  1. Amen to that!! I use my OPC for the 4 letter dirty word only (FPSH) and the rest goes to Autofarm and my girl has never been happier. I am 6K miles into my 997 seal fitted by Autofarm but they also did the IMS which was my leak point. It was the first one they had put into a 996 but so far all good. Peter
  2. mm… Topical or what... Doing a late night dash last night through London after working a 14 hour day came round a corner to find a wash out caused by a recently burst water main that took my front left tire clean out. Dead.. :censored: No rim dent, but no side wall either and I had checked my air pressures in the morning when I filled the car. It hurt and probably hurt the front end but that’s a secondary issue. Net result.. If no spare, I would have been stuck waiting for a tow until 2AM rather than fixing it and limping home with a hurt ego. Peter
  3. There is a few TSB's on the topic including new front and rear mounting points. I have been contemplating the changes but have not yet. Is there anyone that has done the rear mount point replacement? Thoughts? PL
  4. I just went through this loop.. Turned out to be 2 mildly cracked coils. At your age / distance expect them to go. PL
  5. My office is in Datchet Berkshire. I don't get there a lot however Mind if I drop in on you some day and prove the C4 issue? PL
  6. Just tried a TekMate on my UK MY99 996 C4 with no joy. TekMate explained that the 99 was not ISO compliant at that time. Is there any difference with a ROW v's US car in this regard for a 99 C4? Did you get a unit and does it work? Peter
  7. Ok. Just got some weird advice from Porsche UK. They have stated that the new RM seal is only compatible with 997 & Post 2001 996's. They tried to sell me a 996 revised in place. 1. Is this another example of parts department sales creativity? 2. Was there a new TSB or test tool for the 997 seal? Some days I kinda hate being in this country. Peter
  8. Ok.. Todays News. The P code they based my GBP 3K quote was a not present P1341 only. It never actualy came up with a CEL. Since I have taken my car back I have: 1. Drained / replaced the existing fuel with some nice new Optimax 2. Cleaned / inspected my MAF. 3. Re-set my computer. So far on it's last run it did not start hunting but it is still idling down at about the 600 RPM mark but it seems quite happy.
  9. Sigh... I am with you on your rip-off statement. I am not sure how they felt they could invent what they did and not get questioned. When I stated lumpy I mean to say that it kind of hunts between 600-800 and the exhaust note is kind of blippy for a lack of better term to describe it. Even if what they diagnosed is right, what's the chance of long term damage if I drive it off their lot?
  10. I have been hit by the PCar vampire again & its determined to make me a poor man. My 99 C4 Cab developed a lumpy idle resting at about 600 rpm when warm. Until it’s warm it runs like a dream, full power and full enjoyment. Once it’s warm however I have to watch it preparing to stall when idle. Once I nurse it off the mark it runs ok but I can hear the exhaust not running to it’s usual note. When I dropped it into my only OPC within 50 miles and got them to stick a tester on it, there were no codes or faults present. They scratched their head and asked me to leave it with them. Net result, I got the quote back today stating: Camshaft Vario Unit Bank 1-3 is faulty Parts £ 409.37 Labour - 7 hours - £ 553.00 Camshaft Vario Unit Bank 4-6 is faulty & leaking Oil Parts £ 409.37 Labour - 7 hours - £ 553.00 Rear Main Oil Seal Parts £ 400.93 Labour - 6-8 hours - £ 537.20 Prices do not include VAT 1. Can both banks go at once? 2. What are the alternate diagnostics and cheap fixes I can use before I empty my account in the search for happy motoring? 3. They only diagnosed the RMS during the last service 2 months ago. What are the chances they saw oil and assumed that it was RMS? 4. What the chance this could all be caused by the variocam solenoid on bank 4-6 alone? Cheers Peter
  11. Stupid question but what product do you mean when you say "ATF"? PL
  12. I can't argue with you. From the TSB and all I am reading it's a seepage / weeping issue in the design and not a catastrophic failure for 99% of the cars affected. The problem is... If you are that 1% it's seriously game over.. What the heck. A Vikings funeral is about the only fitting end for a PCar. Drive it hard and kill it when it feels happiest rather than leaving a nice museum piece. What was that stupid add they have, '40% of all of the PCar's ever made are still on the road'. Perhaps they were the ones not enjoyed by their owners? PL
