  1. I am going to have to chime in on this one as well. The Boxster IS the easiest car to change the oil on that I have owned. The filter cartridge hangs down to the side of the pan and an allen wrench is all it takes to remove the plug. My wife has always commented that she would like to change the oil on a car once in her life so...... with Zero mechanical experience she changed the Boxster oil the last time. Makes me wonder if your mechanic has ever even been under a Boxster. T.
  2. I really appreciate the detailed response. I will certainly give that a shot. Thanks. Tony
  3. Hello Perhaps this has already been covered but..... My 02 Boxster S squeaks like a rusty Miata. The sound comes from the back of the top so I assume it must be one or both of the rubber seals under the hard cover. Do you guys have a recommendation on what to put on the seals or perhaps there is another common source of squeaks at the rear of the top? Thanks in advance Tony
  4. All I have been watching EBay for the last couple months looking for a updated 996 instrument cluster for my 02 986 S but have yet to find on that is not tiptronic. Any suggestions on another good source or does anyone have one for sale ? Tony
  5. All I love my Boxster S but miss having a complete set of gauges. I have considered changing over to a 911 instrument cluster to add the Oil pressure and Voltmeter but they seem to want a pretty penny for one from a wrecked car. It would seem logical to me to replace the worthless cup holders in the dash with a 1 DIN two/three gauge cluster containing high quality gauges. Does anyone know of a high quality 1 DIN mounting plate which would be suitable for the Boxster? I don't want some $5 piece of plastic, I would like a quality piece. Your help is appreciated! T. Sikes
  6. Excellent job. Nice to see someone take the time to do it right. T.
  7. This is my favorite post on the forum. Normally and understandably most of the posts are RMS, IMS and miscellaneous failures or perhaps mods. I never abuse my Boxster but then again I drive the heck out of it every day to work, on trips and soon on the track. These cars were made to be driven and it is nice to see one with that kind of mileage. Every time I worry about the engine/car being fragile I think about my buddies 1973 914 2.0 he bought new. Still drives it weekly and on long trips with 277K on the clock and she never lets him down. Best of luck to you! Tony
  8. Everyone has an opinion so take mine as just that..... I have purchased at least 14 cars like this over the years and I can assure you that in the end you would have been better off buying one in good shape. Neglected cars will always bite you in the rear and even more so with a Porsche, Lotus or Ferrari. I am sure other brands as well but I have experience with those three. In the end there will many other items in need of repair and the costs will add up. Your 4k car will be 12k+ before you know it. I just bought a 2002 Boxster S for $13K with only a couple small repair items in exceptional condition and no wrecks. I would just about guarantee you will have that much in this 97 in the next 18 months. Just my .02 cents worth. Good luck either way. Tony
  9. I think a couple of assumptions are safe to say: 1). Consumer reports is and probably will always be biased toward the Japanese car manufacturers. Their target audience is not your car enthusiast who buys with performance and passion high on their ranking. That plain Jane Toyota Camary may be boring and uninspiring but it will reliably get a librarian to work without a single mechanical failure for years. I believe that is their target audience. Normal people who just want to get to work and perhaps impress the neighbors. 2). Porches are not even remotely as reliable as most of the Asian makes when neglected. The Boxster is a fine tuned instrument which needs to be maintained and let's face it that is not one of our strong points in this country. This is an enthusiasts car which is probably best owned by an enthusiast. I personally drove a Fiat X1/9 for 7 years and 100k miles and it never let me down. On the other hand I never let it down. I will conclude with the fact that my last car was a 2002 Miata SE. I don't miss that car in the least but then again I never feared an IMS catastrophic failure either. Tony
  10. I had a simular issue with my 02 S. In my case all six of the coils had tiny cracks which caused misfires at random times. The cracks were not immediately visible so I assumed they were okay. I took the car to my local independent and he diagnosed the issue from the drivers seat. After he pointed out the cracks they were pretty obvious. So, new plugs, spark plug wells, new O-Rings and new coils and my Boxster feels new again. Tony
  11. Okay guys I hate to do this but I am going to ask the question..... As the owner of a new to me 2002 Boxster S I have been reading as much as I can about the car, learning where everything is located and getting an idea of what maintenance it will need for the next year. I seem to come across many comments on Boxster RMS failures but more concerning are all the posts on Intermediate shaft failures. I am an ex-Fiat/Ferrari mechanic so I bought the car figuring that if I can keep 70-80s era Fiats on the road my Boxster S should be a breeze. I am obsessive about maintenance on my vehicles but do use them as intended. My 944 Turbo provided years of spirited and reliable driving and had 150K on the clock when I sold her. The maintenance was certainly more expensive than a Honda but nothing outrageous especially since most of it was performed in my garage. I read somewhere that an estimated 10% of all IMS bearings fail by 90K miles usually causing catastrophic engine failure. That seems like an alarming failure rate. So you sage Boxster owners, steer me straight. What are the opinions of you long term owners? Tony
  12. I should have read your instructions better! I tried 4951 which worked perfectly. Thank You! Tony Try 4949 or 4947 If you have not already read this FAQ - please do so... Lost Radio Code - FAQ, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST
  13. I tried 4949 - Nothing then 4947 - Nothing and finally 4949 again and just got the "Wait". Not sure it matters but the car is a 2002 Boxster S. I really appreciate the help. Do you think it needs to go to the dealer? Regards Tony Try 4949 or 4947 If you have not already read this FAQ - please do so... Lost Radio Code - FAQ, PLEASE READ THIS FIRST
