  1. Here are two links that describe the front motor mount process in detail. Sounds like it's straight forward but a pain in the rear. PPBB web site http://www.ppbb.com/boards/ppbbphp/showfla...rue#Post1106222 Pedro's garage http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site%203/Insta...ne%20Mount.html There are also lots of posts on this board if you search. There were some comments about replacing the mount on wheel ramps could through off your alignment and you are supposed to use a lift or car jacks instead. Not sure if this is true. After researching it a little, I decided to get the dealer or an independent to do it. That's my next "investment" later this summer.
  2. Thanks. I think my next move is to replace the front engine mount and perhaps the trans mounts but I will need to find a good independent mechanic around here since the dealer wants a ridiculous amount for labour. Although the DIY doesn't sound too difficult, time is a problem these days.
  3. Thanks. I think my next step will be to replace the front engine mount. I have a local mechanic that does Porsche work that might make this a reasonably priced fix. Perhaps the clutch fluid bleed idea at the same time is a good idea as well. Another question. The dealer service rep mentioned that the Boxster mounts are hydraulic and should not need replacing. They look plain rubber to me. Is he confused with other models?
  4. I have found it progessively harder to shift since I bought my 2002 Boxster (no jokes here please, well maybe some for levity). Mainly from 1st to 2nd it seems to get hung up (stuck) briefly as I pass through the center. Holding it there with light pressure for a split second, it then goes nicely into 2nd. Doesn't always happen, sometimes it shifts very smoothly. There is no grinding and it doesn't seem to be related to RPM. It's worse when it's cold but still there when it's warm. It occurred before I installed my Porsche short shifter and still does after. It's an annoyance more than problem. So last visit to the dealership, I asked them to look at it again. They described the feeling as "notchy". They lubricated the linkage and it was great when I picked it up and for a few days later. Since then it has gone back to as it was. Any thoughts? I am thinking it is the linkage based upon that. Would replacing the linkage help? Any similar experiences? I also asked them about replacing the front engine mount, since I have 75K km on the car (50K miles). They said it didn't need it. Is this the type of "shifting problems" people have seen with a worn front engine mount? By the way, also got a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport's and a four wheel alignment done. It sure is nice to have new tires. Handles much nicer, quieter, great in the rain etc etc.
  5. Well, I guess it was worth a try. Good luck!
  6. Maybe too simple of a comment but it's not the air deflector is it? When my deflector rises at about 125 km/h, which is about 80 mph, I get a vibration from the rear driver's side. If I retract the deflector using the switch, the vibration goes away. I wouldn't recommend driving at that speed without the deflector but worth trying once to see if that is the vibration.
  7. Was looking for good Blue Boxster pictures on the web and came across this Box for sale in Quebec, Canada. Must be owned by a strong, angry man.
  8. Thanks Mike. In Canada I am getting mixed signals about the Pilot Sport (not PS2). The Michelin.ca web site still lists them as an option for Boxsters. I ordered these from the dealer last week and they say that they have arrived from Michelin. I'm not comitted to buying them but have a booking for 2 weeks from now to have them installed. They insist these are Pilot Sport not PS2. Just trying to understand opinions on the difference between PS and Ribs (and PS2 for that matter).
  9. How would you compare the Michelin Pilot Sports to the Pilot Sport Ribs? I'm looking for a good all around tire, good performance but mainly fun street driving.
  10. I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I assume your 99 is the same as my 02. There is a terminal in the fuse box that pulls out. You attach the positive clamp on jumper cables to the terminal and the negative to a ground on the car (if I remember correctly). Other end of hte jumper cables goes to a live battery (in the proper order). This puts enough power into the system to unlatch the trunks etc. It's covered in the manual, so read the manual or download a copy if it's in the locked trunk and I'm sure on the board somewhere. Worked very easily for me. Sorry just reading some of the other threads, the post in the fuse box didn't come out until 2001 model year. Guess you can't do that.
  11. Since I bought it last year, my 2002 has never had a smooth shift, especially between 1st and 2nd. It seems to get hung up briefly as it crosses the half way point. It's not as bad between other gears. I had the short shifter installed last year and it made no difference. I realize the short shifter has some issue when cold but this is not a cold issue, it happened before the short shifter and even after the car is warmed up with the short shifter. I'm bringing it to have it looked at in a week but when I booked the appointment the service tech said it sounds to him like a worn linkage. Anyone else have a similar problem that was fixed by replacing the shifter linkage?
  12. I'm looking for a good location to plan a drive / ride to for Sunday morning breakfast for a few friends. Something north east of Toronto, maybe about 60 - 90 minutes drive through some good winding country roads. Any place come to mind?
  13. ekam, Ok, what gives with the picture. You are down in your profile as Male but the picture doesn't look too male to me! And the pictures you linked to are taken on the roof of the parking garage next to where I used work!
