  1. Does anyone know if the option code sticker on a 2005 997 Carrera should be located on the inside of the front hood like the 996? Two 997,s I looked at recently were missing the sticker.
  2. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus worked fine for me last winter. Chicago has it's fair share of snow and I didn't have any problems. I was surprised at the grip actually and my 996 Carerra traction seemed comparable to some much heavier all wheel drive vehicles. I left them on the rest of the year and have been satisfied with them in the summer as well. I do not track the car or have many opportunities to explore the limits of adhesion, but in my opinion they are an excellent compromise. Guess it depends on the individual though. I plan to keep them on this Chicago winter.
  3. Dumb question, but how do you drain all the oil since there is oil in the crankase, oil cooler, and the lines that connect from front to rear of the car? Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think there is more to it than just draining oil from one plug. The air filter change is certainly a simple task, but at the time it was a matter of convenience. As most shops do, there is usually a "courtesy check" involved that may lead to more work but can be informative towards future preventative maintenance. Thanks to all for any and all of the comments and suggestions.
  4. Indy in Chicago area was $295.00 for oil change and air filter change on my 996. Not sure if this is a competitive price or not,
  5. When the temp needle is covering the right edge of the 0 of the 180 mark, my HVAC LED readout indicates 104 degrees Centigrade. That translates to 220 degrees Farenhiet. I would imagine all guages are a little different, as there must be some tolerence for error. On a hot day in Chicago my temp usually moves from 96 to 98 degrees Centigrade. This is in moderate traffic. When arriving home and backing into my garage it does go up to the 104 reading briefly. This is on my 2001 996 Carrera now with 37K, manual 6 speed. Had radiators cleaned , flushed, coolant tank and cap replaced less than a year ago because I thought this was kinda high. Nothing changed at all regarding the temp readings though.
  6. Sibates I know you are right! I do worry too much about this kinda stuff. Sometimes I wish there was no temperature guage at all in my 996. I've had plenty of cars that I would just turn the ignition key and go, but I respect the Porsche marque to the point of paranoia. I would suspect that three different input sources would produce three different temp readings. I am also too analytical, but your information does take the edge off my excessive worrying. Thanks for your reply. This site provides help (therapy) to me in knowing that I am not alone.
  7. Loren, my 2001 996 also has the climate control feature. Must be an early manufactured date. Found the link that describes most of the 36 function readouts. Thanks for your help.
  8. Been searching for awhile now regarding those digital display values for my 2001 996. Anybody else have any luck, and what did you type in for the search? Thanks, any help is much appreciated. Been getting up to 104 degrees centigrade on the digital readout display. This is after maybe 30 minutes driving in moderate traffic with around 80 degree weather after dark. After it peaks at 104 centigrade it slowly goes down to 96 - 98 centigrade. The temp needle covers the right edge of the 0 of the 180 mark at 104 centigrade digital readout. Can this be normal? Had my coolant flushed, new coolant tank and cap done about 6 months ago. Radiator areas are clean and like new. I am starting to think I am worrying too much about the temperature, but is there is anything that can be done to bring it down a bit? I would hope that if Porsche thought a normally aspirated 996 needed a third radiator they would have designed it that way and included it from the factory.
  9. My 2001 996 also has this interesting feature. Just wondering if anyone knows what the other 35 values indicate. On a hot summer day my temp guage needle commonly splits the zero of the 180 reading. The digital readout at this point reads at 100 degrees centigrade, which is 212 degrees (water boiling point) farenheit? Sounds very hot to me, but under pressure the coolant properties must prevent boiling?
  10. Recently the horn on my 2001 Carrera stopped working. It seems that it works intermittently, but not all the time. It doesn't matter what position the steering wheel is in. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Anyone else with a similar experience? Thanks for any advice.
  11. Ok sounds good. It looks like it might take a twist and snap motion from what I looked at. Now gonna try to locate the part local to the Chicago area. You have been a tremendous help. Thanks again.
  12. Thank you Loren. The rose is missing. The plastic pin has enough travel, but without the rose piece to guide it, it is not seating in the plastic loop piece mounted on the fuel door. Does the rose just snap into place where the plastic pin ejects from or is it a more complicated fix? I'm going to try and get the part number and see how difficult it is to install. Thanks again.
  13. No sure. Gotta take a close look at the guide. I do remember seeing a black plastic fixture there but I need to check out the position it is in. Can this guide piece be purchased separately or does it only come in a kit? Your pics are excellent. I need to take a pic of mine and compare it to your illustrations. I am thinking the rose is missing but now that I know where to start, I need to take a closer look at the rose guide area. Gonna tackle that challenge in the morning. Thanks again!
  14. No Loren. The black plastic loop that the pin should seat in is there and appears to be solidly mounted on the fuel door. When locking the car with the remote key the pin seems to travel far enough to fit into the plastic loop, but I can still open the fuel door because the pin is missing the loop for some reason when it fully extends. Maybe it is not aligning correctly into the plastic loop. I have tested it with the door open and can see the plastic pin travel in and out maybe an inch or more, but after I close the fuel door I can't see what is going on. Thanks for your reply.
  15. Just wondering if anyone out there has a fuel cap that locks properly. My 2001 996 C2 has relatively low miles (34K) and the locking mechanism isn't locking properly. All the moving parts seem to be functioning and it appears all the necessary pieces are intact. The pin moves in and out far enough but it misses the small plastic loop fastened to the cap. It appears to be a poor design but that is just my opinion. Trying to decide if it's worth tearing apart the wheel well area to investigate further, but it looks like all is ok except for the pin not guiding into the plastic loop. Thanks for any help.
  16. Great looking car! Nice pics. Must'a been a fun drive home. Congratulations.
  17. Does anyone have information regarding the CDR 220 radio as far as wattage output goes? I have the 10 speaker sysem and what appears to be an amplifier in the center inside the front hood. The speakers do not sau Bose on them. From all the pics I have seen there seems to have been a number of options available. Thank you, 2001 996 C2 Coupe.
  18. Thanks Loren, but somehow the correct code came out as 9410. Appreciate your efforts though.
  19. Just had my Front Crankshaft Seal replaced today. I was wondering if that is a common problem. 2001 996 Carrera with 32K miles. There was some seepage outlining the shape of the seal but no leaks on my garage floor. Also concerned if this indicates future problems involving the IMS and/or RMS. Also had the drivers side window regulator replaced. Seems like pretty low mileage to have these things go bad, but the window mechanism does appear to be prone to issues because of the way the glass drops slightly when opening the door and raises back up when closing the door. Anyone else had experience with these issues? Thanks for any replys.
  20. Please help Becker 1 Type 4462 Serial Number: Y 5047642
  21. Becker 1 Type 4462 Serial Number: Y 5047642
  22. Looks great! Huge improvement! Just wondering what tires you got on in that pic? Kinda look like my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus's. Thought mine was the only 996 running them tires.
