  1. I also recommend Marvin at The Rennshop in Santa Clara. He is very knowledgable and really cares about what he does. Unlike the dealer where they just take your money and boot you out the door he takes the time to explain things and actually takes the time to look at your car instead of dismissing your problem. http://www.therennshop.com/ I recently had him replace some seals and replace the clutch as well as some work with the suspension.

  3. Please let us know if you run into any issues with the bulbs! I have a friend of mines that bought something similar to this and the bulbs burned out after a year, he had to replace the kit since the bulbs were not replacable parts. I don't know if this is the case for this kit. And by the way... VERY NICE WRITE UP, VERY DETAILED THANK YOU!!!
  4. I just replaced mines not too long ago. It took ALOT of force, luckily I have a convertible so I just put the top down, stood up and pulled. It came off after a lot of effort! It also helped to look at my replacement shift knob so I knew exactly where I could pull without breaking anything. My original shift knob was all scratched up, so for my new one I sprayed on a layer of clear coat just in case (make sure you tape up all the edges).

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but this is more of an FYI, I just figure I would try to save other Porsche owners some frusration on trying to find a diecast model of their car. I've been trying to look for a Car model for my 996 for a few years now and never have been able to find one with the right colors. Either the interior color was off or the exterior color was off but the interior color was right. I found out you can take apart the AutoArt 996's and then spraypaint the interiors to match your car. There are a few hidden screws that you have to remove, 2 screws under each rear wheel that can be seen once you remove the tire from the wheel. 2 additional screws can be seen once you pop out the plastic exhaust part.

  7. I was told by the dealer and by an indepedent shop that I should replace the rotors vs resurfacing them so I ended up just buying rotors. What is your take on this? Have you noticed any performance or issues after resurfacing the rotors? Who do you take it to to resurface the rotors? Any competent automotive machine shop can easily resurface the rotors, as can many well-equipped service stations. As long as you haven't worn the rotors down to near their minimum allowable thickness, they should perform as well as new rotors. Regards, Maurice. Thanks!   9. +1. I think I had about 3 smaller extensions to get to them. I used multiple short extensions, it was definitely a pain in the rear to change out the plugs (must have relatively small hands).
  10. If you still have all the manuals there's a wiring diagram with the becker manual. Another option is to pick up an Audi/VW wiring harness from Metra. I didn't take pics when I did mine, and I don't remember the colour coding. I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to run it through your stock amp since the after market deck has a built in amplifier. What I did was install an aftermarket amp. You can find the wire diagrams by searching the forums. You can also try to power your speakers w/o the aftermarket amp and see if you like how it sounds running through your deck amp. After installing my aftermarket amp I realized how bad the stock speakers were so I upgraded my stock speakers to infiniti.
  11. One thing I can tell you is after I had my aftermarket flywheel installed the transmission is noticably louder on acceleration and at idle. On the positive note the car appears to reach the higher RPM's faster.
  12. TIPS: 1. In order to remove the brake sensors, be very gentle and just pull on the plastic piece that fits in the grove on your brake pad. 2. For some reason the caliper bolt replacement I received used a different tool (a Torx T-55 I believe) to screw in versus the old one, so you'll need a Torx T-55 3. Remove the mounting bracket of the brake line with a 10 mm socket so that you don't accidentally bend the line too much when you are moving the caliper around 4. To replace the rotors you just remove the 2 screws on the rotor once the caliper is off so it's pretty easy to do, if you can't get it off with a screw driver use an impact driver so you don't risk stripping the screws on the rotors 5. Sunset Porsche sent me the wrong dampeners, so I ended up just reusing my old ones. All I did was pry off the old dampeners, cleaned off all the residue with brake cleaner and applied brake quiet to the metal plate. I drove the car for a few miles and so far no sqeaks (hopefully it stays that way). The important thing to remember is to remove all the residue from the old dampeners so that you get a nice flat surface to apply the disc quiet. (drove the car for a few hundred miles and so far and have not heard the front brakes squeaking at all, so you can resuse your old dampeners if you want but I probably wouoldn't resuse your old dampeners more then 1-2 times, I used a red bottle of "disc quiet" I bought from Kragen for $5 and applied it on the old dampeners)
  13. Don't forget to read stories (from Motor Trend) every once in a while so it doesn't get lonely!
  14. It will be a while before I replace the steering rack. So far this is what I've replaced at The Renn Shop. Front suspension, front suspension mounts, sway bar links. The next 2 things on my list to replace are the ball joints (control arms) and steering rack but that will have to wait. I will have to talk to Marvin at The Renn Shop to arrange a time. Please let me know also if you made any progress. (This noise is driving me insane!)
  15. Depending on the position of the car when you drain the oil, the amount that drain's out can be as high as 10 quarts. I usually have to refill with 10 full quarts in my 99. Check for oil leaks, my oil pressure use to flucuate quite a bit but after my seal replacements I don't see that issue anymore.
  16. Yes the mechanic checked them and said they were fine. Do you think it could be the steering rack? He said it was slightly loose. The thing that really baffles me is it only happens after prolonged driving and once the car cools off, there is no noise. If the steering rack is loose then it needs to be tightened. Thanks! I will ask him about it and hopefully that resolves my issue.

  18. Check out the DIY writeups. There is a section there that shows you how to repair wheel damage, other option is to try to contact the dealer listed in renntech to see how much it is for a new rim. It will be cheaper then going through your local dealer. Good Luck!
  19. Hi After driving my car for 30 miles + I notice there are noises coming from the front driver side of the car anytime I go over bumps. When the car cools off the noise is gone. I took it to a Porsche dealer and paid for a full inspection and they found no physical signs of damage, I also took it to a local Porsche Shop and had them replaced the front 2 shocks, springs, and bearings and the noise still exists. There are no loose nuts or tie rods (or anything obviously loose) when it was on the lift and we were not able to reproduce the noise on the lift even after driving 30 + miles. I'm pretty much out of ideas and this noise is annoying. What do you think it might be? Thanks, Raymond
  20. I've used many tires in the past and personally I still like the Bridgestone's S03 tires. They seem to grip better then the P-Zero's. I don't have much exerience with Continental's or Michelin Diamaris so I can't comment on those. If you want current prices check out tirerack.com.
  21. Hi, My aftermarket warrenty is about to expire (General Western) and I want to take my car to get it inspected. I wanted to take it to Euro Motorcars to get it inspected since they work on Porsches and they are alot closer. Does anyone have any experience with this shop?   23. By "decorating" you are surely refering to a complete aero package, new wheels/tires, sports exhaust and window tint...right? Surely you aren't refering to flowers, bows, window paint and dragging beer cans! Good luck. LOL...... man I wish.... I would have rather do that then have a wedding ceremony but the future misses would kill me..
  24. Hi, I'm getting married in a few weeks and wanted to decorate my car for the wedding but I don't have any ideas on how to do it. I want to do it tastefully but I can't seem to find any examples online of other Porsches that were decorated for weddings. Do you guys have any photos or have any ideas on how to do it?
