  1. I have an 07 S and have had two of the plasitc balls break. Dealer told me to periodically put top up and down during winter storage. Don't really buy that, plus I don't like doing this when vinyl is below 50.
  2. Updating my original post. I totally killed my battery by leaving the trunk open while in storage. Car had about 14,000 miles. I removed the dead battery, got some life back in it using a Sears non-commercial charger, then took it to a service station. They finished the charge and it tested "good." Rinstalled and works fine. Only hassles was were learning about how you cannot remove the key when the battery is dead and reprogramming the radio statioins.
  3. I've an '07 S w/ ~15K miles that is in storage. I managed to totally kill the battery by leaving the front hood unlatched. First, can that dead battery be revived by charging, or is it toast? Second, even local Porsche dealer does not sell Porsche-branded battteries; they sell Interstate. Does the forum have a preference for non-OEM batteries? Finally, I'm planning to leave the car with a s dead battery for the remainder off the winter and research on the forum suggests that's fine. is it? Thanks
  4. stef -- i just had to wish you good luck on this. Let us know. Best, jef
  5. I'm beginning to think the $$$ for 19s is not for me. I must admit that I've been driven by looks, but can't shake the fact that 18s are almost cerrtainly lighter, ride better , handle inevitable road hazards better, and I could do all kinds of fun things w/ the $6K. BTW one of then mainstream car mags that's at newstands now has an article comparing many wheel sizes installed on a VW, using the same tires (except for speed rating) and wheels. In short, the largest diameter was heavier and slower. The perfomrance and mileage hit was remarkable. Re going through Wheel Enhancements, they were no bargain versus the dealer and the dealer is local. I much prefer shopping local. Following is their April 7, 2010 reply to my email query: __________________ Subject: RE: Site Inquiry: Carrera SportA new set delivered would cost $5800.00. Your wheels would only be worth $600.00 in trade, no value in the tires. I would suggest you use the TPMS sensors that are in your wheels because a new set added $500.00 to the price. Please call us at 310-836-8908 to discuss between 7AM and 5PM PST. Thank you, John P. Brown, Wheel Enhancement ___________ Jef
  6. +1 on this. Waaaaaaayyyyy too much. I'd buy a nice lightly used set, or go through Wheel Enhancement. To OP - at least you can acknowledge that the 19s on these cars are ALL about the looks. With 18s you can get the same amount of contact patch, better ride quality, and no less performance on track if you decide to go there. Hell, with less unsprung weight you may realize a performance gain. For my money I'd skip the fashion statement and enjoy what you got. My 997S came with 19s OEM and I hate the ride and extra tire cost. If not, I voted for the Lobsters. They're the lightest option in your list, and handsomest on the Boxster in my opinion.
  7. I'm going through the same thing. I've a burgundy 2007 S w/ 18" S rims and am leaning toward the OEM Carerra Sport (19"). I'd really like to get a set of 2011 Spyder rims but have not been able to find a vendor and imagine the price would be horrible. A local dealer (HBL) has a package of Carrera rims, tires (Conti), and sensors, for $6,076, installed. I pick the Sport Design, and will take this opportunity to say the lobster forks are freaking ugly, IMHO. Stock sometimes look pretty darn good to me, but I want something different than all the other Ss out there. Good luck. Jef
  8. Loren -- thanks. I need trim tools. Can you suggest a vendor?
  9. This is a bit embarrasing. I bought a beautifully-painted rear console for my 07 Boxster S from BumperPlugs and need to install it (so I can finally send the old one to Eric). I've got the B&M short shifter instructions but cannot manage to get past the first step -- removal of the leather boot. .... Where is the clip? Under the leather on the right? Do I release it by finding it through the leather, or do I push on the plastic ring that the leather is attached to? Thanks, jef
  10. I'd like to get a set of the lightweight Boxster Spider rims for my 2007 S. Will they be availble? Also, I read in Road & Track that they have different offset than standard S rims, giving a wider stance to the car. I've tried to ID the precise offset but had no luck. Anyone know? Finally, anyone know the weights of the Spider rims? Best
  11. I've an 07 Boxster S w/ OEM 18" rims. I want new rims, probably 19" Carrera Sport. I've seen discussions of issues w/ reverse lip rims, but I'm not sure I understand exactly what this means. Can the board help me with that? I assume it's not found on the Carrea Sport or SportDesign rims offered by Porsche. Correct? Some report big problems with balance issues when a reverse lip rim fails to shed rainwater. My car is driven in the rain, quickly, so I can't have this issue. Also, it appears that reverse lip imbalance is a problem in some (all?) models made by HRE, DPE and iForged. True? Finally, some discussions have suggested that 19" setups don't handle heavy rain as well as 18." I'm dubious on this (assuming wet weather tires), but am concerned because I want very good rain traction -- figuiring I'll push the car's limits in rain much more than I'll push its limits on dry pavement. No snow or ice, just rain. Best
  12. Finallly replaced my base Boxster w/ an 07 S, and on the first wash I discovered that the car has a fake air intake where the third radiator used to be. This is a real blow to me. Really. I've always hated the fake air scoops and brake vents that riddle American cars, now I find the same thing on my Boxster. Honestly, I so thought Porsche would never do such a thing that I found myself wondering if my used S w/ only 4K miles was a fake. What gives? When did Porsche dump the 3d radiator on the S? Is it the same on Caymen S? Is there some aerodynamic/ground force benefit that I don't understand, or is this the GM-ization of Porsche? Jef
