Same thing happened on my 05 Boxster and the dealer replaced the entire control unit under warranty. -

I had the same exact issue on my 05 987. The coating on the fan and temp switch began to peel and the heater control unit was later replaced just before my warranty ran out. I did look for a DIY repair but couldn't find anything that looked suitable. -
I had this same issue and simply stuck a round piece of felt to both sides of the strap in the location shown in red. It seemed to do the trick and my noise was really bad.

Mine has an early Feb 2005 build date and so far no rms issues as I approach 20k. It doesn't use any oil whatsoever and with the exception of a couple of issues with the soft top folding outside of the frame and a broken elastic cable (all fixed under warr) it has been a joy to own.
