  1. Opinion? Awlays :D I ended up with GHL's "medium" in my coupe. I tried Fabspeed in my Cabrio and the resonation and loudness where, to me, too much. And I have some ear damage from my youth when my machine gunner let off an M60 long burst and my face was next to the muzzle, in a very dark night. Seeing that you have a cab, you may want to try to listen to them first. Now with the coupe, the GHL's are fairly tame. But quite a few people have complimented the car sound on track, I can't hear a thing with the helmet on There are others, Like Don from Cap Cod who have the Fabspeeds in a cabrio and enjoy it. I think you will find sounds will be like colors, a matter of preference. I think either way, you will enjoy lighter weight, better sound, and you will notice a quicker wind up of the engine as the backpressure is less.
  2. Joe, do a search by "P0440" or "Tank ventilation" and you will find a good bit of information. Could be as simple as a gas tank cap replacement or you may need to get to the Evap canister or filter. All in there when you do the search. Izzy
  3. No, they are not. If there are any shops nearby that work on Porsches (such as http://www.balancedperformance.com/performance.html ) in Sugar Hill near Atlanta, they may have stock mufflers from cars they upgraded and may sell them to you on the cheap. Call Ron Delvalle at Phone: (678) 546-3133, tell him Izzy sent you. If he doesn't remember me, tell him the craziest student he had at Roebling Road last year.
  4. Sounds very familiar to me, some roads and crawling speeds just want to take your wheel. Also at slowing down in a traffic light, the pavement differences may deceive your eyes, they can be significant. Any construction going on around where big heavy fat trucks drive? Those areas seem to be the worse. If you are crawling in a highway, that is perfect and smooth, and don't have the same feeling, then is probably just the roads, built by the lowest bidder with the cheapest materials and the lowest warranty. Your taxes at work.... Doesn't happen with the minivan though, lots of slop on that steering!
  5. Mike, If you remove the headlight assembly (look in the owners manual for simple directions) and shine a light in the hole you may find a hose disconnected. It worked for me once. Izzy
  6. Sunset Porsche (on the links above) is a good bet, they run specials on MAF and O2 sensors regularly.
  7. Krytox is a Dupont product used in manufacturing clean room applications, as non splattering lubricant. In case you can't find it, it is sold in industrial supply houses, could be cheaper than the dealer. Places like McMaster Carr, etc.
  8. I would still first the fluid. I had the same condition twice, and the lid did not move. More fluid solved it. A year later the lid would not move again, and it was the lid motor. But that part is $400. I would recommend to do the cheap stuff first, the fluid is a couple of bucks. Just my opinion.
  9. Based on the mileage and the codes it could be the MAF but also the Oxygen sensors. Mine had lasted 62K miles, and from other readings in the forum seems to be about the life.
  10. I will work on that, my wife got a new MP3 that has a voice recorder (still in the box) that could work. I am not that tech savvy, still holding on to my 8 -track player.
  11. Hmm, not quite, that sounds like a "knocking" more than a rattle to me. What I have always heard on mine, even "loaner" cars at the dealer when I pick them up in a cold morning and they park them in a carport, is a metal rattle. closer to a loose piece of metal, thin or hollow rubbing on another at a high frequency. Like two metal shields hitting each other at high frequency, the sound is also higher frequency (with my ear-meter) than the sound file (lower frequency). I did asked once when picking up a loaner, and was reassured that it's "normal". But the air temp is below 50, and the car dead cold. Goes away within 20-30 secs. I will try the suggestions above with the A/C off this evening, see if it makes a diff.
  12. Sounds pretty normal to me. It depends where the car is the noise could be startling. For example, open area, can't hear it, low ceiling garage with cars next to you, sound louder. It just bounces around. Bot my 99 and 03 do the same thing
  13. If any of you guys owns a late model Honday Odyssey, you probably got a letter from a certain court telling you about the class action suit Honda just agreed to settler, based on the fact that the odometer are 4% off. The settlement entitles you to extended mileage warranty in your car. I got one (2006 minivan) and keep it in glove box for future, as dealers will honor the settlement. Not sure if Porsche has the same issue or is it speed only? Let me know if you want more detail, I can get to the letter when I get home tonight. I don't drive the van..... me wanna go fast.....
  14. Good question Viper, is it a pull handle or button Scouser? My 99 has a pull handle, when I had the same problem I had to open and lock the car with the key on the door a couple of times, and it was back to normal. The 03 with the button is a different story. But the battery was "filled" again. The cable I used is the shiny cable, flashlight and a wire hanger, between the passenger headligh and bumper cover. Should be in there somewhere. The side markers hole, if you can see it, should be towards the front. Look like an aircraft wire with a loop on the end. The wire hanges made it easier for me to hook it and pull.
  15. Is the top light blinking when you press it after it stops moving? One of two things come to mind, the clam cover motor or simply you have a low hydraulic fluid. If you have never had any service done on the top, based on the age, that would be my guess. Look at the TSB's and the DIY for details on them. Do a search by "convertible" or "cabrio", you will see similar problems, same solutions. Izzy
  16. Awesome car, great color. Not familiar if in your location a red 911 is a traffic police magnet or not. Enjoy it! And welcome. Oil, what oil? We don't need no stinkin' oil!
  17. Sorry man, I can not confirm THAT :D , only that my 99 has a DME and a Tip module. My wife has certified that I AM mad anyways, and incapable of diagnosing other car crazies.....
  18. You might have been right the first time. Here are sections of the manuals for 99. Items 2 and 3. This is the same as my 99 picture above. Don't have the PET, but at leas the manual shows separate controllers.
  19. It bugs me a little bit too Richard, my 99 Cabrio Tip had two separate boxes. They are bolted together under the folding top carpet area, but have different connectors This picture shows the area I am talking about, and the you can see two controllers to the right of the hydraulic pump (with the green sticker) and two connectors going to each box, the DME and the Tip module. This is my 99 Tiptronic. Scott, the price is not bad, I had a $7K replacement here in town, for a rebuilt. Perhaps your mechanic can look at any worn parts of the incoming and replace those parts before mounting.
  20. Scouser, Mine was on accessible between the space of the headlight and the bumper cover, US version passenger side. With a flashlight, look for the shiny cable. Maybe be also by removing the side marker on the right side, shine a light and you may see it there too.
  21. Sent you a long email with the real reason as to why ME's are not allowed in hell.......
  22. True, very true, but I prefer the term "imaginative problem solving" instead of jury rig or jimmy rigging. I can still hear my brother-in-law going "what the hell are you doing with that?!", in reference to my many "fixes". Then again, he is an Industrial Engineer, what do they know about the properties of duct tape and bailing wire.......?
  23. Not meaning to counter you, MechE, but Warranties-4Wheels will do cars past the thresholds you mention. I did use them for my 99 Cabrio. The negative side is that they are just a broker and will sell your policy to someone else and you can get very BAD results. From my own personal experience with them, would not recommend that route. By the way, Mechanical Engineers are the smartest people on earth, ask me how I know. Izzy ME '83 MS ME '96
  24. That is about right, manage the risk for the reward. Depending on the price, it could be a good deal or a nightmare. My opinion, I would keep looking, even if the price was right, too much to worry about. The coolant more than anything is the wildcard.
  25. Viola, haven't heard of RMR, but sound like a cool startrek type of tool. What is the information, full name, model, etc. and do you have a website for the manufacturer to go see? Thanks in advance. Izzy
