  1. No performance pads. Are there any that seem to give off less dust? I realize the softer OEM type will give more dust but I don't need hard ones. What do you think about turning rotors? Thanks
  2. Happy Birthday!

  3. I will need to replace the brake pads on my 99 996 c2 3.4 6spd. before long. Two questions. After market pads or OEM? It seems there were quite a few OEM manufacturers and several pads are made by the same. If within tolerance can the drilled rotors be turned successfully as it seems people just replace them.Mine are cross-drilled. Again, OEM or after market? I do not track the car and hate wheel dust, Ha, Ha. I have have seen the DIY's on here and threads just want up to date info. Thanks,Robert.
  4. I know this may stir some opinion but that's O.K. I have a 99 996 3.4 6spd with 72k miles and from the service records have the original spark plugs. It is time to change them out and not have afterthoughts. Believing some members here work in garages and may have experienced different issues, may I have some input on the best plugs and part# on the current market. Thanks, Robert.
  5. I know California had or has the strictest emissions laws in the country. Through the years I have found when buying car accessories that they would say " except California". Could someone tell me if a 99 3.4 996 sold in Ca. that year was the same as others sold around the country?
  6. If you would like to access your radiators do a search on this site for DIY on removing the front bumper and you will find your radiators. One is in the center and the other are mounted behind the A/C condensers. There is also a good video on U-Tube from a fellow in Texas. It is a good idea to clean the radiators if you have never done so and a good time to install some grille material to keep the trash out. There are also good DIY's here for that. But, going back to Loren's comment they may not be your leak and it is not common to keep adding coolant.
  7. Sorry bout that, I feel your pain.
  8. Good input from everyone. I like it. The minimum temp. was the benefit I was curious about and JFP touched on that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if the car has sufficient cooling adding a 160F stat would possibly lower normal operating temp. I realize this depends on ambient temp., load, etc. but in an ideal condition. MORE INPUT APPRECIATED.
  9. I'm getting some debate here. May I assume that my stock 99 3.4 has a 185f. Does anyone know what it closes at, realizing that it doesn't snap shut. By the way I am not having a cooling problem but do live in a warm climate and was wondering if there was an advantage, cheaper than a third radiator.
  10. Put K&N cold air intake on my 99 996 3.4 and no CEL. Big improvement in acceleration from about 4000rpm on up. Big difference! Money well spent in my book. The only problem is it sounds like a sports car when you floor it.
  11. 1999 996 C2 3.4 6spd. 72k miles and nothing major, knock on wood. New clutch @45k.
  12. Thank you for answers with reasoning. So the temp. gauge is kind of like the speedo, not quite right? Can you think of a quick and easy way to accurately measure my coolant temp. Regardless I don't like the idea of it running anywhere close to 210F. It just seemed like 160F was pretty low and was not sure if car would accept the change. Sounds like a good project to start on. From what I've read on these threads the only one available was the LN with housing. Is that correct?
  13. I have a 1999 996 C23.4 6spd. and seen a lot of threads of people going to 160f. I live in the central valley of California and it gets over 110f in summer. Cooler temps make things last longer but I couldn't find results from anyone with a California car where the government like their cars to run hot for smog. Mine stays dead on at 185f but wouldn't mind lowering it to make it last longer.Come on guys, fill me in. Thanks, Robert
  14. Does sound like a ground especially since he just had the engine out.
  15. Is it a good idea to run a 160 degree thermostat? What state do you live in as I doubt a California car would run well with one.
  16. Sounds like the solenoid is is not engaging the starter. Most starters have a washer inside that makes electrical contact to the starter motor when you turn the key. This makes the starter plunger extend engaging the starter gear and making electrical contact through a washer that makes contact against two electrical contacts inside the starter. This washer in time gets corroded and will not make contact. What you may be hearing is the solenoid extracting but thats all because there's no contact for the starter to run. On some starters there is an external contact where you can bypass the solenoid and just make the starter motor run.
  17. One final note on this one. I took out the sensor, unclipped the electrical connector off the back and removed the two torx screws holding the back of the motor housing together. This exposes the circuit board and blower shaft and a little bronze oil lite bushing. Sewing machine oil would have been perfect but not having any I used good ole Mobil One. It quieted 90%. I can hear it when it starts but not the old wind down I used to. I'll have to start taking photos. Thanks for the help guys as I'm sure this part is not cheap.
  18. Rob001 gets the prize though I found it before I read the thread. It must have a little fan in it which sucks in interior air for the sensor. The little sucker is vibrating and making noise. It is vibrating at the connector but I think I can dampen it without having to but a new one. You guys are all right! I really appreciate the help. Thanks,Robert.
  19. I got out my stethoscope and the noise is coming from behind the pass. side dash air vent. I can push on the vent and vary the noise. I guess I'll pull the vent and see what's there.
  20. Thanks for the write-up but I'm still a little confused. As I see it the fresh air blower that is shown in the pic as #4 is the one under the pollen filter. This is not what I'm hearing. What I hear is coming directly from behind the pass. side dash air bag and is not a solenoid but sounds like a fan because I can hear it wind down when I shut the key off. I looked at the other blower#4 and it's doesn't run with the controls shut off but this runs when the ignition is in the on. HELP!
  21. I took the foam insulation out from under the pass. side dash. The sound is coming from the region of the pass. dash air bag. Right in there. It is a motor sound like a fan blade slightly rubbing. Come on guys,as I get a little squemish when I have to mess with air bags. Help me out.
