  1. I am looking to purchase a 2001 911 3.4 6-speed manual in need of an engine. Can I tell by the VIN number if I need an engine with an electronic throttle or without an electronic throttle?
  2. Are the plastic coolant tubes only used in the V8's, or do the V6's have them also?
  3. Thanks for your detailed slide show. Are you planning on replacing your IMS bearing?
  4. Consumer Reports magazine really bashes the Cayenne in terms of reliability. I heard that the 2003 and 2004 models have issues, but they bash even the 2005 and newer models. Do you think it is a case of a limited production car and the disgruntled owners complain more? Am I correct that the ignition coils and the coolant tubes are the two worst problems on the 2005 and newer cars?
  5. I am looking to purchase a Cayenne S. Ideally I would like one with the aluminum coolant tubes. Is there any way to tell without removing the intake manifold? If they were changed at a Porsche dealer, would they be able to tell if I gave them the VIN number?
  6. The listing dropped off of eBay yesterday, so I called the dealer today. They replaced four of the eight ignition coils, and now the car is fine. Thanks for your help!
  7. Thanks for your prompt reply. It appears that the 2003 and 2004 Cayenne S had coil problems. Did the 2005 Cayenne S also have coil problems?
  8. I am looking at buying a 2005 Cayenne S with 108,000 miles. The V8 engine has a rough miss. Do you think that one or more of the platinum spark plugs have failed? If I bought a code reader, do you think the computer would have stored a code? It is a clean, one owner car so these may be highway miles.
  9. I found a 1999 Boxster with 36,000 miles and an engine making a knocking sound. I know a lot of 1999's had the sleeve slip problem. Is it possible to go 36,000 miles before the sleeve slips, or does this always happen sooner? If it is not the sleeve, do you think that it is the IMS bearing failure?
  10. If you have fire, it sounds like you need fuel. Do you know that the fuel pump is working and that the injectors are spraying fuel? If I turn the key to the run position, should I hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds? The car was sold on 11/13.
  11. If you have fire, it sounds like you need fuel. Do you know that the fuel pump is working and that the injectors are spraying fuel? If I turn the key to the run position, should I hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds?
  12. I am in Ohio, and the car is in Iowa.
  13. I am thinking of buying a 2002 Boxster with the 2.7 engine and tiptronic. Miles are 43K. The engine will not start, but it turns over freely and the compression is good in all six cylinders. Am I correct to assume that this is not an IMS failure? The plugs fire and there is fuel in the tank. Should I take it to a dealer and see if it stored a code in the computer? Does this sound like an electrical problem?
  14. I went to the Porsche USA website, and sent them an email asking if they would be willing to do a licensing agreement with Subaru to install the Subaru 2.5 boxer engine in place of the Porsche 2.5 boxster engine as a reliability improvement sine the Porsche 2.5 remanufactured engines are out of production and they have issues anyuway. It may make sense to install the Subaru transaxle also. Engine mounts and a wiring harness adaptor would be helpful. The ECU may need to be reprogrammed. I will let you know if I receive a reply.
