  1. If I understand what you're asking, the on the Wheel Enhancement site, the difference between caps in the first and second picture appears to be wether the crest is plastic or metal. I called Wheel Enhancement and spoke to a gentleman named John. He had me send a picture of one of my caps (still on the wheel, very much like your pic) to john@wheelenhancement.com with a description of the cap (metal, not painted, no part number on cap) and he responded with an identification of the part and a price ($45 dollars for mine). You may want to do the same. Good luck! - Pete
  2. I just lost a wheel cap also. LVDell and Loren sent me a couple of sites that have a good selection of replacement caps. I'm guessing they're cheaper than a dealer . . . Wheel Enhancement definitely has a match for the one you need. The links: www.tweeks.com Wheel Enhancement I hope this helps. - Pete
  3. Hey Dell - disregard my question about the status of the cap in your photo - I now realize that it is one of the ones on the site you directed me too. Thanks. - Pete
  4. Thanks guys - you've given me quite a few options (not to mention to websites I didn't know about that I can rummage around on for all kinds of cool things). Dell - The one in your photo looks pretty darn close to what I have - my photo was taken with my cell phone, so it isn't as clear as it might be. I went back out and pulled off all three remaining caps, and while none of them have a part number, one of them has a paper sticker in it that says 'Made in Italy', so I'm guessing they're aftermarket. Unfortunately, I don't have the original sticker, so I can't see if they came with the car. Is the one in your photo in service, or is it only available photographically? :D I noticed on one of the sites that most of the caps are 60mm, but some are 70mm. Is 60mm the size for standard wheels? Mine are 17 inch twist pattern (I think that's what it is called) if that makes a difference. Again, thanks for the help. - Pete
  5. There was no part number on the back of the part - This struck me as odd, because even the little plastic cap that covers the nut on the windshield wiper has a part number on it. Below is a picture of the cap. Thanks. - Pete
  6. I recently lost one of the unpainted metal wheel caps with the recessed Porsche crest on my MY98 986. I called the dealer for a replacement, and was told it was $19.85. I ordered it, but the part that came in was plastic. It is concave, and has the recessed Porsche crest with black paint on the appropriate places. Really looks like a piece of crap. I told the dealer it didn't match the other three that I have. He did some research, and told me that this part supersedes the old part, which is no longer available. If this is true, I have three choices: 1. Pay $80 to downgrade all four wheels to a plastic part that looks like crap 2. Live with a missing wheel cap 3. Hunt for a used one Does the story I'm getting from the dealer make sense? Sounds kind of bogus to me. The part #s he gave me are: Original part: 993.361.303.05.61M New part: 993.361.303.11.9A1 If these really are my choices, does anyone have one of the old ones lying around for sale? Maybe someone who upgraded to the painted wheel caps? Thanks. - Pete
  7. Thanks Toolpants - as always, you impress me with both your knowledge and speed. - Pete
  8. I had to relocate my headunit a while back, which required me to reroute the harness and antenna cable. After I finished, my FM reception was extremely poor - very few stations, fade in and out as I drive, and lots of static. FM reception was fine before relocating the headunit. When I disconnect the antenna cable from the headunit, reception does not change; this causes me to believe that the antenna cable has been damaged or become disconnected. I can see from other posts that the FM antenna is in the windshield. Does the antenna cable from the headunit run to a connection point near the windshield? Can anyone tell me where the connection point is, and maybe how to get to it? Thanks in advance. - Pete
  9. I just recently used the Eastwood windshield repair kit to get a BADLY scratched windshield (on a Chrysler Cirrus) through MD state inspection. It worked as advertised, but took a ton of elbow grease. There are 2 levels of product - one for deep scratches (catches the fingernail) and one for superficial scratches. I used the latter, and all of the superficial scratches polished out. The deeper scratches remained, but improved. - Pete
  10. Joe - Sorry it so long to get back to you, I was travelling. I haven't investigated any further - I'm looking at this as an early summer project in case it takes a while (my garage isn't heated). I'll keep you posted, and would appreciate it if you do likewise if you find anything. Thanks. - Pete
  11. In several of the threads about replacing a 4 spoke steering wheel with a 3 spoke steering wheel, I've seen references about the replacements not coming with the airbag. This may be a really dumb question, but are those references to the airbag cover, or the actual airbag? Is the actual airbag different in a 3 and 4 spoke wheel? This is an upgrade I'd really like to make, but I'd rather not have the nagging worry about a 'replacement' airbag . . . if it's just the airbag cover, it's another story. I'm not worried about the removal/replacement process for the airbag - it's the idea of having one with an unknown history that makes me uncomfortable. Thanks - as always, I appreciate the insight. - Pete
  12. I was of the impression that automatic car washes were taboo for Boxsters, due to the water pressure which tends to find openings (particularly around the top) that weren't intended for moisture. Are they in fact safe?