  14. Oh yeah! The word "dinged" comes to mind. I bought two things: 986DoorSills (the ones pictured in this chain) for $99.95 and the Centre Console Storage Shelf for $29.95. This cost me 151.01 USD from Suncoast which my credit card converted and charged me $166.31 CAN. The Canadian dollar was still high at the time I guess. Then UPS billed me $59.09 CAN for "Import Charges". So it's not Suncoast's fault but I don't believe it's much cheaper to buy from Suncoast than one of the local Porsche dealers. I went to Downtown Porsche in Toronto and was so put off by the attitude of the parts guy that I decided to try Suncoast. I was told by the Parts guy that he would not sell me these door sills, since they were meant for a 987 and it would ruin the authenticity of my Porsche 986. What an arrogant statement. Makes we mant to buy a GM !!! (well not really). :P
  15. The Service History can be hard to get from the dealership. I visited the dealership that took care of my car before I got it. They verified single owner and that it was serviced by them but would not provide the details due to privacy concerns. They said if I can get a letter from the original owner allowing me to see the service history, they would be happy to provide it. However they also would not give me the previous owner's name, same privacy concern. Probably depends upon the dealer you visit though.
  16. Thanks for the advice. The car is plugged in now for the rest of the winter. Only a few more weeks. It is supposed to hit 55 F tomorrow in the Toronto area and will rain all weekend. Hopefuly that washes away all the snow and salt on roads to make for good spring driving soon.
  17. Do you leave your maintainer attached for the winter or do you use it just periodically? Just bought a brand new battery and a battery maintainer (Canadian Tire brand) but I'm still nervous to leave it attached even for the rest of the winter. The maintainer cycles on and off a few times an hour judging by the lights, do you see similar with your maintainers? Any comments on the cigarette lighter adaptor with the maintainer and a Boxster?
  18. I wouldn't worry as much about the model year but more about the individual Boxster you find. Have a credible Pre Purchase Inspection from someone not related to the seller. No matter what model year you get though, they are expensive to repair (especially in Canada) no matter what the problem but they sure are fun to drive. I would agree with Loren about finding a post 2000 model if you can afford that. A few annoyances that can't be easily retrofited: no glove box on my 2002, I think that started in 2003; I wish I bought an S for the added HP; plastic rear window on my 2002, I think glass started in 2003(?).
  19. Re "soopster, I think if you looks around, you can get Carrera lightweights (replicas) for less than than that (made in Italy)." Remember the vendor is Canadian, so it's $CAN. I think the price is slightly high but I would need to add 20% $ conversion, higher shipping and import duty/customs fees if I ordered from the US. The joys of living in Canada .... I will take a look at Wheel Dynamics though. Thanks.
  20. Thanks, I will watch for that when I install them in a few weeks. I'm getting anxious for good weather. Tried to start the Boxster last weekend and no luck, the battery was dead in spite of running it every few weeks but I think my battery is original so to be expected I guess. I bought a good cheap battery maintainer this week from Canadian Tire ($49.99 CAN) which charged it but it won't hold a charge longer than 24 hours. I'm off to Pfaff tomorrow at lunch to buy a new battery ... just in case it gets nice soon.
  21. Wow there are other Toronto folk suffering through a great winter for Boxsters ... :) I bought the same door sills from Suncoast in the fall but never got around to installing them before it got cold. I'm waiting until it warms up a bit. What is the gap? I hadn't read about that.
  22. Ok, I'm on to another option. An online store out of Canada offers these wheels which are duplicates of the Porsche 5 spoke wheels. They say they are made with the correct offset and would be a perfect fit for 2002 Boxster without spacers. Fronts 18 x 8, offset 50, 225/40R18 tires Rears 18 x 10, offset 47, 265/35R18 tires Any thoughts on this option? Here is their web site with the page for these wheels: http://www.carmodifier.com/default.asp?Act...mp;wheelID=1316
  23. Thanks for the replies. I'm too nervous about the 10 inch rears that they will fit properly, so I think I'm going to pass on these rims. I had been on 1010tires.com before but didn't find that calculator. That's a great tool. Shows me that I would be adding quite a bit of width to the rear. Has anyone noticed that Goodyear doesn't seem to make 17 inch G3 DS tires anymore that fit the boxster? I've been on Tire Rack and Goodyear's site and can't find those tires anymore. Looks like I will stick with the Michelin PS tires instead.
  24. I am looking at a used set of original Porsche wheels for my 2002 Boxster. They are the 5 spoke 18 inch porsche wheels. They are 18 x 8 offset 37 on the front and 18 x 10 offset 58 on the rear. Does anyone have the same wheels on their Boxster? Any rubbing on the inside or the outside? Would I need spacers? I spoke with Parts at the Porsche dealer and he said it will be tight on the rear since the Boxster S came with 18 x 9 only. He said he's not sure whether it will rub or not and not sure if it does rub whether spacers would help.
  25. I believe it's law in some States to have automatic head lights (but I'm not sure being Canadian and having metric headlights :P ). I know in 2006 when I started to travel to Texas again for work, all of the rentals had automatic headlights and the rental company told me it was now law for new cars. Not sure when it started. Perhaps it is referencing that. The same rental cars in Canada don't have automatic lights, so would be a local modification for the car companies.
