  1. You do not have to spend that much money, I would not go through a porsche mechanic. But first, yes, find out the cause. If it is a cracked header, you can get away for about $2k including installation. (you can get a refurbishe header here in USA in Costa Mesa. I can find the address/site). If you have a cracked cilynder sleeve (like it happened to me) yes you are looking at more money as the whole engine needs to come apart. You are basically looking at 70% of the bill for hourly labor. Thus, do not get it fixed through a dealer as their rates are much higher. Porsche has lowered the price of their refurbished engines substantially. Installing an engine is around 2k only, in labor.
  2. All I know is that I drive mine cab in carpool lanes in Orange County for years with 2 passengers total including myself.. Even had a cop kick me out because i was by myself at 3pm, carpool empty and did not realized I was in carpool, and did not stop me. I guess a car is a car, 2 seater or 4. Lucked out in that one.
  3. The window glasses have a small screw to regulate the vertical tilt, all the way in the bottom of door. Don't remember if outside (need to remove door panel see DIY here) or outside. This could help to make sure the window is not too tight.
  4. Loren, Could you perhaps list the part numbers? Called around and nobody claims to have the metal version, just plastic. Thanks!
  5. Consider the following: If the transmission is going, you might as well drive it until it breaks. It could be years. Not using it will not prevent it from getting worse, so you might as well use it while it lasts.
  6. The same happened to me 6 months ago, on a 3.4 engine. Rebuilt Porsche engines go for 13k plus tax plust install.... 15k. Remanufactured engines from other sources go for 6to 8k. I would stay away from non comprobable sources as it is possible that you buy a remanufactured engine whereas they utilize used pieces instead of new ones. LN will charge around 4k for the NiCkies and yes they are a better alternative to the standard Porsche Sleeves.... but you still have to pay for labor and that is expensive you are looking about the same amount of having somebody rebuilding the engine... plus the 4k. Ultimately, I had my engine rebuilt locally (in Orange County) by a shop recommended by Philipj in this forum. www.visionmotorsports.com. Dwain is a good guy, builds racing engines, and did a rebuild for half the price than a Porsche sourced engine, with all the updates too. You might want to give him a call. A good indie can rebuild the engine. Pieces are not too expensive it is most the labor. Just make sure you trust the indie. Good luck.
  7. FRP is fibre glass.. reinforced. I'd be vary of getting the front bumper if you are planning on using the car often... it will crack easily on potholes and so forth. The rear bumper/skirts should be ok as they almost never hit the floor. I am curious to know about them too.. kit looks good. If you find out prices, please let us know.
  8. Hey Philip! Yes, this seems to be the beggining of the same situation. Perhaps I should just sell the engine as it is newly rebuilt, and call it a day. In the other hand, after engine and tranny, there is not much left in terms of major components.... yeah right The funny thing is that for 10k I can get a 67 fastback in decent condition from an ol' man that nobody knows of...... and still have the 911 for a while
  9. 99 tip C2, 110,000 miles... just got engine rebuilt... and now the tip is starting to slip. Took to mechanic and it seems that indeed the trannie is in its last stages. Whether it will last several months or less it is hard to predict. Option 1. Getting a rebuilt tip transmission. The only place I could find is Vertex Auto. The whole job would be around 4-5k. The problem is that I have not heard other than not so good stories about going in this route: It is my understanding that because Porsche does not sell tip parts, the only way to rebuild them is to mix and match parts from used transmissions. This makes sense as a core tip is worth to Porsche only $400, that's all. So, you purchase a rebuilt trannie and it is really a "remixed" trannie. Option 2 is to get it new from Porsche. Installed it would be very close to 10k. Ouch, but a brand new trannie, to match with the brand new engine 3k miles ago. What else could go wrong, right? Option 3 would be to get a used trannie with few miles, say 20k or so. The problem here is that if it comes from a wreck, it is likely that the trannie might have been impacted under stress or similar at the moment of the accident. Again, a gamble unless the procedence is from a trusted source. Option 4 is swapping to manual. This is labor intensive and I doubt it could be done for 10k, even dismissing the perceived loss of value due to having a conversion done (currently the car is a complete financial loss anyway). Perhaps there is a shop out there with a solid reputation regarding tiptronics but I have not found it. Any input would be appreciated as I'll need to do something about it soon. Cheers.
  10. Do you like the pedals? Can you post the ebay link? Thanks,
  11. I just received new seat and lumbar foam pads for my front seats. I debated whether I should get new seats, or try to rejuvenate the current ones. I decided on the later and to make a project out of it. I need some good instructions on how to remove the leather lining properly. I have searched and did find some semi decent instructions but nothing that gives me peace of mind. I'd appreciate if somebody can point me in the right direction. Thanks!
  12. Yep. That's what I don't want to hear, any problems with the tiptronic transmission not that I rebuilt the engine. Curiously, the trannie was fine until they changed the fluid at the 90k service a month ago. I have heard that you cannot service Tips. Hopefully either that is not true, or there is nothing wrong.
  13. Loren, What fluid level? How can whatever fluid level affect the throttle? ?? I am taking it in, but I'd like to learn what you mean. Thanks,
  14. I have a tip, but I drive it manual (switching on the steering wheel). The car did this several times today over a long drive of about 280 miles: Several times the revs wen up without me doing anything and having a steady foot. The same revs as I was accelerating from 60 to 65 mph, for example. I thought it might be the transmission changing gears... but I was going in manual and it was not a gear change, just the throttle. Once they went up, the stayed. I had no luck replicating the issue. Although I think it was happening when I was between 3 and 4k rpm. Any ideas?
  15. I guess all the above are with 18" wheels. What about if you are running 19s"?
  16. Yes to radio code. I have an aftermarket radio, so I do not have that issue.
  17. Have you tried to disconnect the battery; place the key 30 feet or more far from the car; and then plug the battery and try the remote? This has worked for me.
  18. Like anything, it is probably possible. But there will be so many pieces other than the dash that you will need to change, and modify, that it would be cost prohibitive. If you notice, the only ones that do that kind of stuff customizing interiors are the major aftermarket brands such as gemballa, ruf, techart, speedart, etc. If you check carefuly you can see that they really mix and match and they also add their custom stuff. But, look at the high prices they command.
  19. Uh?! I was about to order TOMORROW from them, for renewing the boxster red interior. What's your experience? Don't want to mess up things, that's for sure. Perhaps it is more complicated than it looks DIY dye?