  13. When I shut my ignition off, the headlights dim but remain on. As far as I can tell, the don't auto-shut off after that - I've waited a while, and they seem to remain on. I assume this is standard behavior. What is the purpose of this feature? I'd prefer to have them go off completely, or else have the dimmed lights 'time out'. Am I just not waiting long enough? Thanks. - Pete
  14. Thanks for the lucid reply. I have a trickle charger that I seldom use; I guess I was reading these posts and confusing a float charger with a trickle charger. Thanks again. - Pete
  15. You mean, to charge the sun?? Doesn't that bad boy stay charged on it's own? Sorry, just goofing. Wingless - I see you are from RI - whereabouts? (probably better to reply in email so as not to corrupt the thread). I lived there for my first 30 years. In fact, I bought my MY98 from someone in New Hampshire while visiting my parents in Chepachet. Sorry for threadjacking. We now rejoin our original topic, already in progress. I've been wondering about trickle chargers for a while. Apparently a lot of folks here have them - do they monitor the charge of the battery to avoid overcharging? - Pete
  16. Thanks for the reply, Toolpants. I've emailed the seller asking about the model these panels came out of, as well as for more info on the cut-outs. I corrected the link above, but here it is a again if anyone wants to go to it: (Porsche leather door panels left and right Item number: 7956410896 ) Thanks. - Pete
  17. The door panels pictured below are listed on ebay (Porsche leather door panels left and right Item number: 7956410896 ) The description says: These are stiched leather door panels and will fit any year Boxster from 1997 to 2004 and 911 form 1998 to 2004 the panels will fit on Boxsters after some trim pieces are changed because the door handles come up different, one of the panels will need to be pulled apart by the inside pull handle and the rear behind the airbag cover to reglue the leather but there are no rips or tears the armrests are also leather and included I'm wondering about a couple of things: 1) What are these panels off of? They look like the panels on my Boxster, but the description says the trim would have to be switched to fit a Boxster. 2) Is it simply a trim switch to make these panels fit a Boxster? 3) Has anyone done the type of leather repair the left one will need, and if so, is it DIY friendly? 4) The speaker cut-outs appear larger the speaker cut-outs in my stock panels. Does this look like a standard cut-out for which a can get the appropriate grilles? The auction ends in 8 hours, and there are currently no bids. I'm wondering if I'm missing something that everyone else has seen . . . Thanks. - Pete
  18. I'm looking at 4 days: Saturday, March 5, start at 12:00 Sunday, March 6, start at 12:30 Saturday, March 12, start at 12:00 Sunday, March 13, start at 12:30 Preferences?
  19. I know it sounds crazy. I ended up with black leather dashboard with perfect condition (don't ask me why bought it) and now I want to have 2 tone leather interior. Mine is Boxster Red as yours. Better forget about it? Here is my quick Photoshop draft anyway. http://www.pcars.us/albums/4043.jpg <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Are you putting the black IN, or taking it OUT ? I ask, because I was wondering how difficult it would be to replace my cheap looking black 'plastic-substitute' dash with a black leather dash. I haven't seen any Black leather dashs floating around on ebay, so if your getting rid of the black one, I may be interested in it. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the one? Thanks. - Pete
  20. Well, I can wait until about mid March if you're willing to make the drive. From where I am, I can reach Ft. Monmouth in about 3 hours, The GW Bridge in about 4 hours, The Delaware Memorial Bridge in about 2 hours, and Philly in about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Food for thought . . . .
  21. I was going to try to lure you out here by sending you post cards with palm trees and sandy beaches - but I see you've got the real pictures . . . B) As Steven Wright says, "it's a small world . . . but I wouldn't want to paint it."
  22. I live Maryland, about 30 minutes west of Baltimore. I'm going to be doing a 45k maintenance on my base '98 in March. Is anyone else interested in having a work-on-cars day for similar types of service? BobMarley has already expressed interest in doing his brakes - any other local interest? BTW - BobMarley has suggested calling it stnaplooT day - kind of a dyslexic homage to the west coast work-on-cars day guru. I'm looking at weekends in March. Post or email me with preferred dates if you are interested. Thanks. - Pete
  23. Cool - look at your calendar for March, and see if a particular weekend looks good to you. I'll create a new post for this item so as not to 'hijack' the original post. Love the name.
  24. Hey Ric - Where in MD are you? I live in Woodbine (about 30 min west of Baltimore along route 70, just east of Mt. Airy). I've been considering this hack for my '98, but haven't gotten to it yet. While I'm no mechanical genius, I've rebuilt a few (non-Porsche) engines, and I have a couple of tools and a garage. I wouldn't mind giving you a hand if you're not afraid to try it - the posted directions seem pretty straight forward. Feel free to email me or reply here. BTW - I'm planning on doing a 45k service in the next month or so, and was going to see if I could find some other local owners that were interested in doing the same. Kind of a 'Work on Cars Day, East Coast Edition' (I hope Toolpants will forgive the shameful plagiarism). Let me know if either interests you. Thanks. - Pete
  25. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=1512 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Can one of you guys who have done this post the disassembly steps? I don't want to tax Loren's generosity by adding to the list of times he is asked to send them out . . . . I'm betting there are several of us that have been unable to figure out this first step. Thanks. - Pete <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Loren - Thanks for the R&R - I got it this morning. I appreciate it. - Pete
