  1. I have a brand new set just ordered but decided not to put them on because I may sell my 99/C2. If interested, email me... boo996@gmail.com
  2. yes slbates.. you are right about the ignition switch. I sent it to Bob @ Mountain View. He put a new one in and seems working so far. This is the second time the ignition switch failed. Lucky enough, it's a $16 - $35 part. I think I need to keep a dozen of spare ones. (wel maybe one) Wish I knew, I can do this in 10 mins but I was afraid it was the fuel system or starter motor.
  3. you can adjust the pressure of the glass against the window seal from under the door. 996 Workshop manual documents it quite well. There are 4 plastic caps under the door, one of them has a screw that you can move in and out (horizentally) and one of them you can adjust up and down the height of the glass (actually the stopper). Stiker has nothing to do with it. It's a simple job, you can do it yourself.
  4. well, it started with something like running for 5 seconds and stalled. after a day or two, it simply wouldn't start. No click. nothing happened just the lights are on and stereo are sining my favorite songs.. Need help!
  5. Just happened for a couple of days. Put the key in and start the car. Nothing happen. Radio, head lights are ok. I have to turn if off and on a few times before the car can start and it's getting worst (have to try more times before it starts). Doesn't seem to be the battery because it's almost new. What should I look for? Starter motor or the switch. I changed the switch myself about a year ago.
  6. Get a new gearbox. It costed me $6800 in total to replace with one year waranty from Porsche. No other way as far as I know. There was one new 996 gear box selling on eBay for $2K but I believe someone grabbed it.
  7. hm.. how can we put a 3.6 engine in there.. front engine I suppose..
  8. If you are into sound quality try Alpine. I have Alpine 9833 player (player + 50w amp) with Focal two way coaxial speakers on my 996 (they will fit). Also had even better experience with Alpine CD player/Preamp 7995 (hard to find now) + separate amplifier. If you need GPS, I heard Pioneer is the top player.
  9. Thanks guys. Understand the noise is very labor intensive to locate and fix. BTW, where can I find the TSBs?
  10. I have this squeaking coming from either the driver side dash or inside the door panel, everytime when I hit a bump or when I drive at certain speed on an bad freeway. Sounds like a spring losed its lubrication. i took out the driver side air vent.. thought it was the air duct but it wasn't. Get under the dask.. didn't see anything wrong.. Look into the front trunk area.. nothing. Any idea? I know it's hard for anyone to tell by these description. Could it be the suspension? but it sounded so close. Hope I can get lucky if someone had the similar problem.
  11. Try http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...sspagename=WDVW It will probably cost more to find a LCD panel and replace it.
  12. Probably the easiest way is to replace the whole unit. Last time when I saw on eBay. the control unit is around $150 new.
  13. My engine is dry and clean from outside. I guess I have to start measuring the oil level regularly to see what exactly it drinks. Thanks guys.
  14. My 99 996 drinks about 1 bottle of synthetic almost every month. Doesn't seem to be normal for me. But the engine still runs strong and doesn't seem to have any problem. Can anyone tell me something about 996's oil consumption and what are things that I am missing?
  15. Yeah.. That's the Bob.. Don't know why he lost all his hairs. Too close to the turbo engine heat, I think. Bob, Dan, and DL http://www.realmeangarage.com Note: Not the monster garage. Didn't see Sandra Bullock in his shop. Interesting comments, wwest. I think that's what it was. The car actually thought I was freezing.
  16. Well.. I posted this thread a while back. Here is the sympton - Start the car and turn on the A/C.. got nice cold air.. turn off the car and wait for 10 mins.. then drive the car again - Nothing but hot air. A/C won't work (I suspected the sensor fault, if Loren can still remember it) Burlingame Rector charged me over $1300 and trashed my a/c lines and didn't even know or not willing to fix it.. So I have to find a local a/c shop and spent $700 to restore what Rector trashed. But the hot air still blowing. So I found Bob in Sunnyvale to fix my tranny, I also asked Bob to take a look at it. Well, Bob said, there was one air sensor missing (pass side air sensor). and that was it.. After $2000, we fixed it for a bit more than $100. I can't say anything about Porsche dealers in SF bay areas. Not recommended. Find a good specialty shop to take care of your baby.
  17. Well. I decided to bite the bullet and fix it. Bob in Sunnyvale got me a Porsche rebuilt for $4700 (about $700 less than the dealer) with warranty. We gonna fix the sucker. Bob suggested me to trade it in but i figure I will wait until the second or third year of 997 production or a 993 TT which Bob highly recommended. According to Bob, 996 tranny was built with cost in mind, so there is no way to fix it except swap out the whole thing. I know there are people teasing about 997's Japanese tranny. I rather have a tranny that works or can be easiler repaired, no matter what their nationality is.
  18. ShockProof.. I think my tranny was damaged already.. it will hard to get it back.. But where can I find these?
  19. Guys Dont' get me wrong.. I really like my C2. but it's like sex.. when it's good.. it's really good. heaven.. but when it's bad.. eh.. really sucks. when I missed my 2nd gear.. it so hard to find any other gears... I am still trying to fix it..
  20. My tranny is basically doomed.. trashed or.. whatever by previous owner.. Hot or cold... hard to believe. I was so embarassed when I missed the second gear in the traffic and all cars around me looking at me like.. Dealer.. couldn't count on them. Rector said it will be $3000 just to open it to see what's going on. Porsche North American... A sorry about it email but nothing happened.. I found one 03 tranny less than 7K miles for $3500 with tranny exchange. that's probably my best bet.
  21. It can not be done yourself. I paid the dealer to do it.. a lot.. this is one of the few things that you have to pay the dealer to do it.
  22. Thanks guys.. Does anyone know a good shop in SF bay area that I can try? I was thinking about getting a used trany from LA and have someone here install it. But Scouser could be right. I may just need some parts here and there (save money). Anyone knows how to switch 1 -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> 6 and still maintains the 5 seconds take-off to 60 mph
  23. I guess I am one of the few lucky ones to have a bad transmission.. my 1999 996 2rd gear simply keeps failing.. hard to engage..etc. Rector said I had a bad transmission and the repair cost will be enough for me to buy a 997 instead.. So I found some from 911pcar.com, a junk yard that sells parts. They have the whole transmission, and even engine) but I need some guidelines/thoughts regarding how to do this cost effectively.
  24. No offendse, guys.. Just something also fun to play with. I thought about it doing it this way.. either installing the Traffic Pro or the Navigator on my 996. Then one day I found this little GARMIN eTrex Legend C waterproof handheld for about $280 on eBay. Wonderful design and so easy to use. Now I can pack it with my snack box and hit the trails too. Just buy the car holder, it will work as well inside the car. I heard the Garmin 2420 or Quest are also very good but I like one that can also be used when I go fishing or biking. For less than $300 and just as much fun.
