Hi I need the part number for the triangular exterior mount for the self dimming mirror with memory seat. There are 12 wires in this mount. It is for an 04' Targa. Thanks cmg

I have just installed a 997 OEM shifter into an 04' Targa. This car has 17K miles on it & shifted perfectly prior to the update. I used the old end fittings but did not have the cable adjustment tool 997-424-383-00 to check centering. The 1st -6th shifts seem to work great but getting into reverse requires me to slap the lever hard to the left before the lever will move into reverse gear. Just moving the lever left & forward will not allow the lever to engage reverse. I don't recall it being that difficult with the 996 shifter. I'm thinking that the 997 shifter simply requires a bit more force or possiblly the cable is out of adjustment. Anyone have a similar experience and or does someone have the correct plastic tool for sale or loan? also how is the cable adjusted. Thanks much. I'm near Atlantic city NJ cmg

Hi TH -Had the exact same problem on my Targa. There is a number on the back of the cap which you can use to do a search on e-bay. I got mine for $20. the cost was less of an issue than the fact that I wanted a used one rather than new so that it would match the other caps. The number on the replacement cap was slightly differant but the picture looked the same & in fact the cap was the same. Until I found the replacement I used a decal that I installed on my old cap. I have an extra decal & would be glad to send it to you nc if you PM me your address. Cris

I tried the mic in the factory position left of the gauge cluster-no good no matter how I tried. The side openings of the mic can not be blocked or it won't work properly. Then I put it on the steering wheel adjustment control. That was ok but a bit troublesome. Now it is on the dash in front of the steering wheel which works great although it is visible. I may try it on the A" pillar as some have done as I am installing a self dimming mirror/rain sensor & will need to remove the pillar anyway to route the mirror wiring. The other possibility is behind the mirror & to the left but out of eyesite. At issue is the fact that if you have a cab or sunroof it will pick up a lot of wind noise mounted high but I think would work best. I also tried the mic button in various spots & ended up putting it on the left forward side of the ashtray which is really handy to use & is out of site when not needed. I installed the Ipod cable in the glovebox which was really easy but you might be able to route it into the ashtray or the rear center console. One option would be to get the ashtray delete option available thru e-bay or some parts sites which would give a bit more room if you wanted the Ipod cable there.

Yes, you are correct. Upon putting the car into reverse, the camera comes on automatically. You can then see behind you as you back up. Once you go into neutral or forward you will automatically have the source screen that you have selected available. I am assumming that you will wire the Kenwood to the rear camera input as opposed to one of the video/audio inputs. The audiovox that I used also had a rear mic so I was thinking of using the video/audio input but could not get it to work quickly. In the end I went with the rear camera input which does not have a separate audio input so I lost that feature available with the audiovox camera.

There are a number of comments on this site about wireless cameras not wokring as well as the wired versions which is why I went to a wired camera. It works great even at night.

Jermey I recently installed the same kenwood DNX 9140 into my 04' Targa. I used an Audiovox rear view wired camera. It was not necessary to wire the Kenwood to the reverse wire under the seat. You can wire the Reverse camera into the the backup light in the taillight. The only restriction is that you can not toggle to reverse to see behind you when going forward like you might want to do if you were towing a trailer. In my case that is not an issue. Cris

Ok guys, As others have stated & I can attest Loren is the best!! I can't believe with as much as you have going on you are gracious enough to help out with my small issue. If anyone has a a Porsche with the M265 option or P11 ordering option & is willing to take off the dome light (attached with two screws under the black lenses) you will find (I hope) a black 1" wide connection that should have a white tag with a part number on it. I need the part number from the side that connects to the rain sensor/dimming mirror & in turn goes across to the A pillar & connects to the intermittant dash switch, relay etc. Altenatively I'd be happy to purchase the same if available used. Finally I'm not sure of the part number that I have but I have installed it on the windshild & it looks similar. I'll check it when I get home.

Loren thanks for the heads up. I have reviewed that TSB as well as almost every thread that I could find on the topic. The TSB 4/98 9212 referenced is for the OEM aftermarket "tequipment kit". That kit does not allow for sensitivity adjustment of the rain sensor which is why I am attempting to install the OEM factory P11 option. The self dimming OEM Tequipment mirror which I coulkd not find will actually fit the non dimming mirror mouunt. However I have managed to get the correct mount for the P11 option & it is installed on the windshield. As an aside I actually have an NOS factory kit with the early adjustment relay which I was going to use untill I acquired the P11 factory option mirror/rain sensor. This dimming mirror has a hole in it which goes around the rain sensor & is integral to the mirror. At issue is the correct harness part number and/or a schematic of the wiring connetions for both the oem P11 mirror & rain sensor. Any help is most appreciated.

Hi- Does anyone have the factory wiring diagram and/or the harness part number for the 04' 996 Targa with the P11 factory option Rain sensor/Dimming mirror. I am retrofitting this option & need to get either the part number of the combo rain sensor/dimming mirror harness that goes from the overhead courtesy lights to the dash switch, relay, door harness etc. No one seems to be able to find this part number so that I can order the harness. This harness has a flat connector approximately an inch wide with 6+ wires that connects to the mirror/rain sensor assembly at the overhead light console. If this harness is integral to the main harness then I will attempt to build my own based on the wiring diagram. If I can get that diagram it also will help me to be certain that I have all the part required to make this retrofit work. Any help would be appreciated including the harness. Thanks

Bill -You may be correct as the web site references the 997 for the current version which works thru the comm screen but I believe the earlier nav-tv version will work on th 03-04 most cars. http://www.navtv.com/userfiles/editor/file...9;s%20Guide.pdf I sent a request to support so I'll post their ans as soon as I get it. this version has its own display. cmg

Fossilburner. I have an 04' Targa & like others have said the MOST system causes angtst in the 03-04 996 cars. With that said I replaced the upgraded Bose system with an Kenwood DNX9140 head unit & an Alpine PDX5 amp. You can not use the factory amp. period. I did however use the stock upgraded Bose speakers & have been very happy with the results. This double din unit gives you voice command, Garmin Nav, Bluetooth, DVD & an Ipod/Mp3 interface as well as garage door/light openers. Pioneer make a similar unit so check out their sites & see what options you are most interested in having. I'd also suggest a check on their respective user sites. There are also a number of threads on this site for you to review relating to the Pioneer Avic & Kenwood installs.

