  1. Thanks Loren! For Item 29, the support bracket, the part shows up as this from a Google search: This is correct? Would you also have the parts list for the license plate for the rear? Turns out it's also not factory/OEM.
  2. Hi Renntech, I have a 2004 996 C2 coupe. It has provisions for the front plate, but noticed it does not use a genuine Porsche front license plate bracket. I went over a bump and the plate fell off so I'm missing a few pieces. I'd like to take this opportunity to use a factory license plate frame and hardware etc. The front bumper has two holes but it's missing what I think are the plugs? I'm not entirely sure what hardware I need to use a full factory setup. By law, I need the front plate so I can't avoid this. Could someone please help? Thanks! Mike
  3. Thanks for the replies, everyone. This is very reassuring. Much appreciated! Coming from two BMWs as they are known for their weak cooling systems, does the 996 suffer from the same problems such as cracked coolant tanks, exploding fan blades, and cracked hoses? I will most certainly top up the tank with some distilled water and monitor from there. Should I fill it up all the way or just to the "MIN" line? Thanks again!
  4. Hey folks, I've got a 2004 996 C2 in manual transmission. Current mileage is just over 34,xxx miles / 55,xxx kilometres. I have owned the vehicle since March 1, 2014 (second owner - this is my first Porsche.) I noticed the coolant is a few millimeters below the "MIN" line at the coolant overflow tank. What's interesting too is that this coolant is...yellow/clear? Does anybody recognize what brand this coolant is or if something is terribly wrong? I don't have any cooling issues whatsoever. The coolant temp needle sits a hair over "180" when fully warm and never moves further. Looking through the service history, there is no indication the coolant was ever changed/flushed. Pictures are below. Any suggestions on how to proceed (if necessary) and details on this funny looking coolant is appreciated. Thanks! Mike (I believe if you click the image, it will appear in higher resolution.)
  5. Hi folks, Just wondering among the Renntech community, what is the general consensus of changing batteries on the 996? I have a MY04 C2. The battery has for sure been replaced (Interstate) however, I am unsure of when as the in-service sticker was not marked off. Seeing that the car is now 10 years old, is it safe to replace the battery every five years? The car at one point did sit for a while (prior to my ownership) so I had to throw on a charger to make sure it was up to snuff. Alternator and electronics are okay. Battery gauge shows 13.8-14.0v on start up, then 13.5-8v after a bit. Then what I think is about 13.2 - 13.5v when the car is fully warm with AC and headlights on after a good 20 minutes in stop and go urban traffic. Thanks in advance! Mike
  6. Again, if any of the lines on the window work, all should work unless somewhere in the window lines there is a break in the ribbon. The window grid is a simply DC heater tape with current flowing through it, it has a single electrical connection on each side. I would suggest you get a magnifying glass and closely examine the lines that are not heating, some where on them is a break in the tape. Thanks. I will take a closer look (no pun intended) and report back. :) I have also read you can further pin point the break in the line/ribbon using a multimeter, is this correct?
  7. I'm surprised only 3 or 4 lines work, which makes me question if there is a bigger problem at hand. In the event the grid lines are presumably okay, is there anything else to check? Is there a plug within the pillar that connects to the rear window?
  8. Bump. Any suggestions on where to begin troubleshooting? I can't seem to find any "visible" breaks or scratches on the lines. I'm not sure why or how only 3 or 4 lines work. There's got to be something more. Perhaps a plug I can trace it back to or relay? Thanks in advance!
  9. Sorry, I should have been more specific. Yes, I was referring to the cam wear pads. My 996 is a 2004 model year with a December 2013 build date.
  10. Oil selection and shorter intervals will help, but these wear pads should be considered maintenance items, not unlike the brake pads or clutch disc. Eventually, they will need changing. Does this apply to the later 996 models with the 3.6L engine?
  11. Another member on Rennlist mentioned he was running 285s in the rear without any problems on his factory 18" wheels. I have not seen any pictures nor has he reported issues of the tires rubbing against the fenders. Edit: i should mention, he was running Michellin PSS tires both as a daily and track tire.
  12. Sorry to steal the thread, but did a search and this thread popped up. When changing/replacing the battery, will the radio require a code when the new battery is installed? The previous owner lost the radio card and factory manuals during a cross-country move. I want to be sure it will not affect anything when I replace the battery, which I have reason to believe is 5+ years old. Edit: Mine is a MY04 996 with Bose system and Becker CDR-22/23?
  13. Oh yes, completely forgot about that one. I actaully have them on my other non-Porsche car and I'm very happy with them too. However, I've heard people complaining that they wear fast but I have no way to confirm since I haven't put enough miles on them. I currently have the Hankook V12 Evo on my car (the came with the car from the previous owner.) Here are my thoughts: 1. Great in the rain, especially here in rainy Pacific West Coast. 2. They perform "okay" - for the money and compared to other tires in its price range 3. You get a lot of road feedback. You feel all the bumps, nooks and cracks on the road. Gets kind of annoying. 4. They do wear out somewhat quick. Friends of mine were running them on their M3, S2000, and Subaru STi. There's still plenty of tread left and it's a daily driver (c'est la vie) but if and when I need to replace them, I'd get something else completely and not get the V12s ever again.
  14. Follow up #2: I spoke too soon. Turns out only about 3 or 4 lines work. Any ideas on where else or what to look for?
  15. Gary, I recently had the same problem. I purchased a Durametric cable and pulled code 4460 - Pressure Sensor. I did the basics first - checked the brake light switch = no go. Check battery voltage - it was low. I charged it up over night and it has held a good charge since (previous owner did not drive the car much.) So far, so good. I haven't had any fault codes pop up - yet! Get the fault code pulled first and report back. From my searches, Loren has posted a comprehensive troubleshooting guide in several posts and I don't think it has failed anyone to my knowledge. Good luck!
  16. Hey folks, I have a 2004 996 coupe. During heavy rain, I noticed the rear defogger / defroster working, however, maybe 3 or 4 lines work properly. Mileage is 53,000km / 33,000 miles. The rear defogger light stays on as it should until about 10 - 12 minutes (I forget exactly.) What can be the problem? Anybody have this issue? Thanks!
