  1. Happened to my 2005 CS2 just over 3 years ago. Just after I bought it I detailed the entire car. Next thing I knew I got the same message you got. Dealer just replaced an ECU right behind the front bumper cover. No relays were burned. Simple job and it was covered under my warranty. I suspect they'll fix it even if it's out of warranty since it is a 'known' problem on the early build 997's.
  2. Sound like they're just sending you DVD's from their 'scrap pile'. The Cayenne, Boxster and 911 all use the same type but not the same versions due to PCM configurations and levels. Any Porsche parts guy should be able to look up your VIN and/or PCM level and tell you exactly which NAV DVD's will play.
  3. I think my first question would be where did you get the NAV DVD that you currently have. If the dealer provided it or if you bought the car from a dealer in that condition they have to make it right. If on the other hand you simply bought that NAV DVD w/o checking it's compatibility w/ your PCM level then you'll need to bite the bullet. I think the latest NAV DVD for the 997.1 is the Navigation Update Kit - P/N 997-044-901-51. I believe it's at a 2008 level regarding POI's and maps. My suggestion is to have a 'knowledgeable' Porsche service mgr tell you what version of NAV DVD you should use. If you have a buddy or fellow PCA club member that has a simliar MY 997.1 w/ PCM/NAV you just might try their DVD to see if it plugs 'n plays. That would give you a clue.
  4. The PCM has to be 'on' for any of the functions to work (ie. radio, NAV, etc). I suspect you have to use the 'SET' function to pre-set the radio volume to the desire level or for that matter any of the functions requiring audio (ie. NAV). When all else fails read the owner's manual.
  5. If you can tolerate the oil slick in your garage and replenish the leakage from time-to-time it should have no long term consequences. I suspect Porsche has some pretty well documented procedures for dealers by now dealing w/ RMS replacements. Good Luck!
  6. It's not RMS from the location of the oil residue. RMS leakage typically occurs between the transmission housing and the motor block (front of motor). Loren suggestion of cleaning that area and then inspecting it after you run for a while is right on.
  7. Take a look at this neat mod for the turning on/off the PSE. 150 Euros is close to $225USD. I wish they had this item a few years back when I did the external switch wiring on my PSE. http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p97084.htm : P97 PSE Manual Control The PSE on the P97-1 and P97-2 needs to be activated every time you start the car by pushing the "Sport" and/or "PSE" button. And even if you have decided to set the PSE in the loud setting, the DME will always switch the PSE to silent between 45 and 75km/h. On most cars, it's also not possible to have the PSE on when the Sport setting is switched off. We now offer a plug and play solution that allows you to control the PSE manually, with memory function and all this via remote control. The 2 channel remote has a "loud" and "silent" button so you can be 100% sure of the setting, even before you start the engine. If you switch off the ignition, the last setting will be stored so next time you start the car, the PSE will still be in the same position so it's not necessary to push any of the buttons first, in order to get the PSE in the setting that you prefer.   8. Unfortunately there is no kit for a 997. I used the same kit you mentioned in my old 986 Boxster S. Remember this is the 997 forum so why post a 996 item? No harm no foul.
  9. I've noticed (smelled I should say) the exact same odor from the rear of my car (funny happens to be a 2005 997S as well) as well. I've always attributed it to 'burnt tire odor' coming from my Michelin PS2's. Of course its much more pronounced when I pull the car into my little garage. If you sniff your rear tire well(s) after a spirited or high speed drive the odor is much stronger. Don't let anyone see you doing this however or they'll think your some sort of pervert. I've always thought it was tire smell so that's my story and I'm sticking to (unless someone has a better one). :D :D :D
  10. Your PCM needs to upgraded and possibly your Bose Amp (if you have one) in order for a late version of the NAV DVD to function. Do a search on this forum regarding this topic and you'll get a better understanding of the steps involved.
  11. Well here's one idea. If you have an MY05 997 then I suspect your NAV DVD is from 2004 unless it's been updated. So . . If you're looking for 'new' roads and such they won't be on DVD.
