  1. I guess it may indeed be time to look for some new ideas. Tony Callas at Callas Rennsport was suggested. May be the next stop for me.
  2. Thanks for that link. I hope that's not what is truly going on? Can a bad master clutch cylinder produce the noise I describe? Of note, the car continues to perform well with no lag or particularly sticky gear shifts. I'm also able to make the noise go away sometimes when I play with the clutch pedal in neutral.
  3. I have been having trouble with a clutch issue involving a constant noise from the bell housing area. I have posted here before about this but all previous suggestions have been tried without success. I am attaching an audio recording of the noise, which comes on after the car warms up and is idling in neutral, and goes away when the clutch is depressed. This has been a frustrating process since I have so far spent more than $5000 on trying to fix this issue. The car runs great, but ignoring the noise in the past eventually led to a clutch failure. I have had the clutch kit, flywheel, and throwout bearings fixed about 3 times each by both the dealer and a well-reputed indy. Could this be an issue with the slave cylinder for the clutch? None of this is making any sense. 996 bellhousing noise 1.mp3
  4. check out Dutch Treat Porsche in Lawndale, near Manhattan Beach. Rob is honest and knows his stuff.
  5. The part number is 997.116.013.10. Wow! Is a 997 clutch disc compatible with a 996????? The pressure plate is 996.116.027.06. Does anyone know if it is normal to mix the 2 parts? There was no damage to the input shaft. The new clutch and transmission perform beautifully without a peep.
  6. I didn't think of that. It looks like it's got a Porsche item number on it.
  7. I recently had a 3-time malfunctioning clutch that was misdiagnosed. I switched mechanics after the rattling clutch gave out on me after about 1 year of driving with the noise. The tapping or rattling noise was present when the car was idling and it would wax and wane (not there when car was cold for the first start of the day). I was fed up with the Porsche dealer who I originally went to for the clutch repair but the noises kept coming back. They were clearly over their heads and skill level. They supposedly replaced the clutch kit and flywheel twice. A new clutch has now gone in again with my new mechanic, and the car is running fine now without unusual noises. Check out these photos. Has anyone seen anything like this? The central splines of the clutch disc that fit along the main shaft have completely sheared off. Car has never been tracked or abused. Any thoughts? By the way, this is off a 2002 C2 at 43K miles.
  8. It turns out that the squeaking sound was from the bellhousing. There was a rattling noise that started to become more and more noticeable when idling, which went away along with any squeaking when the clutch was depressed. The dealer ended up doing the fix. The cause was a bad dual mass flywheel. The cost........$3300!!!! :o I changed out the RMS while in there. My car is an MY02 996 Carrera 2 with 31,000 miles. Other than not having driven it for about a year while I was abroad, the car has mainly seen action on the weekends. It's only when I made it my daily driver last year that troubles began.
  9. I'm not completely sure if the noise is coming from the bellhousing. When I open the engine lid, it sounds like it's coming from somewhere deep within the car (possibly the bellhousing). The sound is very much like a bad belt but it does not appear to be coming from the belts that are visible when the engine lid is open. Someone once mentioned something about faulty hydraulic lifters being the source of a noise that sounds similar to the squeaking that I'm referring to. I'm not terribly tech savvy, but what are the "lifters" and how important is it to get these replaced? Thanks for all the troubleshooting thus far.
  10. I think you're right about that, given previous posts on this topic. Is there anything wrong with leaving this noise alone or should it be addressed? I guess that would be the real question. Thanks for the input.
  11. I'm new to this forum, but have had my 2002 Carrera 2 Cab for 6 years now. I have been searching the 996 forum on this site at length about various squeaking noises coming from the engine, but I have not found anything conclusive as to the origin of the noise that I'm hearing. So, I apologize if this post seems redundant to some of you. I began noticing a squeaking noise coming from the engine about one month ago. The noise seems to occur at idle or while coasting to a stop in gear. Also, if I'm in neutral and stepping on the gas, the noise will increase with the throttle. It goes away when the clutch is depressed or when I'm accelerating. The noise will be there regardless of whether or not the engine has warmed up. It seems to come from the engine and not the bell housing. It doesn't seem to affect the car's performance but I would like to know what it is and if I can get rid of it. My car has almost 30K miles on it and has had some RMS/IMS problems in the past. These issues were resolved long ago (knock on wood). Any help would be appreciated.
