  1. Yeehaw The front wings or fenders as they call them in the US are different on the 997 and 987 so you would need to replace the front fenders, the front bumper and also the front lights. Probaly best to try and find a wrecked 997 and get the lights from the bumper and then order a kit of front wings from one of the carbon shops advertisijng on e bay.
  2. Alan, Take a look at german e bay and search unger porsche auspuh. There is a company offering to modify your exhaust with additinal bypass pipes to give a more sporty sound. If you look at the pics it may give some ideas as to a cheaper and less complicated mod to removing the cats.
  3. The lights and front wings on the boxster 987 are particular to the cayman and boxster 987. Therefor it follows that the cayman bumper is possibly a direct fit , but would require some rewiring for the front fogs etc. The front wings from a 997 should fit a 987 , therefore conceptually you could build a 997 carrera or GT3 front end onto a boxster 987. IMHO this would look perfect as I'm not convinced about the Boxster lights, and prefer the 997 light .
  4. Not sure why you would want to cut up a 70,000 $ car's exhaust , would it not be simpler to by a techart item or fit the sport exhaust from a cayman that has baffle bypass pipes. Looking on E bay I see there are companies in Germany offering a bypass option on the standard exhaust to give a more sporty sound. I doubt removing the second set of cats will give a significant improvement in performance as the specialist tuners such as Techart/ speedart / 9FF/ RUF etc only seem to suggest 10 hp with a full system including high flow primary cats and performance headers. Wait a few months are there will be a performance exhaust option for the 987 with switchable baffle as used in the 997. Modifications are fine ..but this seems a bit pointless IMHO.
  5. And the tech bulletin clearly stastes there is no increase in performance either. Sounds like a lot of effort and cash for little gain....
  6. I think you would fail your emissions tests... Perhaps better to buy high flow primary cats and a sports flow exhaust still with cats installed..

Intersting comparison and some nice calculations but the 2.7 has a completely different torque curve to the 3.2, so even if you drove both cars with the same 6 speed box , I'd expect to notice a difference. The Cayman and 3.2 are similar in torque curves , but again not identical , so depending on which gear you are in depends on what difference you will notice. To be honest , rather than spending lots of cash on a new model, if your existing car has done its depreciation , tuning may be a beeter bet. Techart offer a 45 hp increase for the 987 S for about 20K $. This equates to approximately 325 Bhp , not far short of a carrera and a car with substantially less weight.