I have been on this quest for self dimming mirrors for quite some time & have finally got all the parts & pieces in hand or on order for my 04 Targa. In your case you have a very simple option for the interior mirror which is to use one of the Gentex mirrors mentioned in various threads on this site. They come with options like the home link, compass etc. and are relatively inexpensive. In so far as the exterior self dimming goes that may be cost prohibitive on the 997 but you might be able to use the interior/exterior self dimming kit on the 996 assuming the mirror bases are the same or that yours coud be modified.[At least with the Gentex you get interior dimming with little cost or hassel.

As I was entering the expressway this guy in his 4 X truck deliberately moves into the only place I can enter so I hit the brakes & horn but HORN! I don't use the horn very much & this is on an 04' Targa with 15000 miles but I sure needed it then. Can't possibly be both horns but after reviewing the info on the site I figured that was all that was left & anyway I could at least clean the radiators while I was at it. Well it was both horns & a trip to Pep Boys for the double the decible model worked out great. Only issue was with the rivits by the wheel wheels. They took me forever to get out. I tried the lubricant but on my car there are two differant plunger type of rivits. There is the standard described in this thread which was relatively easy to get off but there is another type that has an off set plunger. You can tell the differance by the indentation on either side of the plunger suitable to fit a small flat blade screwdriver. The first one took me a good hour to get off. Use lubricant & work each side of the plunger until you get it all the way out. I moved it in & out to try to get the lubricant to work a bit better as well as side to side. I did this to release the interior wheel shields as I could not bend mine from behind the bumper to get to the interior screw under the side marker light. Many thanks for the video & write up. Btw I don't think both horns "suddenly" went out but rather one went & I never realized it and then the other just stoped an a very inconviniet time.

Thanks for the response but what I am trying to figure out is if I can order just the glass & not the whole "kit" to make the auto dim function work. I re-read the TSB which seems to indicate there is a 15 pin plug attached to the new base which may mean that if I want auto dimming mirrors I must have the new base unless I can order that socket separately? Yes I do have the new harness already. Any thoughts ?

I am in the process of adding the rain sensor as well as interior & exterior auto dimming mirrors to my 04' 996 Targa with memory seats. I have acquired most of the parts except for the exterior mirror. In reviewing the TSB 6827 there is a "kit" # 000 044 801 52 for cars with memory seats which includes a mirror base # 996731 984 0170c as well as the actual glass & other misc parts. I am wondering if I have to order the complete kit or if I can order just the auto dazzle glass #996 731 983 00 which is much less expensive. I already have a heated mirror which obviously has a base. So here are my questions. Is the base in the "Kit " differant somehow from the base that is on my mirror currently? If so how are they differant. In other words can I modify my base. Does anyone have a "kit" for sale. I am also curious as to weather or not both exterior mirrors are supposed to be auto dimming. The TSB seems to only referance the drivers side? Thanks much for any help you can provide.

Basically a lot depends on which MOST Bose system you have. There is the stock version 4 channel & the Bose upgrade sound system M680 which has the 6 channel Bose amp. In terms of amps you have two choices that I might suggest. Many posts talk about the Alpine PDX5 which is a four channel amp plus a mono 5th channel for the sub. If you use that amp it will work fine with the sub even though the sub is one ohm. Simply turn the gain down on the amp and adjust it with the head unit. Many folks say that amps are not stable below 2 ohms but this seems to work just fine at least for the sub. You'll need to check the impedamce at the harness after you disconnect the old amp to verify the resistance in your speakers. You'll find the wiring diagrams on this site. In my case the rears were 4 ohms while the doors & dash were 2 ohms each. Therefore I wired in series the doors & dash to get a balanced load of 4 ohms per channel. The sound is outstanding & I have left the factory gain settings of the Alpine except for the sub as described. The head unit has so many controls I still have not gotten them figured out so I am going slowly but I am liking it alot. My sub in the passenger footwell was not powered so another way that would work would be to use the din wire from your head unit for the sub which may make you more comfortable than using the 5 channel amp to power the sub. In that case you could save a few dollars by getting a four channel amp. You'll find some wiring notes above that may help as I had a tough time figuring out what I was going to do. As an alternative you might consider a JL 6 channel amp which I believe has no stability restrictions eliminating any rewiring but of course the HU would need to support the 6 channel setup & very few do. The only rewiring necessary is at the harness & consists of just two jumper wires to connect the doors & dash in series plus the wires to go from the amp to the speakers also at the Bose harness. Like you I am not all that into the audio but wanted GPS Bluetooth, voice controls so I could shift change channels & talk as well as ipod. I threw in a rear view camer while I was at it. Last but not least I was pleasantly surprised to find out these old ears really can tell a differance between what I had & what I got.

Does anyone know if the aluminum/stainless 997 targa roof line strips are interchangeable with the painted ones on the 996 specifically the 04' Targa? Also what is involved in the removal & installation Thanks CMG
