  1. I know this is an old post, but it helped me to identify loose spark plugs as the culprit (I love a free if fiddly repair!). Having read this, a couple of things that helped point me at that being the likely cause: Stationary in neutral, the chirp/squeak was proportional to engine speed and discontinuous (I would expect a loose/slipping belt to be continuous). Coasting slowly downhill, in gear, lifting off the throttle at something like 1500-2000rpm, the chirp stopped (this is probably related to the system cutting the spark on the overrun when it wasn't required). Touch the throttle lightly and the chirp came back. This was the most convincing thing for me before I did the job of tightening spark plugs and might help others. Only did it on cold start - presumably once everything is warm then the gap seals under expansion.
  2. I have bought a rear speaker subwoofer off Ebay. I didn't realise that the speakers were such a low impedance (found out on here after I'd measured it and thought it might be faulty!). I plan to buy a Haes 6x40W amp (also off Ebay - plenty on there) but I can't find any spec's. Will this amplifier drive the low impedance directly? If it won't work then I'll add a series resistance (currently running both channels off my home hi-fi with a 6 ohm series resistance to make sure that I don't blow the amp). I'm planning to get a couple of crossovers (if I can find some that work with 2 and 1 ohm speakers) to turn the speaker into a stereo speaker (at least for the tweeters) which is going to give me something like 1 ohm minimum impedance (based on the 1 ohm bass speaker). Also, any idea if I can get a plug that will connect to the factory original four pin connector on the speaker? If not I'll replace the complete wiring. Finally, what size pin inserts do I need for the connector that plugs into the amplifier?
  3. I had to replace the headlamps (the plastic appeared "fogged" and was not creating a good pattern for the UK MOT). The car passed the MOT on headlamp aim with new lamps fitted that I had setup to aim downwards a little bit, but the main beam is way too low (I think they only check the dipped beam) - I can see spots on the road not too far in front of the car and there is not the same view down the road. At the rear of the lamp are two adjusters - they both seemed to make the dipped beam aim go up and down. There is a third one at the front that adjusted the fog lamp aim. My question is how to adjust the main beam aim independently so that I can leave the dipped beam at the correct aim to pass the MOT but raise the aim of the main beam to get a good view down the road.
  4. Hope you can help - I tried my girlfriend's front panel from her Landrover (Becker BE4765) to see if it works, but now my Porsche radio needs it's code and I was never supplied with it when I bought the car second-hand! Hope someone can help with the code for this: CR 22 BE 4367 Serial X5015563 Thanks Also, if anyone knows where to get the code for a BE4765 (serial 75030541) then I'd be grateful
  5. PC: Is this the part you are talking about? From your description and the general location where you found it, it sounds like it: Tool Pants had posted this photo on another thread. If so, these are plugs that cover the spinlocks (near the base of the B-pillars) when they are not being used for either holding down the hardtop or Speedster Humps. Regards, Maurice. Yes! That's the item. Thanks. I can see from the manual where to fit it back.
  6. The other day the hood went a bit lop-sided when opening it. I reversed it a little way and then tried again and it went down fine. When I got to work the triangularish piece of plastic trim on the metal lid that opens a little to allow the hood to close had worked lose and came out with the hood. When I went to put it back I found a plastic plug (I'm trying to attach it to this post but even though the photo is only 7kb the upload part of the dialog is sitting there for ages with a "rotating" round image and "Uploading File" so I don't think it'll appear - grateful for suggestions as to how to post the photo). Anyway the plug is 35mm long with a 28mm diameter head and three ridges to lock in somewhere. I can't see a similar plug anywhere but would like to put it back in place, so any idea where it goes.
  7. To complete this, I have found that VW part 357 955 531 (has a white painted 99 on top) works in my RHD 2000 Boxster to provide a variable intermittent wipe dependent on how often the wipe is started. In a RHD car the relays are up to the right above the pedals.
  8. Thanks for the offers and info - since I'm in the UK it's probably not economically viable to import a Porsche changer. To clarify my choice of Sony. it's to add a DAB interface (just as soon as win one on Ebay....) as I like the digital radio in the UK. Plus when I load CDs they stay into until they've cycled round and then I change them. Yes a harddisk installation would be nice but then I can't have the Sony DAB unit. Can't have everything! I did like the double DIN installation of a Pioneer unit on here, but even though that's current it doesn't offer DAB :-(
  9. My car previously had a CD changer fitted (checking the option codes, it had a CD radio, CD changer and CD holders). At some point before my ownership the head unit has replaced with a Radio cassette and the CD changer removed. Looking at the connector under the front hood, the changer connection "looks" identical to a Sony one. I am planning to buy a Sony head unit and changer - is the cable identical to Sony's (I presume it is given other info that the Porsche unit is just a Sony with different softwrae)? If so it'll save me having to pull the wire through. In the meantime, is there any standard Sony CD changer that I can buy that would work with the Porsche head unit?
  10. Thanks - I found page 1 but didn't notice it had a second page - doh! Where is the relay located in the car - just found the relay tray in the rear boot mentioned in the vehicle handbook, but there is no click from there as the intermittent wipe operates. There is a click from somewhere in the passenger area so I'm guessing it's hidden behind a panel somewhere! PS - There are other VW intermittent wiper relays on Ebay at the moment but not the exact one mentioned. Anyone know if others are compatible? The ones I've found are 357 955 531 (No. 99 in white on it), 477 955 531, 191 955 531 Also a "universal" one at http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-AUDI-RENAULT-UNIV...7QQcmdZViewItem This site http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Wiper_Variable_intermittent suggests that the one with 99 on it should work. This site http://stason.org/TULARC/vehicles/vw-techn...-my-car-li.html suggests that the one marked 99 is the variable upgrade to the 191 955 531 above (which I think may not be variable). http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro/wiper.html backs this up, and implies 380 ... and 357 ... relays are interchangeable and provide the variable intermittent function 477 ... is used in a Porsche 924 but I've not found if it provides the variable intermittent function.
  11. Somewhere I read about the possibility to convert the standard fixed intermittent wiper to variable simply by swapping a relay for a VW/Audi (I think) part, but cannot now find the details. Can anyone point me to the details (not sure if it was on this site or elsewhere), or state the correct relay to buy and where to fit it.
