  1. Hi all, does anyone happen to know if the numbers on the gear console on a triptronic should be illuminated at night. Mine aren't but in every other automatic I have driven they do. TIA
  2. Is it a tick or a tap, injectors can tick, nothing to worry about, lifters or tappets (uk) tap, sometimes oil drains out of them and it can take a while for them to fill up again particularly if its been standing a while. Try a good long run, then listen, as they are hydraulic there should be no noise when warm, having said that a little noise is acceptable.
  3. Nice job, IMHO its better with your top off.
  4. By sniffing the coolant I ment sucking some gases from the expansion tank into a pipette which has an indicator in it which can detect exhaust fumes, your garage should have one. Cleaning the Maff should be a relatively easy job so I'm told. Jensen Healeys used to leak petrol directly into the sump, the oil became very thin and wreaked of petrol, the level went up on the dip stick.
  5. I think you need to do a compression test. The amount of fuel you seem to be talking about would surely cause some black smoke if it was being burnt incorrectly. So some must not be being burnt if it is getting into the oil. So are you relying on smell to detect the gas in the oil? can you be absolutely sure there is gas in the oil? or is it possibly exhaust fumes? Have they done a sniff test on the coolent.
  6. Are there any warning lights on when its running, anything unusual prior to this happening. How does it run now?
  7. Doubt it would turn over if it was hydraulically locked, Christ the car is only 4 years old can it be AOS so soon? I had a BM once did a similar thing, left it for 12 hours came back and started an ran without any further trouble, hope you are as lucky. I would take Lorens advice, look for the simple things first, get the codes read. How many miles does it have?
  8. How does it run, any CELs. A faulty control pressure regulator would lead to either very lean or very rich running, any black smoke? a stuck inject would also tend to a rich mixture. I would check the plugs and maybe give it an oil change. How is the oil level, up or down.
  9. During the summer, if you can remember it, I parked my car with top down, came back later to get somthing and as soon as I reached in the alarm went off. I don't have a red clip thingy, why do some cars need them? obviously alarm sensors not disabled with top down. It says in the manual to keep the lenses clean. Re summer, crap here in the UK
  10. Well mine blinks with 2 bars, always has done and there doesn't seem to be any fault, everything works as normal eg alarm and warning if boot or bonnet open.
  11. Look for the simple things first. IMS failure would mean it wouldn't run, and is usually accompanied by noises and Mobil 1 on the floor. You say it ran fine on the way home, does it still run? Check the battery and the batery terminals, are the lights working normally with engine off, this would give you an indication of the state of the battery, then start to look else where. Lower oil level is probaly due to the fact that after turning the engine over the oil has pumped around the engine and so there is less to measure, particularly if its cold.
  12. Doesn't look dirty enough to have been a drain plug, exposed to all the elements under the car, what would cause a grommet to randomly come out? as Tool pants said, it is from the car right?
  13. A parafin like smell would seem to me to be oil and not coolant, I'd be looking at investigating the AOS, if its really bad there could be a lot of oil about in cylinders and air intake, so probably a good idea to remove the plugs and see and do a compression test at the same time.
  14. I don;t know what anyone else thinks but I would have thought this unlikely. This basically regulates the pressure in the fuel system, if too little pressure it is unlikely to run, too much and it would run rich, this doesn't explain your white smoke.
  15. I don;t know what anyone else thinks but I would have thought this unlikely. This basically reulates the pressure in the fuel system, if too little pressure it is unlikely to run, too much and it would run rich, this doesn't explain your white smoke.
  16. Scorch marks? what kind of battery are you using??
  17. Hi, had this problem on the wifes car, taking the fob apart and cleaning under the rubber buttons fixed it. Not sure if this can be done on the Boxster fob though.
  18. Thanks Richard, seems an interesting idea.........I'm going towatch that space!
  19. Leaking gaskets often cause a misfire on start up as coolent is forced into the cylinders when the engine is not running by the pressure in the cooling system, I expect this could also be the case with a liner. What does it start like?
  20. Any mayonnaise in the expansion tank or on the dip stick? Have a smell of the expansion tank with the cap off and engine running or better still you can buy what looks like a large pipette filled with an indicator you suck gas from the expension tank, it tells you if you have any exhaust gases leaking into the coolant and therefore a head gasket failure. How much of a blast did you give it after doing the AOS?
  21. As I pointed out in an earlier post its not possible to have different pressures on the pistons. OK yes pistons can seize but not in this case. Do you think calipers can warp? or do you mean discs? How do you account both discs needing replacement, and the corrosion in the same place on each disc. This would mean there would have to be an identical problem on each caliper on each pair of pistons on all the cars that do this, seems unlikely. When I was working for a garage back in the 70's we never saw this problem.
  22. Hi Westcoaster, well I've noticed this problem crop up a number of times on the various Boxster sites, can't remember if they were UK based though. I have seen the same problem on other cars, I recently replaced the rotors (both fronts) on my daughters Renault Clio it had a similar wear pattern, they have a single piston floating caliper set up so less likely to be related to sticking pistons. Perhaps it is due to our climate coupled with the amount of salt they put on the roads in winter. No mention on the Bremo site of this being specific to particular makes of car. They did show pictures of damage resulting from mis-aligned calipers but thats not the case here. I'm fairly sure its due to corrosion, though how and why I'm not sure. I'm thinking that some kind of pitting in the disc surface starts the process off, these pits gradually getting bigger as time goes on until large areas of corrosion appear, who knows. Thanks for the imput.
  23. Yes air is compressable thats my point, check out Boyle's Law, the pressure acting on a bubble of air in the system will cause a universal change in pressure as it is compressed, you simply cant get more pressure in one area. Anyway, I've just looked at the Brembo brakes site, they show pictures of worn discs like mine, they call it 'Vitrification' apparently caused by corrosion, how it happens on so many Boxsters on the inside of the discs....I don't know.
  24. Nothing broken or misaligned, as I said how would you get the same pattern of wear on both rear discs otherwise, and it seems its quite a common Boxster issue. As for bleeding and air bubbles, check your physics, there is no way more pressure can be generated on one piston unless of course its siezed, and as I said mine aren't. Thats interesting Toolpants, same type of wear as mine.
