  1. I am in the process of removing the engine from My 1997 Boxster 5 speed. I am doing it it my garage, car on jack stands, and have the following equipment: Floorjacks, small transmission jack, compressor and air tools, and a good mechanical background. Is it easier to remove the transmission first, or engine and transmission together? I realize that the engine will have to be supported after transmission is removed, but i will build a support similar to the Porsche one. Approximately how much does the tranny weigh?
  2. Will do my best. I have 2 days of Insurance left and it's away for the Winter and the fun can start...
  3. Make sure you check the sway bar links. I had a similar noise in mine and it was the sway bar links. Front and rear are the same link. It is easier to tell if they are shot when they are removed...They are easy to remove.
  4. Would love to...actually when I bought the car I planned on doing a swap. But the 2.5L runs so well....
  5. Unfortunetly no lift, but I do have jacks and stands etc. I also have a dry spot in my garage with a concrete floor.
  6. My 1997 986 will be taken off the road in a week or 2 for Winter,and I need to do some work on my engine. I need to replace the Variocam wear shoes that contact the timing chain on both banks and probably do both small timing chains while I am at it. I also need to replace the AOS as I think I have a vacuum leak. I will also replace all the bearings on the idler pulleys. I have already replaced the Bank 1 Variocam chain tensioner and resealed the cam cover on the passenger side without removing the engine. Is the drivers side harder to do? I really should visually onspect the clutch as I have no idea when it was replaced last and does not appear to be slipping. I would also replace the intermediate shaft bearing if I remove the engine...Car has about 106,000 miles and runs very good but has a slight rattle on start up. From what I have read it is probably the timing chain tensioners, 3 in total... I do all my own work, but have never removed the engine on a 986...is it hard to do? I think the work would be considerably easier with engine out of car.
  7. Ok, can they be rebuilt or do they need to be replaced? Part number(s) would be great if possible. I am taking my car off the road up here in November and will be working over the Winter on it...
  8. With A/C on high, I believe both fans should be on. Mine had a bad connection at the fuse...fuse was ok but fuse was loose in fusebox. Try wiggling the fuse with the A/C on high.
  9. By chain tensioners, do you mean the varia-cam tensioners? If so can they be rebuilt, or do they need to be replaced?
  10. Where can I buy a 986 Fender cover set for the rear fenders and rear trunk lid? Any idea of price? (Protects paint when working on car)

  12. My 1997 is the same color as yours...Arctic Silver with a red interior. I only plan on driving mine until mid October, then it will be garaged till April. I have a long winter to do list...I thought it was probably better to get it smogged before I laid it up for the winter...
  13. First time I have had my 1997 Boxster smogged...I get a CEL sometimes and it's always P1124...I need to remove the AOS and see if the bellows is torn. The guy driving it on the dyno needed a driving lesson...stalled it twice. Pay peanuts...get Monkeys...glad it is over. Good for 2 years.
  14. Pulled black box connection apart, wires and connectors are as new. Still have di-electric grease on them and no signs of moisture. With the drivers side door connection pulled apart the defrost light was still on. What's next?
  15. Thanks...I will check and report back. Why is the defrost switch attached to the doorlock circuit? Ground?

  17. Hey all, I am having trouble figuring out why my defrost light is on. My 1997 Boxster's defrost switch light comes on when the door locks operate to open the car. I have looked at the 97 schematic sheet 9 and their is a wire from the door locking module drivers side to the mirror heating. When I unlock the car the light goes on on my defrost switch. It stays on until after car has been locked again then it goes out, after some time. I guess the question is what is the connection between the door locking module and the defost? I have changed the defrost relay already. Thanks
  18. I rented an Ozone machine and left it in the car for 2 hours with top up and defrost fan on. Then aired car out for 2 hours and repeated. Smell is gone :) Cost $24.00 to rent machine for 24hours. Did my Daughters 4runner and my Lance Camper as well. Highly recomended.
  19. I replaced mine with the Porsche updated one. Bought from Sunset Porsche in Oregon. Part Number is 987 375 023 04 and I paid about $147.23 in April 09.. No problems and Sunset is great for parts.
  20. If you put the hubs in the freezer (overnight if possible) they will press in very easily. Same goes for the bearing into the Hub. Also works real well for balljoints on trucks and such.
  21. 1997 Boxster 5 speed I unfortunely hit a broken water access hole in the road while on a road trip. It punctured my tire and put a pencil lead hole in the rim. The rim and tire cannot be repaired. I am looking for a set of Porsche rims, Mine are 17" Chrome turbo twists. Most good used I am finding are 18". What is the major difference between 18 and 17? What offset would I need for my car without spacers? Thanks
