  1. No previous body work carried out. Nothing has fallen on the window. No one has touched it. I don’t know but does the sealant lose (part of) its flexibility over the course of time. I’ll ask the person who is going to replace the window. I had the front window replaced a few years ago. I think replacing the rear window is more difficult than replacing the front window. I could, of course, be mistaken. I have removed most of the window, but around the edges the sealant holds a lot of glass splinters. I’m afraid some/a lot of them are going to end up in all sorts of openings of the body. Don’t want that to happen, of course.
  2. Had it been a convertible yes, but it is a coupe. As yet it remains a mystery. It must have been caused by tension in the window. There are stories on the Internet telling about Volkswagens which have windows that break spontaneously. jo996
  3. To my horror I discovered that the rear window is my 996 was cracked. I have no idea what has happened. The car is not used during the winter months and is parked in the garage at a constant temperature. No one has touched the car and nothing has fallen on the window. I have already contacted my Porsche dealer asking them what could have caused the window to crack spontaneously. As they had never heard of this having happened before they could not give me an answer. My Porsche dealer hires an outside firm to repair windows and as I do not want to drive the car without a rear window the repair will be done at my place. I have to rely on the expertise of the person who is coming to replace the window. I would, however, Very much like to know how he is supposed to install the new window. I take it that Porsche has guidelines for repairing the rear window. For instance, I can well imagine that part of the interior trim has to be removed. Does anyone know what these guidelines are? Does anyone have an idea what might have caused the window to break spontaneously? Is my case a one-off or has this happened more often? Jo996 the Netherlands
  4. Yesterday I asked where I could find the plug to drain the dif oil on my Porsche 996 Carrera4 Tiptronic. Thanks to members of this forum I now know how to do that. My next problem is a trickier one. I thought I had solved the problem of the oildrops on my garage floor. I thought they were drops of transmission oil. As I had already planned to change the transmission oil and the gasket I thought that would stop the leaking. However, as it now turns out it seems that the oil is coming from the rear dif. It's slightly wet. So a number of questions. Is there a gasket between the two parts of the dif? (P 996 late 1998) Is it easy to open the dif and change (if there is one) the gasket? Are any vital parts going to fall out when the dif is opened? (I hope this doen't sound like a stupid question.) Any information is any pictures are) more than welcome. Jo996 the Netherlands
  5. I've just tried to change the dif fluid on my 996. Changing the oil on the front differential was no problem. The rear dif, however, was a totally different matter. I had already asked my Porsche dealer whether It was something I could do myself and I was told it shouldn't be a problem. Finding the filling plug was no problem, but finding the draining plug was. I simply couldn't find.it. So, is there a plug to drain the dif oil and where is it? A few minutes ago I also found a YouTube film in which someone is changing the dif oil on his 996. His differential looks different, might be a later car. Mine is a late1998. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Jo996 the Netherlands
  6. Hello Loren, Thank you for your answer. I tried the connector and it seems fine. I used some contactspray to make sure the contacts are OK. I checked the fuse (D8). I take it there is only one fuse for the spoiler motor. I have never had any problems with my spolier before. Never heard any strange noises. I hope the motor is still OK. The next step (before going to my Porsche dealer) is to check the wires. In order to do this I have to remove a black lid (I hope you know what I'm talking about). The spoiler motor is attached to this part. Can you tell me how to remove this lid? Regards, J. Lemmen the Netherlands
  7. Hello, I have just encountered the same problem. Red warning light went on. At home I tried to operate the spoiler manually. No luck! I checked the fuse and its fine. I also checked the connector. Seems to be fine. I know that somewhere in the lid there are 2 (?) microswitches. Could they be at fault? I would also like to check the wires going to the motor operating the spoiler. I can't get the black lid off. There are just three tiny bolts left, holding the spoiler motor. How do I do this?   8. Hello, It has taken me almost two years to finally find out where this awfully irritating noise in my sliding/tilting roof comes from. I must have removed the roof about a dozen times, but never succeeded in finding the cause of the noise. Yesterday evening I read all the TSBs on noises in the Porsche 996. In the TSB on noises in the trim panel area (Part ID 2/00 Number 70..) I read about complaint 10: "crackling