  1. Maybe I don't quite understand the issue. When slowing down, I put in the clutch when the speed gets too low and coast or brake. It is OK to accelerate mildly under low RPM, just don't give it a lot of gas. When creeping at low speed, such as waiting in line for a toll booth, I alternate between 2-3 seconds of mild acceleration with the clutch out and coasting with the clutch in. In low speed situations, driving a clutch is definitely more work than driving an automatic :cursing: However, throwing the shift into 5th or 6th at red line and full throttle definitely compensates :D
  2. My 02 3.2L (47,000 miles) has always been like that. I pretty much just assumed that 1500 RPM was too low an RPM for the engine. I let out the clutch in the 1800-2500 RPM range and drive between 2800-7000 RPM.
  3. This sounds like the kind of problem that happens when the ECU is 'learning' to talk to the MAF. My guess is the battery was probably disconnected or dead and the problem will go away in the first 10-15 miles. Just a guess.

For track and alignment questions - I go to the Boxster Racing Board http://www.iq.dynip.com/~racing/index.cgi?index On the 1998-2002 you generally try to max out the negative front camber with the rear camber .5 more than front (-0.5 front and -1.0 rear would be pretty good). I set total toe to 1/16-1/8.
  5. We've got Fastrak here in California (similar to the EZPass) and I haven't had any issues using it. I place mine in lower corner of the windshield on the driver's side. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My EZ-Pass works fine in the recommended upper window position. It looks ugly from the outside, but I can't see it from the driver's position as it is 100% hidden behind the rear view mirror. In NY I went with the inside unit mainly because they wouldn't mail the license plate version unless your vehicle was on the list of 'problem' cars for the inside version. The usual problem with hand holding is holding the unit wrong side out or upside down (the words should face inside and be upright). I have handheld succesfully several times using a rental car.   6. re: The only tool I had to buy in addition to my normal craftsman toolsets was a set of triplesquare bits for 1 bolt on the transmission bellhousing. Encouraged by your post (I used to do my own work 20 years ago), I am planning on replacing my Boxster S clutch this weekend (if UPS Next Day really arrives tomorrow). What size triplesquare bit will I need? Also, can I replace the CV joints (near transaxle) without special tools? Ad Sach
  7. This part is about $20 for the whole thing. For my time and trouble, I would just go down to a local dealer and pick one up. YMMV
  8. Full glass coverage($0 deductible) on auto insurance usually only costs about $5-10/yr. In the last 10 years, our family has replaced at least 5 windshields on 4 different cars totaling about 500,000 miles. IMO full glass coverage is money well spent.
  9. Your car should not feel like :drive: in any kind of scary way at high speed. Top down/up I could drive with 2 fingers at any speed. I use both hands but that is mostly to look "racy" ;) Like everyone else, the way to fix this is to go down the list of possibilties: Check tires - tread, balance, pressure, wear - Always use premium tires and the Hunter 9700 for balancing, you CAN tell the difference Check Alignment - If you have never had a specialty shop do a premium alignment, your car is not aligned right. Unless you get a LOT of bumps or a crash, a good alignment will often last 2 years or more. I like to max out negative front camber and do front -0.5 (more neg camber) in the rear, factory toe. Torque all the suspension components and check for wear. Check for loose/missing/broken aerodynamic components.
  10. I agree with Sinbad - when I first start off in the morning, I think of the first mile or so as warming the engine temp, tires, and transmission. Once all systems are go, I let her loose :) Mine is an 02S an the 6-speed usually takes more of a warmup than the 5-speed. It doesn't bother me to wait for the transmission to warm up as there is little point in speed shifting when the engine and tires aren't ready.
  11. I have a similar product. These are great - not just a way to show off. Having the ability to put the top up and down at 15-20MPH gives one freedom on city driving to not put the top up at the first hint of rain, but to 'wait it out' knowing that you can get the top up in a hurry when needed. It extends top down driving into 'almost' bad weather just like seat heaters extend top down driving into 'almost' too cold weather. I'm a strong proponent of anything which helps keep a Boxster topless :)
  12. room... If I were you, I'd try to get those pictures of your engine before it goes away. Of course, I'd also have a conversation with Porsche before I started laying out my money for an engine solution. If you have a sleeved engine, you didn't get the same engine that Porsche advertised and that most other Boxster's received. It doesn't really matter who was the original owner, a case can be made that your car "wasn't right" from the factory.
