  1. I've been lurking the forum for a long time and searched into a misfire on my 2002 996 manual, coupe. now I need some direct advice. What started as a CEL for misfire on Cylinder #5 has now progressed to a Misfire on Cylinder #4 as well (P0300,P0305,P0304). The car idles fine and has no issues at the top end of the rev range however, a few times it has given just a split second of lag when really getting on it from lower RPM when the car is under load. Not enough for someone riding passenger to notice but as a driver I can catch the small hiccup it makes. After the CEL comes on it will idle a little weird but once the revs come up nothing appears to be wrong. The coils and plugs are newer, about 5K miles on them. I have pulled the plugs/coils on the affected cylinders and have found no visible issues. What I have noticed was the Variocam solenoid on bank #2 is covered in what I assume is oil and gunk (see photo). Is this normal? I will be replacing the solenoid anyways to see if this clears up the issue for the misfire. Would this build up cause the misfire? and does this build up indicate any other issues that I may be missing? This 996 is my first 911. I'm a reasonably good when it comes to mechanic work so working on this car does not scare me as its a hobby not my only mode of transportation. I drive the car regularly so its not sitting. This issue is not consistent nor does it throw a code every time I go for a drive. CEL codes shown: P0300, P0305, P0304 Thank you for any advice or guidance.
