscreen closed, the rear view is almost totally blocked. (The sunscreen can be extended or retracted regardless of the top position.) If you purchase an MY02/MY03 Targa and don't get an Owner's Manual, download the MY03 Carrera Owner's Manual available here at RennTech. There is some important information that covers closing the top manually (pg 164/165) and closing the rear lid (pg 163). My subjective observations driving a stock Targa compared to my wife's stock MY03 2.7 Boxster - given my lack of test driving education and experience - are: the Targa obviously out performs the Boxster with respect to acceleration; the Targa feels like it is the heavier car that it is; cornering performance hasn't been deeply explored, though I suppose the Boxster would win out, given the stock suspension/alignment setup of both cars and the mid-engine vs. rear-engine design. (Flame suit on.) Both cars have PSM. Targas have been panned because of the extra 30-35 pounds of the Targa top raises the c.g. of the car. That, again, is out of my test driving experience level. One final thought.....the 997 Targas are again based on Cabriolet bodies as were the 993 Targas previously mentioned. My thought is that the Cabriolets have additional stiffening which, when added to the installation of the Targa top, makes the 997 Targas stronger (more rattle free) than the 996 Targas. Cheers, Bill
  8. shihman, How long is the dipstick on your car? An MY03 Boxster dipstick is about 35.5 inches long, from the tip to the shoulder of the pull ring. Part number 996.107.014.02. An MY02 Carrera dipstick is about 23 inches long, from the tip to the shoulder of the pull ring. Part number 996.107.014.54 / 55, depending on engine serial number. Bill
  9. eDoug, Here's a link to the (1996) EPA fact sheet concerning "Emissions Warranties For 1995 and Newer Cars & Trucks": http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt Major emissions control components are warrantied for 8 years or 80,000 miles. From the EPA fact sheet: "What Are Specified Major Emission Control Components? There are three specified major emission control components, covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995 and newer vehicles: * Catalytic converters. * The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU). * The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD)." Take a copy of the fact sheet with you when you visit the dealer. Hope this helps, Bill
  10. Kristian, Pages 143 to 149 in the MY03 Carrera Owner's Manual (found on this site) are dedicated to the manual operation of the convertable top. The steps outlined are not for your model year but might be of some help. If you have an MY99 Owner's Manual with your car, you might check it for assistance. Bill

This is from an MY03 Carrera Owner's Manual (found on this site for downloading): "Anti-crushing protection "If a side window is blocked during closing, it will stop and open again by about an inch. "A Warning! "Risk of severe personal injuries. If the rocker switch is pressed again within 10 seconds of the window being blocked, the window will close with its full closing force. Anti-crushing protection is disabled. "Once the anti-crushing protection acts to stop the window and opens it slightly, do not press the rocker switch again within 10 seconds without checking to make sure that nothing is blocking the path of the window. The window will close with full closing force. "One-touch operation is disabled for 10 seconds after blockage of a side window." Bill
  12. Pieter, The DME's all have 996 numbers and are all "uncoded" when they are manufactured. The .01, .02, etc., at the end of the part number refers to the current manufacturing or modification status. I think that you will have no problems re-coding your 986 DME to that of a 996 DME. I would try to stay with he 996.618.601.xx series DME's because they are common to non e-gas engines.   13. The shift knob pulls off - with some effort needed. Lower the top so you can kneel over the shift know and pull directly up. Try not to have your face directly over the shift knob....you don't want to hit your self in the face when the shift knob does come (suddenly) off. Bill
  14. Anthony, I have an MY02 C2 that has the same symptoms....generally with the oil pressure in the 3 to 4.5 bar range. The oil pressure transmittters have been known to fail. And, because the connectors (oil pressure gauge / oil pressure idiot light) on the oil pressure transmitter are not protected from the engine compartment elements, a poor connection could be the cause of the fluctuating oil pressure indication. Because my oil pressure only fluctuates when the oil pressure is running in a certain range, I'm thinking my problem is in the oil pressure transmitter itself. MSRP at a dealer is about $50-55 and is supposed to be owner replaceable....if you have long skinny arms. Bill

  16. For anyone who needs to replace a plastic connector, have your Porsche technician (not parts guy) check his “Porsche Electrical Connector Repair Kit” for the replacement connectors. The entire repair kit (for sports cars) is known as CARTOOL – Nr 96 0 000 or PNA 721 043 600. It is full of connectors the parts guy would like to sell you the entire wiring harness for. There is a sparate repair kit - different CARTOOL/PNA number - for Cayennes as well. Bill
  17. JeTexas, Ref. my Dec 5 post, your problem sounds even more like the problem I had with my MY77 280Z. I thought there was a "flat spot" in the engine's acceleration at about 3000 RPM. So I took the car to Bob Sharp's Datsun dealership in Connecticut. Due to his success in racing, I figured his technicians could "slightly tune" my engine to perfection. A couple of teenagers with a screw driver - and no instrumentation - adjusted a couple potentiometers (as I watched in disbelief) and..................... I lived with the problem for a while. Later on, I bought a Bentley-type service manual and a multimeter and reset the fuel injection system back to normal operation. I also replaced the front brake pads which had worn more quickly than normal. I don't know much about the Porsche fuel injection system's capability to be tuned without changing the computer programing. But, maybe you could ask the fellow who worked on your car what he did so you can brief a proper Porsche technician on what to look for. That might keep the trouble shooting (and possible repair) costs down. Bill
  18. Sundance, From the Carrera Owner's Manual: "With a warmed up engine and at a speed of 5,000 rpm, the oil pressure should be approx. 3.5 bar." No other guidance given for expected oil pressure. Bill
  19. Wross996TT, What the heck do you mean "the cover"?.....I think refers to the "convertable top compartment lid", item "D" in the right hand figure on page 144 in the MY03 Carrera Owner's Manual. If the Carrera Cabriolet is like the Boxster, that "cover" won't move if the parking brake isn't applied. Beyond that knowledge, I depend on Maurice for convertable top information. Bill
  20. Sievlde, You can get a rough estimate of the car's mileage by using a PIWIS to access the DME. You can read out the operating hours and the average speed and, by multiplying these two figures together, get an estimate of the total miles. However, this approach is only valid if the DME is the original. And, as fast as these cars can go, the average speed will probabily only be about 30-33 MPH (48-53KPH). It might also be interesting to know why the odometer was "re-set". Bill

  24. FWIW.... From page 172 in MY03 Boxster Owner's Manual: Refuelling 1. Important: Stop the engine and switch off the ignition. Later on the same page: Check engine warning light If the warning light in the instrument panel comes on and remains on while driving, it suggests: - an improperly fastened gas cap or - refuelling with engine running. Besides eliminating yet another reason for the CEL to illuminate, refuelling with the engine turned off probably complies with the enviornmental laws of many countries, states or municipalities in which Porsche does business. And, as mentioned above, there is always the safety - not to mention liability - consideration when handling volitile gasoline. Bill
  25. Je, Many years ago, I had a '77 280Z that had a similar problem....the engine RPM would hang at 2000RPM until I had slowed to under 10MPH and then drop to the usual idle RPM. If I was to slow, while in gear, to less than 2000RPM and then de-clutch, the engine RPM would increase back to 2000 until I slowed to less than 10MPH. As I recall, there was a speed signal sent to the fuel injection computer while decellerating and that signal was incorrect. Perhaps one of the electrical/electronic whizes can find a similar electrical situation with the 996/986 fuel injection system. Bill