noises at the frame of the roof lining for the sliding/tilting roof cutout". I removed the sliding roof and the panel. Then I put the roof back, but this time without the panel. While driving the car all I had to do to stop the noise was push the roof lining near the cutout on the passenger side. I thought the noise to be a metallic one, so the thought that the lining could have anything to do with this never crossed my mind. Of course, I should have read all the TSBs on noises much earlier. It would have saved a lot of irritation. In the TSB it reads that in order to get rid of the noise grease free chalk should be applied to neutralize the area of excessive adhesive. Has anyone got an idea how I have to do this? Where do I get grease free chalk? I would really appreciate your help. jo996 the Netherlands

  10. Hello Loren, Thank you for your answer. It wouldn't really be a problem if I had to re-teach the memory of the sunroof a few times per year. In my case, however, it loses its memory within, let's say, 2 or 3 minutes. Where in the car is the memory of the sunroof located. Can the memory be accessed? Can it be replaced? Have you heard of the problem before? Is disconnecting the battery an option? It is a way of re-setting other functions. My car is due for its annual service this Tuesday. Can my Porsche dealer, for instance, reset the memory. Can they re-train the memory by means of a computer. I know, ever so many questions, but it would be nice to have some idea of what is wrong with the switch/memory before asking Porsche to have a look at it. I wonder whether they have heard of this problem before and know how to solve it. I happened to be in Germany on Friday and drove passed a Porsche Centre. I thought it would be a good idea to ask whether they had any idea what could be wrong. The answer I got was most dissatisfying. The mechanic tried the switch and said I had probably pushed the switch too often and therefore it (the sunroof/switch) did these strange things. I'm quite sure I gave the switch/sunroof plenty of time to 'understand' the commands. Regards, Jo996 the Netherlands
  11. Hello, Since last week I've had a problem with my sunroof. The switch with which to open the sunroof, in fact, consists of three switches/positions. In order to tilt the roof, normally, I have to push the round 'button' in the middle of the switch. For some reason this no longer works. First I have to press the 'close-switch' a few times. Then the roof tilts and closes again. Next I can use the 'open switch' to open the sunroof. It then seems to operate fine, but unfortunately not for long. I have tried the 're-teaching' option. Again this seems to work, but not for long. My idea is that the 'tilt-open-close' cycle loses its memory. Has anyone got an idea what can possibly be wrong, or better yet, know the solution to this problem. I forgot to mention that I drive a 996 (1998). Regards, Jo996 the Netherlands
  12. Hello Loren, Spot on, the light bulb needed to be replaced. Changing bulb was a piece of cake. When I removed the instrument cluster I noticed that it had been out before. The paper seal at the back of the instruments had been torn. In my service booklet there are three modification entries, one of which reads: AY 83 Combi-instrument. Have you got any idea what was done? Thank you for your advice. jo996
  13. Hello, I recently noticed that when I switch on the ignition the red light of the safety belt in the instrument cluster no longer lights up. I even have my doubts whether it ever did. Could it be that the previous owner had the Porsche dealer switch this function off? Do I need the Porsche dealer's assistance to have this undone?   14. Hello Toddel68, I have been thinking about installing a PSE for some weeks now and I have been gathering all sorts of information via a number of Porsche forums. There's no denying that www.renntech.org offers the best information. Within a few weeks I hope to start installing a PSE on my 996 C4 (November 1998). I have read that you also have a TSB in German on how to install a PSE. It would make the installation easier I think having both the English and the German version of the TSB, especially when having to do the electrical wiring. So, could you do me a favour and, if possible that is, mail me a copy of the German version. Thanks a lot, jo996 (the Netherlands)
  15. Hello, I'm thinking of installing a Porsche Sport Exhaust on my 996C4 (Nov. 98). I have already found a lot of useful information on this forum, so I think it's going to be a DIY- job. I have already found out that I have to remove the driver's side front seat and the driver's side doorsill/ sill cover. How do I do that? Should anyone have any additional information which is useful, I'd be most grateful. For instance, is the PSE reliable. I think I have read somewhere that it is not possible to order the glossy switch to switch the system on and off. Is that true? Thank you for your help. jo996 (the Netherlands)