  9. Apparently it costs about 950 pounds for the parts. 2100 pounds all in fitted. Ideally suited to cars with the sport chrono pack plus which have the sport button on the dash to activate the exhaust baffles. Otherwise the system is automatic and engages with higher rpm.
  10. Level A software units can be updated from version 1 or 2 software to version 3 by inserting the update CD in the PCM CD drive and following the on screen instructions. When you have level 3 software loaded you can run the most up to date map disks without issue. If you have level B software there are upgrades also available , but these don't need updating to run the map disks as they should already be level 3. Just be aware that the DVD navi unit and the PCM must be of the same generation , the hardware cannot be mix and matched. Subscribe to this forum and you will have access to the TSB's . There you will find all the info you need on : install time , compatability of hardware, software revisions and updates of software. Well worth the few dollars. :cheers:
  11. Don't forget that the PCM 2.1 consists of two parts..the head unit and the external DVD navigation drive. Not sure that its as simple as plugging it in and "off you go" , as the CAN BUS will need to be told it's there and you will need to know which wires to connect . The GPS reciever sits under the windscreen under the bonnet (front trunk). Bear in mind also , that the pcm is designed to work with the diversity aerials fitted in the front windshield. It's possible you may be able to get the PCM radio to work with only one aerial, just dont expect the reception to be as good as OEM. To run the latest USA map disks you may also need to update the firmware/software in the head unit to version 3.
  12. 987 2.7 uses the 986 brake caliper pt no 986 351 421 03. The S version uses the 996 brake caliper part no 996 351 431 30 due to the disk being both wider and thicker than the standard 987. The S version of the 986 also uses the same 996 caliper and disk as the the newer 987 S. The front hubs between the 2.7 and S appear to be common on the 987 as there are no alternatives for model types. Therfore it suggests if you fit the correct caliper and disk combination you should achieve compatability.
  13. I can confirm they can be refitted. I used a small size allen key as they are more rigid than wire and a pair of long nose plyers to initially place the fangs either side of the vent fin. As you say in your post its a fiddly but simple matter of moving the centre paddle to the extremity and pulling the fang back into its position. I also noted that the left and right hand vents are easier to refit with the fins directed towards the side windows as there seems to be more room. You may also note the fang is offset , the offset should be towards the top facing upwards. I didn't fancy having the leather trimmed dash removed for a simple vent and then the grief of creaks and rattles forever more. It may note be a permanent fix (special glue is required for this type of plastic -superglue wont work as its an oil based plastic) but I'd prefer to fix as I go than have the dash apart.
  14. Whilst trying to get an update CD for my 987/997 PCM2.1 I accidentally purchased a CD update for the PCM2 dated 2003. This is a spare part you can buy from your dealer for a few dollars. The update CD's for the 987 that allow use of the current DVD are self loading from the CD drive. Obviously you cannot update a PCM2 to run the DVD map disks but the software may allow you to use the current PCM2 map disks if you are otherwise unable to.
  15. Thanks for the reply. I am re assured then about getting a Sachs unit or upgrade as being suitable quality for the car. Do you have any idea as to the "normal" life of a clutch, and would you advise I get the RMS changed or leave it if it isn't leaking? I will try and press both the supplying dealer and Sachs about part payment for replacing the unit mainly becuase 30k miles seems really far too early.
  16. Having covered just 30,000 miles the clutch on my 987s requires replacement. Having bought the car second hand its always hit and miss as to the condition of wearing parts, but I'm surprised its gone this soon (i've never tracked or raced the car). Does anyone out there know who makes the original clutches for the 987 with 6 speed gearboxes. Having looked at the parts catalogue from porsche it's a totally different beast to that fitted to the 986 S and the 2.7 987. Obviously i'd prefer to have an OEM clutch from porsche fitted , but I am also considering a sachs performance item , suggested to be similar to OEM to drive but harder wearing. Any information or advice greatly appreciated. By the way , the car is still under warranty but I beleive clutches are not covered.
  17. Just for info I have managed to upgrade my PCM2.1 originally manufactured 2004 and running software version 1 to the latest supportable version 3. This allows the later versions of map disk to be used in the unit (ie those from 04.2005 and later) which in the Uk means that TMC functions properly. The PCM hardware in early vehicles will not support software above version 3 I beleive as it is designed for the later versions of PCM that have the MP3 capability. To upgrade from version 1 ,2 to version 3 on early PCM 2.1's just requires a Cd rom inserted in the Cd drive of the unit. The update is self activating and no special OBD tools are required.
  18. The PASM will be tuned for the spring rate , so a shorter spring is likely to have a firmer ride due to the reduced travel. I'm sure the PASM would have a good try at adjusting , but ultimately I would suggest that that the spring and dampers should be matched. Techart and FVD in germany offer reduced ride height kits for PASM fitted cars that include new PASM dampers. Ideally I'd suggest initially checking at the part numbers for the turbo vs your model to determine if the PASM dampers are the same. Bear in mind also that the turbo may have a different sprung weight to your car , so the springs will be designed around this. To keep the handling the same or better , i would personally opt for a matched kit of dampers and springs or shorter springs from a well known tuner that are matched to your car and OEM set up. I looked at the porsche parts catalogue I have and the new turbo isn't listed. What I have found is that there are two part numbers listed fro the PASM dampers on the 997 non turbo models. This may relate to 2 and 4 wheel drive versions or possibly a revision in suspension mountings as the springs for certain models have a part number change based on year. What is apparent is that there are different spring rates (part numbers) depending on the model suggesting the springs are tuned to the size of anti roll bar and mass of the car , 2wd/ 4wd version. I still think a good tuning company will be a better route to an optimised ride height with original PASM dampers rather than raiding the parts bin of the turbo , and if TUV approved it should be similar quality.
  19. Just a suggestion.. The Cayenne PCM includes an AV interface button. This would allow a simpler connection to other AV devices such as a car computer MP3 or DVD etc. www.nav-tv in the USA offer interfaces for the cayenne pcm 2.1, or you could try AudiotechnicDietz.de who also offer similar. The standard PCM2.1 in the 987/997 doesn't have the A/V interface , this may be a lot more difficult to retro fit.
  20. With a LHD car you will notice more results in intake noise as the throttle intake is on the left side of the car. I'd expect a better throttle response at lower speeds as has been stated , but there is a risk that at higher speeds 70 mph + losing the restriction may cause the air drawn in to be too high for the fuelling map in the ECU. The electronics would then over fuel to within a specified tolerance (usually 10%) and after that alter the timing to prevent the engine overheating with a weak mixture. This could explain poor fuel consumption on cars with this mod. Unless you have an ECU remap and find that you are running a rich mixture , or need more air , I'd not bother with removing the baffle or change the filter. The K&N filter is a single ply oil filmed paper element which may allow more sound from the engine and will give better air flow. Be careful the oil on the filter doesnt carry over to the MAF , contaminating it and causing fuelling errors. For this reason I'd replace the baffle to prevent pressurising the filter and causing carry over.

  22. Whats the expected life of a 987 s clutch. Biting point seems quite high and there seems to be a clunk when on/off throttle at low speeds in a high gear. Currently at 40,000 kms.
  23. You cannot adjust the dip but you can blank off the dip by moving an adjuster lever on the rear of the headlamp inside the rear cover. This will give you a flat beam pattern that does not have the angled kick up to the left side (In UK) or right hand side (in Europe). The headlamps are different units for Uk or European spec with the kick up to the left or right accordingly. They both have a neutral beam (flat) when set in TC position.