  13. IMO - Your car should have at least one really good alignment in it's life. Factory alignment is usually not all that good after the springs settle. Your best bet is to ask Porsche 'track junkies' until you keep hearing the same name mentioned, usually an independant Porsche Shop. Sometimes a speed shop will know what to do, but the Boxster alignment (especially front) takes a bit of patience and some Porsche knowledge to get the camber right. I would start with the folks who run your local Porsche Club Driver's Ed events http://www.lsrpca.com/DE/DE.html If you email the DE chairman and flag chief they will probably have a good suggestion - of course they may also try to get you out driving on Texas World Speedway :)
  14. If your "Battery died after I have owned 10 weeks.", I would hope the dealer would call you right back. I'd say they owe you some good will service. I had a transmission go out on a used car from a (non-porsche) dealer after about 2 months - they sold me a new transmission at their cost.
  15. One thought - email the manufacturer about the expected life of the tire. If the Boxster was parked outdoors in the texas sun or the tires show fading or cracking in the sidewalls I wouldn't trust them. While I have done 150 MPH+ a few times, I personally would be real hesitant about taking 5 year old tires over 80MPH if they haven't been garaged and treated with a protectant (like black again). P.S. If you can afford it, I would splurge - New tires, Hunter 9700 balancing (it really is better!), 4 wheel alignment (man what a feeling). If so inclined you could also go for wider wheels and an aggressive (track ready) alignment. IMO - 225 or 235 in front really let a Boxster shine.
  16. Mee, Good write-up. My experience agrees with what you said: ContiSportContacts - sub-par traction, terrible tread life, noisy. Pzero - good traction, poor tread life, very noisy after 3K miles, poor in the rain ES-100 - traction similar to PZERO, poor tread life(but less expensive), QUIET, excellent in rain PS2 - never tried 'em. Probably the best street choice, but I also like my ES-100 because I need the wet traction in my daily driver.

  19. check your medications Dell - noone said anything about cheap tires. SantAmbroglio has noisy, fast wearing, poor rain performance Pirellis in the back and a tire I personally no nothing about on the front. Front to back he is badly matched. I don't even want to guess at his tire pressures. Does he drive his BMW when it rains? Is the boxster his toy car? freeway commuter? track devil? Does he value top down driving (quiet tires)? Does he always have his stereo at full blast and doesn't care? Does he take his boxster to the ski slopes because it has heated seats? Is 17" inch the right size wheel? If you want to only discuss "N" rated tires, then feel free to offer your advice within the universe of "n" rated tires - I'm not stopping you. I personally wanted to know abit more about SantA's driving needs before offering a "one size sort of fits all" answer.
  20. Thanks for the diagram. If the "mirror base" is half inside the mirror housing #2 and half outside, then the assembly is 996 731 219 04 or 996 731 219 05. The broken part is visually #16 999 650 173 40 - but I find it hard to believe they would describe a metal part of mechanical value as part of the wiring harness. I'll need to disasemble things and look at the parts to make sure.
  21. IMO - Buy high performance tires of good sizes, keep them properly infalted, and forget about the Porsche OEM "N" ratings. If you are planning on having this be a show car, it might matter. If you are planning on selling your car to a dealer so they can resell it as certified pre-owned if might be worth $20 for the "n" rating, otherwise buy good tires. Having 2 different model tires front and rear is a much bigger problem that having the OEM label stamped in the tires sidewall. - - - For advice on buying tires, please tell us how and where you drive - we have LOTS of opinions on tires :D .
  22. The driver's side mirror snapped off my 2002 S this AM. Basically the surfaces that slide against each other when folding the mirror failed to fold the other way and snapped a hollow dowel section (sorry no photo - digital camera was stolen) The dealer parts lady said I need to replace the center module 996 731 21904 G2C for about $270 (part only) #1) Is this the right part at the right price? #2) Right now I am holding the mirror onto the mirror base with racer's tape. If I glue these parts together on the normal mating surfaces(making the mirror non foldable) will it make it harder to fix when the replacement part arrives?
