  1. My car is a US 1999 Boxster with 5-speed manual. The dealer replaced the convertible top with a new one several years after I bought the car. I want to get a headliner for the convertible top but I don't know if it will fit. Supposedly it only works with 2000+ MY convertible tops. So I want to - Determine the part number for my top (I don't see where it is printed on the top) - Determine which tops will accept a headliner to see if it will work
  2. FYI, The 987 Boxster has a bi-xenon headlights option.
  3. The Boxster heat shields _are_ prone to rattling. The bolts and clips that hold the heat shields on corrode over time, leaving the heat shields only partially attached. I have found that this is a common source of rattles. Also, (at least in the US) the Cats should still be under warranty even for the earliest Boxsters. They are covered for 10 years.
  4. Can you post pictures? I'm interested in seeing how it attaches. Thanks.
  5. There has been speculation that the temperature of the air going into the intake of a desnorked car is higher. That would explain a difference in MPG. And the difference would probably depend on the speed you are driving, how hot the outside air temp is, humidity, etc. But Kevin knew I was going to say that ;)
  6. There is also an updated coolant cap as the early ones tended to leak.
  7. Did you check the current flow across all of the fuses with an ammeter? This would tell you which circuit is causing the drain.
  8. It is probably the lower control arm bushings. There are two ways to verify this: (1) Have someone else push up and down on the corner of the car to reproduce the problem. While they are doing that, put your finger on the control arm near the bushing and see if you can feel it vibrating. (2) Nail the control arm bushing with some lubricant (non-silicone) and see if the problem temporarily goes away. This is a common problem. Unfortunately, you have to replace the control arm to fix it (there is no separate bushing for sale).
  9. I used compressed air with good results. A ton of junk came flying out the bottom of the drain. I was surprised at how much. A seat fuse that had blown frequently has been perfect since (for about 6 months now).
  10. It could be the lower control arm bushing. Try nailing it with a non-silicone lubricant and see if the problem temporarily goes away. If so, you have to replace the whole thing (and get an alignment) to fix it.
  11. Stop driving! It is the air/oil separator and if you keep driving you will hydrolock the engine. If you don't cause any further damage you should expect to spend about $130 for a new separator and a couple hours of labor. You can do it yourself but you can expect to spend some time wiggling parts on/off and dealing with a hard to get at clamp. I had the same problem. I also changed the spark plugs because they were fouled from burning oil. Even after changing the separator, there was smoke for hundreds of miles (getting less and less over time).
  12. If only you could connect it to the speed alert on the OBC, that would be very cool.
  13. Also, some people have put in the 3.4L 996 engine because it isn't _that_ much more expensive, all told.
  14. I bought Bosch Platinum+4 plugs for my 1999 Boxster and it specifically said _not_ to gap them, as they were already gapped. Besides, gapping a 4-electrode plug could be a nightmare.
  15. I think he is referring to on top of the roll bar in the middle (where the lexan windstop usually is).
  16. It is only a problem on really bumpy roads but it is annoying. I will investigate with this new information. Thanks a bunch!
  17. I think the guts of the CD changer are Sony too because they use the Sony Unilink protocol to communicate with the head unit.
  18. Which securing screws? The ones that hold the whole mechanism to the windshield frame? Yes, I've checked those. Are there other screws that might contribute to the stifness of that hinge? So if I just pull hard I should be able to get it apart? I did pull before but I got to a "it might break if this isn't how it's supposed to be taken apart" point and I backed off. I can try pulling harder.
  19. The red arrow shows the part that I am concerned about. The entire visor flaps up and down when I go over bumps so the problem for me is not the mirror hinge but the visor hinge. There is some sort of spring mechanism in there but I don't know how to get at it. If I could separate the two parts circled in green I think I could figure out how to fix the spring mechanism.
  20. I think the "boot ajar" light you are referring to is the spoiler speed sensor light. It goes on until the car senses movement. This is to ensure that the spoiler will go up at 75 mph (a safety issue). The "sensor illumination" light you are pointing out is the overrev indicator. It goes on when you rev the engine too high. It also goes on during the light test (when you turn on the ignition but don't start the car). Be happy that the digital speedometer is under the tachometer (which is correct for a MY99). That is a much better position for it. Many people complained when they moved it under the analog speedometer and I believe they eventually moved it back.
  21. There are separate fuses but he said that he checked the fuse. Unless he checked the wrong fuse, that's not the problem. Can you hear the motor straining?
  22. The problem in my car is not related to the mirror, but the big visor itself. It would happen even if I removed the mirrors. And the whole visor assembley is very expensive.
  23. Unfortunately for me, the passenger visor on my 1999 Boxster is flapping and the problem is the main hinge on the sun visor (not the mirror flap). There is no quick fix that I know of. (If you know of one, please let me know. I can't even figure out how to disconnect the hinge from the flap; they seem to be connected)
  24. ar38070's instructions match what I did. But I did mine over two years ago and haven't had any problems since then.
  25. For me it depends on what I'm getting. I typically use Froogle.google.com to find a good price then order from a place that has a low price and decent looking (doesn't looks like a fly-bynight, has address and phone number, etc.) website and policies.
