  1. Groit's window cleaner wipes do an excellent job of cleaning, and you don't get any over spray on your leather dash, door panels, etc. (BTW, I live in CA and they shipped them to me): http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?&SKU=11192 Griot's lint free windshield towels are the best: http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?SKUupsell=14910 One Grand Blitz is the best carnauba wax I've used (easiest application/removal and best durability): http://www.carcareonline.com/detail.asp?product_id=10201 I've been using Clay Magic on my cars for years: http://www.autopia-carcare.com/awc-88256.html
  2. The valves on the PSE mufflers are vacuum controlled, so you need to install the vacuum stuff in the engine compartment, run a wiring harness to the relay panel (and take apart a bunch of the interior in the process), and rune a wire to the dash switch.
  3. The PSE installation TSB is in the TSB section of the forum. I believe it's around 8 hours work for an experienced tech. I've had PSE on my last 2 Carreras without the switch, and have never wished I had it.
  4. You can get PSE for around $1,500, plus around $100 to install only the mufflers (no electronics/vacuum/switch), which is how mine is installed.
  5. PSE is absolutely the best option you can get!!! Enjoy!!
  6. I heard that Shelton Porsche in Naples (800-949-6070) sells a headlight alarm kit that they say triggers the factory alarm if someone touches the headlights or the area directly around them. $350 for parts, and they say it's about 2 hours labor to install. I haven't tried it, so can't vouch for it, but I heard they are installing it in most xenon equipped cars.
  7. I have the V1 mounted just to the right of the rear view mirror (so it doesn't interfere with the driver's sun visor) and the concealed display on top of the steering column. The concealed display is great, since you only have to look down slightly from your normal driving line-of-sight to see it, instead of up to where the main unit is located, and the mute button is within easy reach. With this install, you need to run the wire up the A pillar (to connect the concealed display and main unit) so using the sunroof power source doesn't buy you anything. I used the sun visor clip, slipped between the headliner support and roof, to mount the main unit (Rob in WA's suggestion). Better than using the suction cups, since you don't see any suction cup marks on the windshield from the outside
  8. Nice pix--could you post larger ones--these don't appear quite life size on my monitor... :jump: :jump:
  9. The streak marks are caused by the regulator pads (each window has 2) getting dirty and smearing the windows (these pads press against the windows to keep them from rattling). Covered by warranty. This is the second time I've had this issue with my 7,000 mile '04 Carrera, and also had it on my first 2 996 Carreras--multiple times on the first one. I saw a Carrera GT at the dealer today (was in to have the car raised 1/2"--it's the owner's daily driver), and I saw a streak on the passenger window!
  10. Update--the intermediate shaft seal was also leaking so they replaced it. Plus both doors window lift mechanisms replaced due to the famous streak marks on the windows (I've had this in all 3 of my 996 Carreras). Oh--and the amplifier, head unit and CD changer are being replaced today due to various issues.
  11. The sound system in my car has been acting crazy for a while--CD 1 button doesn't work properly, the sound settings (bass/treble, etc.) reset themselves to 0, system shuts itself off. Had the dealer look at it while the car was in for the RMS leak, and a new TSB came out last week that referred to problems with the CDR23 and PCMII, and instructing dealer to replace the head unit, amp & CD changer in any cars with problems. Unfortunately, the cd changer was not in stock in the US so they had to order it from Germany so I'll have to bring the car back this week.
  12. My car is a '04 and has the new version seal, so my sample size of 1 says the new seal isn't a panacea, at least after 7,000 miles!
  13. I'm not a happy camper--for sure. I hope Porsche is covering your ***5th*** RMS leak. Now you say you are real pissed...as I recall from living in Amsterdam, and traveling to the UK a few times a month, pissed means something completely different in the UK than it does in the US!!!! I suppose you just Americanized your English here!!!
  14. Here's a few more pix The transmission, clutch and flywheel are removed, exposing the front of the engine: The culprit--the rear main seal (the old one, which is deformed at the bottom from being pulled out): Rector in Burlingame once again providing excellent service.
  15. This is the measuring tool they used. It didn't just slip right in--he had to move it around a bit--is that normal? Only 7K miles--what a hassle. They also have a new TSB on stereo problems. On mine the CD 1 button doesn't function properly, the sound settings (bass/treble) reset themselves periodically, and one day the system kept turning itself off. The new TSB says to replace the radio, CD changer and amp, and update all the SW.
  16. I noticed a few black spots on my garage floor Saturday and today the dealer said it was a RMS leak. They used the measurement tool and said it was OK so they just need to replace the seal, but are also going to measure it the old fashioned way, to double check that it's OK. I watched them put the measurement tool on the car, and it didn't seem to slip right on smoothly--it had to be moved a bit and I heard a bit of a click. The tech said the the test was OK. Any comments on this? Here's a pic I took. Near the bottom, there's a circular thing (is this the intermediate shaft?), and there's a lot of discoloration there. I realize the oil dripping from the RMS would go down there, but could it be that there is a leak there as well? Any thing I should ask or point out to them?
  17. Brandywine has very competitive prices, and great service. Highly recommended.
  18. It doesn't tilt--only moves forward and backward.
  19. Well worth it. Panorama is a nice mag, and the local regions usually have a mag as well. Plus most dealers offer a PCA discount (usually 10%) on parts, and some on labor as well.
  20. There's no way I would have the full install done. I had PSE in my last Carrera and when I bought my '04 Carrera I didn't want to wait to order one, and found one in a dealer's inventory very close to what I wanted, but without PSE. I bought PSE and had just the mufflers installed for $100 at an independent Porsche shop. For the full install, in addition to the large expense, they need to run a harness from the engine compartment to the relay panel, and take apart your interior in the process, which is just asking for squeaks/rattles to be introduced. I would never use the dash switch.
  21. To keep it opened all the time, you remove the relay. Do a search, I'm pretty sure somebody posted how to do this (I did it on my last Carrera).
  22. Your owners manual lists all the replacement bulb sizes, and how to remove the headlight assembly and replace bulbs. Once you determine what sizes you need, there are several sites which sell "xenon matching" bulbs, such as: http://www.powerbulbs.com/index.htm http://store.yahoo.com/rodi/piaa.html http://www.hoen-usa.com/index.htm http://www.autolamps-online.com/home.htm
