  1. porsche had a problem with chain tensioners in the sc's and earlier cars. I dont think the company took any particular steps to advise buyers about the issue. I think it was in '84 or 85 when the hydraulic tensioners came out, and most sc owners put them on, replacing the sealed unit tensioners. the hydraulic tensioners went on my car at 95k. main bearing issue necessitated a tear-down and rebuild at 160k. When I sold the car at 325k the engine was running strong. hope my c4s will do the same.... point is that there are problems with all makes, models, that hopefully get ironed out over time.
  2. I use a government surplus GPL-693-a Mk2 levitator that I picked up at an auction in Nevada. It was designed for 400Hz power for moving aircraft around, but I re-wired it up to run on the cigarette lighter plug. It is great for holding up the car when I do work on it. right. I had one of these too. Needed a step ladder to get out and back into the car. the cigarette lighter cord wasn't long enough. (ps: that color is still pretty cool, pal. Happy Christmas !)
  3. oil pressure relief valve. I had that same question about a year ago. and, for anyone that's wondering, Orient X is telekinetic and can make his car float. literally. didn't everyone know that?

Happy Christmas to all, esp those who see this on Christmas eve. this is just for a laugh, adding to stories of temp repairs with duct tape, etc. Not being particularly mechanical, and afraid of attempting the excellent diy info put together by Loren, and appreciating the sound prophylactic advice from Tanny, and generally sharing his philosophy of advance problem prevention, I resorted to cutting a coat hanger, making a temp/emergency puller, and stashing it in the door pocket. I did a few odd repairs on my old '79, but I'm just scared to do too much to the 996. I think both the car and I are oversensitive types. Ok, stop laughing now. "Ho ho ho" to all, and.... cheers,
  5. Brian, you just may need to open your own shop to do these conversions. I'm going to share this whole thing with my very good Porsche inde in Fort Bragg at Renzi Auto, and I'm betting he will be amazed. I actually wouldn't be surprised if you knew him. I'm looking forward to seeing your car up here sometime next year. jl
  6. Noticed today that the gas filler door puller that sits inside the right front door frame was broken off and laying on the bottom of the frame. Long thin plastic line was also broken off apparently at both ends. No idea when this might have happened. On older 911's if the cable release broke the trick was to open the filler door with a length of strong test thick fishing line. Has anyone ever replaced this emergency line? If so, advice would be appreciated. Surely it can be done without taking the body of the car apart. Part # information would also be appreciated. It's amazing to me that this plastic pull ring and attached plastic line are just so cheap. I'm surprized not to find this situation addressed in the DIY forum, but I'll double check over there just to be sure. good holidays, happy Christmas, to all...
  7. I had a similar issue. HIgh pitch squeel coming from rear end somewhere. Idler pulley near alternator needed replacement. easy fix. good luck.
  8. sounds more like the transmission than the engine. I would think there would be more sound on acceleration if a bearing was broken in the engine, or, the engine would not operate. Maybe there is also the whining sound when accelerate, just the engine sound covered the whining sound, so I could not hear it? if it was a bearing it would be a grinding, grating, type sound. I think a whine is more likely in the trans.
  9. might be worth a call to Jeff or one of the guys at Sunset Porsche in Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Surely quicker delivery than ordering from Germany via dealer. No idea re shipping cost from USA, but likely cheaper as well. worth a phone call to find out...... what's the time difference? about 8 hours or so? actually not too bad for an early morning call from NZ.   11. are you putting in a center radiator to improve the cooling, esp if the car is going to be tracked? my guess would be that the v8 will actually be easier to cool properly than the boxster-6. and, all purism notwithstanding, and a possible apology in advance to Loren, how about a pic of your hot '69 Camaro too? Arrow indicating coolant level seems about right to me. better to be closer to the minimum level, I think, to prevent overflowing. also, I was recently advised to upgrade the coolant cap to the one ending in 04. Cost was about $30 from Sunset Porsche. New cap arrived about 2 days after ordering by phone.
  13. please dont take my earlier joking as anyway being a putdown of this engineering feat. Only joking about the names for the car, for sure not about the accomplishment. I would never have thought this was possible. So, Brian, what's the weight ratio of the combo, horsepower, etc. Maurice is right, no ims concerns. and from what I've read the small block LS1 is very reliable. I'm not a purist, I've had a '62 chevy with a 283 v8, and a '68 Camaro with a strong 327cu. Always been a Porsche guy at heart, since I was a kid, but couldn't get into one until my '79 SC. It's amazing to see a small Chevy block fit in there. and I'm curious to know about the efficiency of the cooling, along with the projected hp, torque, etc. and I think the name PorVette is cute, surely not meant as derogatory. If taken that way, kindly accept my apologies. and let me know when you drive it up to Mendocino. jl

  15. Thank you geoff but Cig. lighter is dead(the fuse is ok). I did a check and could not find a problem w/the lighter. I will tackle that lighter in the Spring. Question still is, can I connect it to the recommended jumper ports? If the lighter socket doesnt work, dont take the chance of connecting via the jumper ports. I would think its best to connect directly to the battery.

  17. you might consider purchasing a Durametric code reader.... very helpful in many ways, including clearing codes/lights. jl
  18. here are two possibly too simple questions that occurred to me: when the problems started was the coolant tank too full? and, has the coolant been cut with water? whats the coolant/water ratio? If there's water in there, could the water be overheating and causing the leak? Just a thought.... stay with it.... good luck.
  19. kcs: Since your coolant cap ends in "01", definitely start by replacing the coolant cap. Since you have gotten a CEL, go to any auto chain store and have the code(s) read and post them here. If the CEL starts flashing, don't drive it as at a minimum, you may damage your catalytic converters. The "steam" that you see may just be coolant leaking onto the exhaust, but you have to pinpoint the cause of the leak. Eliminate the coolant cap from the equation and go from there. Regards, Maurice. Maurice, I thought the .01 was the latest cap until I read your post. the .01 is blue. I've just ordered a .04 from Sunset, on general principles, but wonder what the problem is with the .01? I thought the .01 fixed the seal/pressure problem.. Cheers, jl

  21. cables look like they work with the seat motors to control auto seat adjustment, and possibly headed seat connectors. the computer is under the drivers seat, and if any crucial cables were not properly attached I would think the car would neither start nor run. You'll to check carefully with a wiring guide diagram I think. good luck
  22. I dont think this would be a water pump issue. Likely its the cap, hopefully not the tank. stay in touch....