  16. Hello, Some time ago the light from my temp gauge started blinking during a fast ride on the German Autobahn. And yes, as Izzy suggested, the car was low on coolant. I drove the car to my Porsche dealer and they explained what had happened. Due to high temperature the coolant hoses expand. The coolant level drops and the sensor 'detects' that the car is low on coolant. I checked the car when the engine was cold. The coolant level was somewhere between min. and max. This expalins the flashing light. Happens more often according to Porsche. Bought some Porsche coolant and was given the advice to mix it with 50% water. Question: Is it really necessary to mix the coolant with water and if so do I have to use demineralised water or not? jo996
  17. Hello, Loren thank you for your reply. The temperature of the coolant was normal, I think. The temperature was slightly above 85 C. The red light was not on all the time. It was flashing. jo996
  18. Hello, I have just taken my Porsche for a spin on the German Autobahn. As there was no speed limit I drove the car at about 160 miles for something like five minutes. Then I noticed a flashing light from the temp gauge. I found a spot where I could park the car and waited for about five minutes. The light had stopped flashing and did not go on again. According to the instruction manual a flashing light from the temp gauge indicates that the deck lid fan does not function properly. I have already found some very useful information on this forum, so I know that the fan itself works, that the fuse is OK. I have also found the temp sensor in the engine compartment. According to one of the forum members the fan should go on when disconnecting the probe. I tried this (yes, ignition on), but nothing happened. As to my questions. Have I forgotten anything? Is it perhaps possible to connect the two cables that go to the probe to test the fan. If it is indeed a malfunctioning probe, how do I test this? If it is the probe, how do I remove it?   20. Hello, About a week ago I received the instrument bezel overlays for my P 996. To my horror they have not been painted at all. They are a set of 5 aluminium rings. They do fit, but the colour does not match with the other alloy accessories at all. So, there is only one solution. I will have to spray-paint them myself. To make these rings look really good I want to spray them in exactly the same colour as the rest of the alloy parts of the interior. Does anyone know the colour code Porsche used for these components (e.g. the handbrake, the gearstick, etc.)? jo996
  21. Hello, Today I received a set of instrument bezel overlays for my Porsche 996. The rings are supposed to be mounted using tape, which was included in the set. Unfortunately, the delivery came without any instructions where to put the tape. Has anyone got an idea where you put this tape. On the instruments and if so where exactly or perhaps on the inside of the rings and again where? I don't like using glue, because this will show should I decide to remove the overlays.   22. Hello, Had exactly the same problem. I' m allergic to noises in my car I can't trace. I also had problems with my windshield which at times makes noises which seem to be coming from the dashboard. Bought some kind of fluid at my local Porsche dealer. Back to the rattle in the door. In my case it was only one loose screw that caused the noise. Applied some glue to the screw while tightening it. Problem has never re-appeared. Had to remove the door panel. The entire job took me about 40 minutes. There is information on this forum how to remove the doorpanel. It really is a piece of cake. Good luck hunting down the rattle. jo996
  23. Hello, I am having my bumpers of my 966 re-sprayed. It's a 996 C4 tip. November '98. I was wondering whether it is very difficult to install parkassist. Drilling holes into the bumper won't be much of a problem, but what about the correct wiring. Has anyone tried to install parkassist? Any idea how much approximately this is going to cost. I'm thinking of using original Porsche parts (sensors etc.). Looking forward to your advice, jo996 the netherlands

My car had RMS failure last year and I keep reading threads of RMS re-occurring. I tried the link to the article in Excellence magazine, but it doesn't work. Any suggestions what I can do? jo996
  25. Hello Toolpants, Thank you for your reaction. Last night Isolved the problem. After I had removed the carpet from the boot I noticed two wires going to the lock of the boot. I removed the lock and sprayed it (and the integrated switch - you can only see two wires going somewhere-) with contact spray. The problem was solved. The light goes on again. However, my initial thought was that the switch would be hidden under the latches for the boot and the engine compartment. I tried to remove these, but was unable to reach the third screw due to the chair which was in the way. There are 4 bolts holding the chair, but fortunately I didn't have the correct tool to loosen them, otherwise this is what I would have done. Suppose I would want to remove the chair, is this all I have to do, remove these four bolts? What about the electrical wiring? How do I disconnect all the plugs? What about the battery, must it be disconnected, too? jo996 (The Netherlands)
