  1. So, what did you do? Pull the end of the hose through the firewall to get to the clamp or stick your hose clamp pliers through the opening in the firewall? Please clarify.
  2. Hi, Loren. Thank you for sharing the article. There is a major typo on page three: "The crankshaft, a two-piece affair, could also be split, re-aligned and bolted together with stronger bolts." Does the Mr. White really mean the crankcases or the crankshaft saddle? In Paul Frere's "Porsche 911 Story" the author states that the 3.6 L motors from 2002 on have thicker main journals giving a more rigid crankshaft. Also, the gear box has an additional input shaft bearing next to the clutch to control vibrations. Is there any data that suggests the 2002 and newer models are less prone to RMS leaks?
  3. Good instructions and pictures. However, why remove the snorkle when it is well shaped to enhance air flow to the air filter housing? The pictures indicate that with the snorkle removed the inlet tract will not be as smooth resulting in greater pressure loss. Also, with the restrictor plate removed how do you prevent water from entering the air filter housing? Why not remove only the lower part of the restrictor? Has anyone done a flow test or dyno test to see if removal of these components actually increases HP and torque? It appears to be too ricey if all the mod does is increase noise.
  4. I agree. I always understood that WD40 was a solvent and a cleaner more that a lubricant (unless one has a need for a very thin, light duty lubricant). For door hinges and similar joints (top, trunk lids) I've always used bicycle chain lube.
  5. Hi, Moose. I would be very hesitant to put an oil rated CF but with no SJ (current is SM) rating in my engine. The additive package in a CF only oil may or may not be compatible with a gasoline engine.

  8. I was able to clean my radiators without removing the bumper cover. I found a 24"-30" length of thin wall tubing the OD of which would slip between the inlet louvers. I adapted the tube to my wife's vacuum and was able to remove all of the big pieces and 99% of the sand and dirt. I think the tube was a piece of bath towel hanger rod. Worked great. give it a try.

  10. I did not see any suitable jacks at the Concord, CA Sears for a reasonable price. I bought this jack at Kragen's in Oakland, mostly for its low height. Powerbuilt Aluminum Racing Jack weight - 43 pounds capacity - 2 tons range - 3-1/2"-17-3/4" Cost - $149.
  11. Oct 14, 3:23 PM (ET) DIJON, France (AP) - Eric Clapton won't be driving in France for a while. Police said they clocked the rock star speeding down a highway at 134 mph and suspended his license. Radar caught Clapton whizzing down a highway Tuesday in his Porsche 911 Turbo at 53 mph above the speed limit, police said. He was stopped near the town of Merceuil, south of Beaune, near Dijon and some 190 miles east of Paris. Police confiscated Clapton's British driver's license, suspending his right to drive in France. Clapton, 59, took the bad news well, agreeing to a photo session with police. After paying a $922 fine, he then rolled away in his Porsche - this time in the passenger seat with his secretary behind the wheel, police said Thursday. Clapton can still drive in Britain, but he will have to recover his license through a diplomatic route, police said. A court hearing, at which he need not be present, will determine the time his license is suspended in France.
  12. Hi, all. My 2001 2.7L Tip has had a creaking noise coming from the center/right side of the dash. It sounds like two pieces of metal clicking/rubbing against each other. The sound only occurs when the car is travelling over an uneven surface or when turning from a level surface to an inclined surface, like my driveway (causing the chassis to flex). It does not matter if the car is turning or travelling in a straight line. I don't think it is a steering or suspension problem because it does not occur over normal bumps. One dealer told me there is a "tube" running across the dash that sometimes is installed under stress (twisted) at the factory. The fix is to remove the dash to get access to the tube, remove the tube, fill it with foam, and wrap it with felt. Reinstalling the tube also destresses it. Another dealer says that the tube is accessible without removing the dash. It can loosened and then be destressed. This dealer performed this repair and it worked for a few days. The creak now has returned. This is my fourth trip to a dealer and I want to see if I can cure it myself. Question: The "tube" appears to be p/n 996 552 191 00, knee protection strip. It bolts to p/n 996 552 061 02, retaining frame. How do I remove the leatherette knee bolster to access the tube? I want to add some felt where the tube touches other metal parts. Thanks for your help.

  15. Hi, all. I think I have an easier method. I have a 2001 2.7 Tip. I exchanged its stock muffler for a stock S muffler because I just couldn't stand the wierd single oval exhaust pipe. I preferred the duel pipes. After all the various nuts and bolts that hold the muffler in place were loose and/or removed I then removed the two u-bends. This left the muffler hanging from the two long bolts attached to the rear of the tranny. The muffler missed by about 1/8"-1/4" from having enough clearence to be removed. I took a long screwdriver and pushed the horizontal bracket above the muffler away from the tranny. This shifted the long bolts back enough for the muffler to be removed easily. After I fastened the horizontal bracket to the S muffler I noticed that it was bowed toward the front of the muffler. I carefully pulled the bracket toward the rear of the muffler so it had a slight bow toward the read, say 1/4"-3/8". The S muffler then slipped back up in to the rear of the car and two long bolts slipped right into the adapter at the tranny. I hope this helps. Positioning that bracket saved a lot of time.
  16. Thank you for the clarification, Scott. I guess from Loren's parts list above the 01- pushpin version in removable. I guess I'll probably bum some 1/16" scrap aluminum from the machine shop guys downstairs and make a replacement scoop secured with screws.
  17. I have an early '01 so Finland must have used some left over '00 parts on my car. The early version just snapped in place and could fall off easily. The newer version is pinned in-place and won't fall off as easily. However, it can be "popped" loose and hang from the car. That is probably why I've notice something almost dragging on the pavement when I've followed behind another Boxster. Thank you for your help. :clapping:
  18. I found it! It is... 986.331.361.02. The part in the pic does not look like the one on my car. Must be a different year.
  19. It should not make any difference whether the jack or the stand is under the "X". the stress will be the same.
  20. Thanks, Scott. however, that rubber lip fits on the bottom of the black trim piece just in front of the rear tires. The part for which I'm looking is located under the motor close to the centerline. I think it attaches to the bashplate.
  21. Hi, all. I have a 2001 986, 2.7L, Tip. Located near the front edge of the metal underbody tray, or bash plate, that protects the transmission are two black plastic moldings that appear to be air scoops. The left one is missing. Can anyone provide the part number? TIA. Dan
  22. Thank you for the info. Perhaps I saw some Boxsters set up for the track or AX or they had a heavy load in the front trunk.
