  1. I've driven my 01 Boxster S on several trips in excess of 600 miles one way. Other than the cramped interior quarters its not too bad. Stop and stretch more than you would normally. Biggest problem I had was the wife likes to take lots of crap. To accommodate this, take out and off the wind deflectors so you can use the space behind the roll bar with the top up. Also don't put anything that is affected by heat in the rear trunk. It gets too hot. Have fun and enjoys.
  2. Shop around and you can get it for less. Install instructions are found in the tech bulletins on this site. I like it.
  3. IN my opinion it is as a result of a stone chip. The clear coat is coming off. This happened on my Boxster's mirror. Be careful when washing with a presure hose. It can hit the chipped area and strip it off more. Not sure how to fix it best.
  4. My dad ran over a skunk once when he drove for Trailways Bus. The skunk got stuck between the rear duel wheels and spun around for miles. The smell was so bad almost everyone onboard got sick. He had to park the bus, call for a replacement and transfer all the folks and luggage. Funny now. They get hit here all the time in Montana. Hope you can get the smell out.
  5. I had this same prblem with my bug and 911. The grounds stap was the problem. Old and corroded it didn't make a good ground when hot.
  6. I think I'm going to get the Brey Krause camera mount for the Boxster S. Looks like it mounts between the roll bar arches (remove wind deflector).   8. Can someone make me a copy of the PCM1 Navigation disc for the Dakotas? It would be appreciated. I could trade you a CA/NV or a WA/OR/ID/MT/WY/UT/AZ/CO for the trouble. Thanks Dan
  9. My opinion is this. I have an 01 Boxster S, my third Porsche after 2 911s. It has been well maintained and is a great car. While the IMS is a known issue, I don't loose sleep over it. I figure there are several hundred thousand Boxsters out there and while you read about IMS horror stories on these boards, you don't hear from the majority who haven't had issues. Maintenance is the key to any car. People hate Land Rovers because they say they break all the time. My 01 Disco has been rock solid with absolutley no issues, but I take care of it. I also use it as it was intended in the hills. I also take the Boxster to autocrosses, DE Days, and long weekend trips. Both the Porsche and Land Rover are not garage queens. Bottom line is used cars are a crap shoot. Do your home work and buy the best you can afford. Drive it, and take care of it. The rest is pure luck regardless of whether its a Porsche or a Pontiac. That said, I wouldn't buy a used 99, 996. Too many other great Porsches out there for the same price point. Good Luck.
  10. Dennis you got the joke. Seriously I swear by the rear fog light. My 83 Euro SC originally came with it but it had been disconnected at some point and the light removed. I reconnected it and in the fog & rain it is a lifesaver. Both the Boxster S and My Land Rover Discovery have it. American cars need to get with it. Also on European cars the fogs only work in low beams, not on highs or by themselves. I don't think American cars are like that, but I could be wrong.
  11. For me here in Montana the major problem is guys in big, lifted pickups. Generally speaking the bigger the truck the bigger young clown driving it. Recently one of these guys tried to race my boss in his M3, my boss played with him until they got to the round-about where the M3 went through like a hot knife in butter and the truck ended up on the binders and into the flowers of the traffic circle. I would love to have seen that!

  15. I was thinking about putting a fire extinguisher in my Boxster. But then I started thinking if there was a fire, where would you spray it? It's not like you just open the hood a let loose. That made me think it becomes more of an onament than functional. What are your thoughts?

  17. I'm going to my first Porsche Club DE event this weekend. I'm going to be driving my 2001 Boxster S, with stock 18 inch Sport Design Wheels. What should I do about tire pressures? Use stock, recommended PSIs. Just curious on opinions.
  18. Unfortunately you maybe out of luck. I have a 2001 Boxster S with PCM1. I was missing the disc that covered my state. Last summer I ordered it from Navtech. At that time they said they had the discs, but they older ones weren't being updated. No worries, I just wanted a disc that worked. Now, not a year later Porsche and Navtech no longer have a relationship. Getting a replacement disc is near impossible for the older systems. There is Ebay, if you are lucky, or the discs will copy if you can find someone with the area you need. I keep the copy in my Boxster and the original at home. Do you have the disc for your location? If so that is a good thing since at least it will function. I use mine on trips and find that for freeway driving and most cities it works well for 8 year old technology. Its when you get into rural and new subdivisions that it runs out of gas. The best upgrade you can get is a new nav system like a Tom Tom, etc. Plus they are cheaper than the disc was! Wish there was a better answer. Dan

  21. Here's the full story: To all PCA webmasters and Presidents, The current pca.org hardware suffered a major failure Tuesday night (4/14) at 7:50pm CDT. We have spent several hours with vendor support and have come to the conclusion that the machine cannot be quickly repaired. As a result, pca.org and about 100 regions, zones, and Parade hosting are down. We already had a transition plan to move to new server hardware purchased last year. The equipment is configured and mostly ready to go, and will be the basis of our recovery plan. We have web site backups from Monday night and are restoring them now. These are huge and will take many hours just to copy. Database backups will be restored from Sunday night. We hope to have 95% of regions/zones/Parade back up within another 24 hours. A few will take longer but this should be a minimal problem overall. We do not plan to resurrect the original pca.org web site at this point. We are 99% finished with the new site and will bring it up ahead of plans; stay tuned for a club-wide email regarding your new login password for pca.org.
