  1. tough for a 911 driver to go to an econobox commuter for sure so i feel for u. :) i've actually heard the opposite. my clutch when new (about 7K miles ago) felt springier than the older clutch which was the original. maybe it's that i've gotten used to it but the clutch action is about the same now (i.e. it got harder to press). good luck w/ the engine. that'd be very odd for a reman engine from porsche to fail... rarely happens. rarely. like the original ones should've been.
  2. Sorry to report, but no revelations here. Just got the car back this morning. The groaning noises are gone. My indy (www.cantrellmotorsport.com) simply greased up parts here and there. He tells me everything looks healthy. While there, I had the engine mounts replaced. The original ones were fine (i.e. no leaks), but figured I'd just do it before they pop since I have about 57K miles on my 2002 now. This car gets better and better, though sometimes I do wish for that V8 mid-engine F-car. :)
  3. to my great disappointed, i picked up a set of new PS2s and one of the front tires was out of round straight from the factory. for such a high performance and expensive street tire, you'd think michelin would have this basic feature of a tire sorted out, but no. i had to get a new one after a couple days worth of wait time to get the car back in motion. pretty pathetic if you ask me.

  6. 993.375.049.06 Motor mount -- US MSRP $155.30 each (2 required). Here's what I was quoted by Phil Coy at Sunset: 993-375-049-06 mounts $129.55 ea. X 2 999-084-215-09 locking nuts $1.15 ea. X2 Loren and Phil both work at light speeds. :) Thank you!
  7. Anyone have the part numbers for all the motor mounts needed to do a full replacement of the originals? I'm just going get new ones at 57K miles.
  8. it's easy to resort to the aesthetics to cut something down. one can call the s2000 bland all day just as the next guy can call the porsche 911 a toad (it really does look like one while the s2000 may resemble a pokemon - choose your weapon). the s2000 is a super value. i loved that car. it's pure sports car, everything bespoke, and feels like a go-kart which the 3-400lbs+ heavier 99X will never be able to pick-up....supercharged w/ 100000% peace of mind. it was that reliable for me and hundreds of others running the same setup. as for the s54 engine being in the same club as the M9X... no way. 1) it impacts far fewer early engines back in the early 2000s; 2) bmw provided a fix for it via a service bulletin clearly listing the parts impacted/replaced (porsche what?); and 3) bmw backed it with an awesome peace of mind warranty (porsche what?). you go to the m3 forum all day and there is NO talk about replacement engines, reman verbiage, running into gutted E46 m3 chassis at your local indy shop. S54 is a very reliable, bulletproof engine. the m9X... not even close. Porsche failed by not even beginning to give owners a clue as to why it happened and what they're doing to make sure it doesn't happen again... and in some cases... again. this is all coming from a guy that LOVES his 996 c4s and adores that pse enhanced flat six n/a sound (arguably the best sounding engine out there at partial throttle blvd cruising speed - think jet engine) and would never trade it for the s54 or any bmw M car.... but this guy's c4s has a factory reman engine replaced at 13K miles under original warranty with 57K on the clock of trouble free miles. plus i have a warranty right now as well. every little bit helps eh. :D
  9. Silly me for biting. The M96 is after all, a high stress motor extracting lotsa bhp for its displacement, and the one in mine make's it a blast (hopefully not literally) to drive, so I can't be too hard on Porsche AG. My Honda F20C that's a 2.0 liter pumping out 240hp (120hp/liter) with a ~9K redline is "high stress" and has proven to be supremely reliable since the very beginning for many users. There is little to no talk about "remanufactured" engines or an engine swap program at Honda. Same goes for my other ex-car the S54 pumping out well over 100hp/liter. Porsche gets poor grades with the M96. It's a sweet, sweet engine when it works, but I would never recommend to anyone to buy a 3.4 original factory motor 996 MK1. I'd say don't do it unless you're ready to cash out $15K and not feel like you got bent over. $15K buys you some very nice vacations wherever in the world for two people. Spend it on a replacement engine where the original should've always worked just fine for many, many miles of pleasure in the first place or take a nice 2 week Hawaii getaway in Lanai with your loved one in the Dolphin suite overlooking Manele Bay? The 3.4 engine is unreliable and has a good chance of self-destructing on you at any given moment. The 3.6 less so, but even then I'd still insist on a reman motor 911 that was replaced under factory warranty. There are enough out there to pick from. I was just at my indy shop today. Not a big shop. Two M96 911s getting engine transplants. ***** poor form, Porsche.
  10. Yes, that was a while ago and the noise has come back, but slightly different, but still very similar. Perry, your efforts and knowledge are invaluable here so thx, again. Anderson, thx for the link as well. I'm just tired of the noise and just want it silent. I'm dropping off my car at the indy for inspection early next week. I'll be sure to post what I discover and leverage the info here to ameliorate or get rid of the noise all together.