  13. Well..... What to say. My MY99C4 Cab (m) 64K Miles has just signed me up for the club. It seems to be weeping rather than gushing today, but that is today. Dry for 5 years. Pity. PL
  14. I have a strange one for the techies in the crowd. My MY99 C4 Cabriolet ROW has developed an interesting habit. When the fuel level drops below ¾’s but above ½ a tank there is a very strong and very distinct gas smell in the cabin. It’s pretty much 100% of the time, not at start but when warm and not connected with fast or slow travel such that I can close it down any further. Any one want to second guess my OPC before they charge me for the pleasure? It’s in being looked at but I strongly doubt they will get it first time. Cheers. Peter
  15. Right..... Now I am really angry. As suspected. They have declared it a "mechanical fault" caused by the striker plate. If the rust had not happened under the striker plate they would have covered it. For good measure they spotted a bit on my hardtop so they are doing that for free. Not amused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1. They claim that Service Bulletin 4/99 5726 New Door Latch Striker (dated 12-17-99) was not issued in the UK. 2. They claim that at no time have they conducted this repair under LLG. 3. They claim that this is effectively a user mediated problem. Does anyone know. A. If this SB was released in the UK. B. Where else I can look for real evidence of P-car's approach. Sympathy or legal fighting fund contributions appreciated. PL
  16. Hey all… Thanks for the good oil as usual. The car is in, awaiting verdict so to speak and not yet aware of the formal response. Given what I now know however I am going to be making it blunt and obvious that I am aware of the shortcomings of their design and the impact on Long Life. Humph… I have found a new tactic that tends to get progress with them.. Put the car in for a service and refuse to pay or collect until they address the warranty issue.. Here’s hoping it works this time. News soon. Peter
  17. Am just about to go in to bat against my UK OPC for rust on my 99 C4 Cab. It’s bubbling the paint from under the door strikers and spreading outwards on both doors. 1. Has anyone tackled their OPC for rust and won? 2. Has anyone else seen this problem? I was given a vague statement that this is a mechanical defect (striker plate causing damage) not body defect so I am starting to think that this will not be honoured under the terms of the Guarantee. All advice or parallel history appreciated. Peter
  18. Last Qn: Where would be the best, safest in cabin place to wire in a socket or always live connection for a maintainer? I was going to use one of those 1W solar units for the 3 weeks due to power reach issues but it's all looking messy. PL
  19. Relief... My sanity was in doubt as even my owners manual stated that it should be live. Am almost tempted to stump up the $$ for an OEM one to see the fun of them trying to explain why it does not work and that they should not have to fix it. Any one for a spot of dealer baiting? Peter
  20. Ok.. I am really confused now. <_< I was just about to go buy a battery maintainer due to going away for 3 weeks when I noticed something that is going to be an issue for me. My cigarette lighter powers down when the key is out and I am pretty darn sure that I am not going to be charging much with a closed circuit. The car is a 99 996 C4 ROW purchased in the UK. Does this story sound familiar, am I being silly or is there something I need to do here before I can leave my baby alone at nights? Many thanks. Peter :help:
  21. Hi. Sorry for what might be a silly post. I have been trying to find out if there is an issue / options with using the RTS and a hardtop. I want to leave the hard top on but take some bikes away. I am about to acquire the RTS but can’t seem to find advice on the matter. To make things worse my MY99 C4 Cab is in the shop getting an exhaust upgrade and with it any chance of reading the owners manual. From what I can see the hardtop would fowl the Cab RTS mounting points so my suspicion is that the answer is no, but I am the optimist. Cheers Peter
