  1. I was returning from Mom's house last Sunday. The weather was unseasonably nice, so I unwrapped the 996 and took that for a late winter ride. Upon my return, there was a early 80's 911 with a man in his fifties and a woman of similar age. I caught up with him and gave a toot with the horn and a wave. He turned his head and gave a wave back, wasn't smiling though. When I drive the car, I have a perpetual grin. or perhaps I just think I do. Anyway, I have noticed the same response or lack there of from alot of other P-car owners, or maybe they are not... and just borrowed the car. I still acknowledge them, and will continue to do so. Good luck, do good work and do not shift under 4k. James Greer
  2. When I purchased my 996 C2, the previous owner installed a B&M ssk. The shifter is notchy when cold, 30 to 40 deg f (recent New England weather) but is fine when tranny warms up. I have driven several P cars with and without ssk's installed. Like stated above the only question is, which one to put in. The stock shifter is fairy lame. James Greer
  3. ME's, Let see, James Watt, steam engine; Leonardo DaVinci; The Wright brothers although not classically trained, GW Roebling, Brooklyn Bridge, And for god or bad, the guys that designed our P-cars are predominantly ME's With out the ME, life would be rather boring. ME's rule, at least better than the EE's. BSME 82
  4. When I bot my 01 c2, Porsche of Arlington VA gave me all the records over the phone. This included the 15k. 30k check ups etc and other work. I also got copies of the work done on another car from the dealer to prove the work had been done. James Greer
  5. The spots are residue in the water. Used distilled water for the final rinse. Particulate free. Much cheaper than a detailer. No filtration system will completely remove all suspended solids. Or get a white car. Jim Greer
  6. What are you going to do with the CD holder gizmo? I have a cd player and a cassette holder gizmo. J Greer
  7. When I bought my 01 c2 coupe, I called a dealer in the state that the car was initially registered. I gave him the VIN # and he was able to tell me what dealer sold the car. I called that dealer and they went over the service history over the phone. I looked at several cars before this one and had no problems getting the service histories. In all cases, the prior owners name was blacked out on the hard copies I did get. I am in MA. the dealers were in MA, Maine and Virginia and were most helpful. Good luck: Jim Greer
  8. I do not know how anyone could change the mileage on the odometer without getting into the computer and resetting a bit or something. I would hope the folks at Porsche are smarter than that. How cheap is cheap? Did you do a PPI? , have any maintainence records? and for what it's worth, a carfax? You can find out where or who the original dealer was with the VIN # and see if thay have any records. They will have the milage and services performed and the dates they were performed. If the car was serviced at at porsche dealer, with a little leg work, you can see if the service records support the milage on the odometer. What does the car have for options? and what is the milage. I looked at a 99 c2 with 105K for $23 k. Is this a private sale? Good luck
  9. Anyone here whom attends track days and driver ed days have insurance to cover them while on the track or does your regular insurance coverage apply? Attended a recent SCDA event at Limerock Park, plenty of room for an accident there.
  10. I have Nexen tires on my 01 c2. Have not tracked the car so I cant compare. They are holding up very well with approx 3,000 miles on them.
  11. The reason most automotive engines that have a flat opposed or a "V" configuration have an exhaust system that ties both banks together is to equalize the back pressure on both banks or cylinder heads. This will better control the airflow through the engine as a whole, since the air intake comes from a single manifold. If the back pressure was not equal, one bank would get more air flow than the other. This will cause that bank to run leaner or the other bank could run richer as the computer tries to make up for one or the other condition.
  12. You can download a copy of the owners manual on this site. It will have the info there around page 120 for my 03. Inside your tool kit, there is a hex socket with a sliding Tee handle, on the inside of the trunk, remove the carpet on the affected side, remove large round rubber plug, insert hex socket and rotate, I believe clockwise on the drivers side. you will here a snap and see the whole lens assy slide forward. When the lens has freed itself from the clip, you will see inside, slide completely out. The rear lid of the assy is held on by a snap hinge, release and open, all your light bulbe will be accessable. Take much care upon reinsertion to have all the guide tabs in thier appropriate slots. Pay attention to what goes where when removing. An easy job when you have done it a couple of times.
  13. Al; I have a B&M short shifter installed. Looks alot like that one. The handle does stand up straight in neutral. The best part is shifting with a simple rotation of your wrist. Your arm does not have to move. Jim Greer
  14. Loren: As a newbie to the Carrera world, and your site. I would like to let you know your site has proven most useful. As far as the TSB's, I found the list, can and how do you access the content? Specifically on the topic of engine oils. James Greer '01 996 C2 '87 924S
  15. How long should a clutch last, Test drove it today, pulled very strong, no throwout bearing noise. Does anybody have a clutch with that kind of milage? cost to replace? James Greer