  13. I just replaced my 2000 base w/ a 2007 S. Loved the 2000, but wow! The '07 is Carmen Red. I plan to paint the roll bar to match (HBL Porsche estimate is $800), maybe add matching console from BumperPlugs, and paint the side vents. Any of you have photos you can post of a car (other than silver) w/ painted vents? Thanks Jef
  14. secuuda -- I'm thinking of buying a Carmen red 07 S w/ a grey interior, and if I do I'll want to paint the roll bar and the console. Did you paint your roll bar? How'd it come out? Anyone know about painting consoles? Also, secuuda, I've been looking everywhere for an 07 S in carmen and beige, to replace my 2000 w/ the same colors. I really like those colors but can't find it used, so I'm thinking I may settle for the grey. Jef
  15. I see I should have posted this in 997-1, so I'm reposting there. Sorry for cluttering things up. -- Jef
  16. I'm still driving my first Porsche: 2000 Boxster, maroon w/ saddle interior. I've wanted more power and a 6-speed from day one, but I went for my current car almost entirely because of the colors. I've found a "06 Carrera Cabriolet in Carmen red w/ brown interior. See http://www.porscheoftysons.com/detail-2006...et-4102108.html. It's beautiful. 32k miles $53,000, extended warranty. The car is from Florida and I live in Washington DC. It does not have heated seats. The dealer will install the seats, but not the factory set up. Says they are "too expensive." (I guess he knows how we feel.) I'm thinking there's no way I'll settle for after market heaters w/ non Porsche control buttons. What do you all think? Also, can someone tell me the Porsche part numbers for both seat heaters? I really don't want to spend $40K on a car right now (they are offering me $11 for my pristine '00 Boxster w/ 53k miles), but the Carrera is gorgeous and I have been looking for another car w/ this particular color combo (maroon/saddle). To those of you that, ahem, .. traded up from Boxster, was it worth it? Also if I don't get a Carrera S, will I end up regretting it just like when I did not get a Boxster S? Finally, can someone point me to a comparison of a '06 Carrera v Carrera S? Many thanks, Jef
  17. I've a 2000 w/ a CR-220/CDR-220. Often, after pressing the button to retract the CD, it will come out then quickly return. I end up having to grab the CD from the clutches of the player before it returns. Any ideas on how to fix this? Can any reputable electronics repair shop work on a these devices? Jef
  18. I first posted this in reply to Beelzy's (8-8-08) "Smoking after short trips" post. Since we are so frequently having air oil separator (AOS) problems (and I got no response), I'm giving it its own topic. ________ I had the billowing smoke adventure about a year ago with my '00 base Boxster with 40k miles. It was the AOS, which was replaced by a local shop along with the rubber portions of the oil filler tube. Question -- my car never leaked any oil until this work was done, now it has a very slow but persistent leak. How much? After my 10 mile urban commute the spot may be about 1.5 inches in diameter, after a long hard drive the spot may be 4-6" in diameter. The shop claims the problem has nothing to do with its AOS/filler tube install, and I have not been able to see any obvious source for the leak when I get under the car. They explain that the crankcase pressure is higher now that the AOS has been replaced, and that the the leak is caused by an old seal and this higher pressure. Hmmm. I watch my oil carefully (and no longer park in my brick driveway) but have not resolved the annoying problem. I've been planning to take it to the dealer (HBL in Northern Virginia, near Washington DC), as I've a bad vibe w/ the mechanic. Any thoughts?

  20. The Stones will be a stickier tire with a fairly stiff sidewall for precise handling during performance driving. The Goodyears will run quieter, last longer and give a smoother ride, but give up a little precision in the corners. Always a tradeoff... If the tire shop has a modern alignment rig and a very experienced operator you should be fine. Make sure he is has Porsche experience. Our cars have a fairly wide range of alignment specs so talk to him about your driving style, % highway miles vs performance driving miles and track days. You will get the best tire wear if the alignment is adjusted to you. Blew the first attempt at replying, sorry. Re tire noise, how much variability is there in noise levels among high performance tires? We've a lot of concrete roads around here (Washington DC) and the B-stones are pretty noisy. Are "quieter" tires really all that much quieter?
  21. I've a 2000 base, w/ 50K mile. It's my commuter and fun weekend drives car. I'm replacing Bridgestone Potenza SO3 Pole Positions, probably w/ B-stone RE-01R but maybe w/ Goodyear F1 GS-D3. Comments? My question concerns an alignment. Would you trust a tire shop doing an alignment or should I take it to a Porsche specialist?
  22. Try 4957 or 4955 Neither worked, plus 4956. I confirmed the model and ser. numbers, they are correct. Also, I checked to see if an LED (LEDs?) is out such that what appears to be a "Y" is really an "X." Looks like it's really a "Y." Shall I run through numbers close to the two you suggest? What else? TIA Got it -- 4951. Loren, please know that as an additional way to say thanks, I'm renewing my contribution.

  24. Me too -- paint shop . I got the radio code card from the original owner, but it's blank. I feared this day would come. 2000 Boxster CDR 220 model # 4462 ser. # Y5042991 Thank you very much for the help Jef