  12. Wow . . . It does seem odd that you've had the same sort of problem on (3) PCM units. I would tend to look for the real source of the problem. Hard to believe that (3) PCMs fail in the 'same' manner. Was the problem the same on all (3)??????? Someone already mentioned the fact that early build 2005 997's have some 'uniqueness' regarding the PCM and it's software and the Bose Amp. It doesn't sound (no pun intended) that this issue is your problem. You might in fact put in a later build PCM that isn't compatible with the rest of your system. Just a thought! If they were dealer installed and even if your car may be out of warranty there still might be some residual warranty on the actual PCM unit. If you bought them off eBay or some other 'questionable' source you might not be able to get the dealer to 'buy-in' on the problem. Good luck and keep us all informed as to your ultimate fix.
  13. You're precisely correct. The update kit (99704490151) has the 05/2007 mapping dvd.
  14. If I'm not mistaken the wheel w/ the triangular air bag is the wheel normally on the non 'S' 997 cars. That wheel would usually come with the radio/phone/pcm controls on it when ordered on an "S' car. I believe the 'standard' 997S comes w/ the 'Sport Wheel' (round air bag, fatter & w/ ergonomic grips). I'm puzzled why someone would 'special order' the non 'S' wheel. I've never seen that wheel on an 'S' car unless it had the controls. I guess they didn't like the way the 'Sport Wheel' looked.
  15. It's more likely an RMS leak. RMS and IMS I believe are exclusive of each other. An RMS leak doesn't mean you have a potential IMS failure. Crawl under or raise the car and have a look. Typical RMS leaks are where the motor meets the transmission. Accumulated oil from an RMS leak will appear in that general area. RMS leaks are usually none catastrophic in nature; just a nuisance.
  16. This doesn't sound (no pun intended) to be the Bose Amp problem although it just might be. If one attempts to update the PCM software on a early issue Bose Amp equipped 997 it might cause the amp to go into a 'brick state'. The result would be no audio at all. The PCM/NAV, at least in my case, continued to work properly sans audio. I ultimately had the Bose Amp replaced (w/ a newer revision level). Once that was done the PCM software update completed normally and the new NAV DVD functioned just fine. Good luck!
  17. Sorry to hear about your dilemma. :( It's not all uncommon for Porsche to offer 'financial assistance' if one of their cars is just out of the warranty period or if the problem is a well-known deficiency. Keep us posted on the progress. Good Luck!
  18. As long as you own the car! Joking aside I don't know of anyone 'wearing out' a set of PCCB's in normal street driving. Sure if you track frequently and/or participate in a lot of aggressive driving (and braking) then PCCB's might not be the brake system for your soley due to the cost to repad and replace rotors. Iron rotors and regular pads are a lot less expensive. I've got about 18K miles on my PCCBs and they look like new. I've heard of other guys w/ over 40K miles and no wear to speak of. If you chip or crack a rotor it will be expensive to replace. Inspect the rotors for chips, cracks, etc. if you're buying a PCCB equipped car. Good luck!

  21. Opinions are one thing and facts are another. I don't have the stats on problems w/ MY2005 versus other years but I suspect it's pretty much the norm (my opinion). RMS problems have been a Porsche design shortfall issue for quite sometime. New seals I'm told tend to correct the problem. I've read the new 997.2 engine design has completely resolved this problem. Time will tell. IMS failures, once again according to what I've read, are an early MY2005 problem but I don't know the percentage of IMS failures based on the build number. Forum threads typically accentuate the negatives; no one ever creates a thread stating I've got 40K+ miles and no IMS failure. All I can really do is relate my experience w/ my MY2005 Launch Car and that has been good.
  22. I've had my 'Launch Car' for close to 2.5 years. I know there is some anxiety regarding 2005 cars (ie. IMS & RMS issues) but to be honest I couldn't be happier w/ my car. I've been out of warranty since last August. I was concerned initially but these cars are pretty much rock solid. Of course s**t can happen but it's the exception rather than the rule. Are you buying from a Porsche dealer? If so, you should press for CPO coverage. Inspect the rotors for damage (chips, cracks, etc) since they are expensive to replace. I've got close to 18K miles on mine as well; it's pretty much a pleasure car so it doesn't see a lot of road time. I'm pretty close to you (Hermosa Beach).