  11. interesting. i'm thinking about swapping out the c4s stock control arms as they are now with the gt3 control arms which are adjustable just to get new components in there and less so for the adjustability since i don't really need it. no, i didn't read on the other boards. had I, then i wouldn't be posting, right? thx for your response. p.s. do you have a part number or description for the stock strut bearing that i would want to use in case mine just uses the rubber spacer?
  12. When I maneuver at slow speeds (e.g. parking lot) and when the car has been driven around for a bit (warmed up), my car makes a creaking noise like a rubber on rubber type. I had the shop check it out and they tell me there's just not enough room down there so my control arm is rubbing against something like a sway bar (I forget exactly what he said to me). He told me the only way to really begin to make the noise go away is to raise the car to give things more room to move below. I actually have aftermarket drop links so there's clearance there. Any of you guys on PSS9s *lowered like mine* dealing with the same noise issue? My indy said it's OK to drive it the way it is, but next time around, consider raising the car and to start fresh, get new control arms in there. Thanks for your time and attn.
  13. every manual shifter i've owned.. s2000 (best), E46 m3 w/ UUC (short shift kit) and now 911 c4s (B&M unit) has a notchier shift feel upon a cold start than once warmed up. i'm not sure trying to swap fluids for a smoother first morning out of the garage result is all that desireable/value adding. heck, i don't shift above 3k until after having driven at least 5-10 miles.. just trying to get all the car's fluids warmed up. i just stay with the stock fluid. call it good and enjoy the drive. thx for sharing tho.
  14. if it's coming towards the rear.. like mine.. my indy told me it's the pressure plate... and i just got a new clutch. say it's normal.
  15. xenon is the name the actual chemical element that plays a significant part in emitting that powerful light in high intensity discharge bulbs. litronic is just a fancy schmancy marketing term created by porsche. it's the same thing as a xenon or more accurately HID lighting systems in a lot cars these days. the next big deal is using LED lighting for the low beam. you're already seeing these in the Lexus LS for the first time ever and I believe the V10 R8 will feature a full LED headlight system. bi-xenon means the low and high beams are both HID lights. people use xenon, HID, litronics interchangeably. the most accurate way to refer to these systems is HID lights. or you can use what porsche calls 'em... litronics. porsche's litronics aren't even the best in the industry. the s2000 has a great HID system. but this is hair splitting.
  16. it's pretty common and somewhat more involved than jus greasing stuff up without taking things apart no big deal.

  18. Just did a 250 mile run today with my son. Up and down some nice mtn roads, great twisties, and some great food in between. :D Could hear it at a stop light after the first 100 miles or so, and plenty of other stops along the way back. I do not believe hot/cold affects it at all. But for now, I'm driving it as is. Thanks! Interestingly, my 996 C2 Cab has a slight squeaky noise when engaging the clutch, but only noticable in dry humid weather. If its cold or raining (therefore more moisture in the air) there is no squeak at all. I've heard that the problem is common too and most people leave it. Dave i had my clutch replaced with all new parts including bolts and flywheel all factory about 5K miles ago. it's likely the pressure plate and can't be avoided. even if you get a new one there's no guarantee it'll be squeak free. i'm just considering it a quirk/character of owning a porsche 911 and have learned to live with it. i don't notice it unless i'm thinking about it. enjoy the drive. it's quite common.
  19. correct. the mufflers "bed in" and it usually gets slightly deeper kinda like new subs.
  20. This happens to mine. It's usually first thing in the morning you drive for a bit and come to a stop light. The fan kicks in for a bit and if you happen to move off at the same time, the exhaust sounds really "gurgly". I personally don't like the sound, but this is normal operation.
  21. your hood doesn't look right. how much did you spend in total for this?
  22. i find it comical that people clown on the new lexus IS-F faux tip when in fact the whole point of a tip is completely cosmetic.
  23. just get the latest porsche factory reman engine you can get from the dealership (e.g. sunset porsche in Oregon). not sure if it's worth the expense and hassle of fitting the 3.6 into your 99 with the cable throttle. this way you know everything is clean from factory and you get a two year warranty on top of it. when you go outside the factory, things get pretty hairy and complex (not worth the headache imo)
  24. congrats bud. the porsche service dept should be able to check service history and tell ya if it's got a reman. the serial number thing isn't always reliable.mine got replaced at 13K miles a few years ago. no issues so far with 55k miles. it's a great thing if you have a reman replaced under factory warranty. you might have the porsche sport exhaust thus the aggressive sound. check under the hood for options list.
  25. sucks to hear your story man i feel for you. there's still a large contingency of porsche fan boys on porsche forums who continue to deny that these stories somehow represent but a nominal quanitity in the big scheme of things. i disagree. the stories are far TOO common in this NICHE communication place to have the engine catastrophies be .... inconsequential. call me paranoid, but if i had an m96 original engine, without a warranty aka insurance policy, i would seriously have trouble fully enjoying the car.
