  1. do you mean too high for the wheel or too high for the replacement part? I thought getting a used wheel for $300 was reasonable.
  2. I bought a tiptronic steering wheel from Road and race, inc. so I could hook up the steering wheel buttons to my stereo for volume control. When it arrived, the right tiptronic button was broken (not fixable). I called Road and Race and he offered to take the wheel back, but says that the button is a $300 piece (the same price that I paid for the whole wheel). I can't find the part number on the renntech system. It must be an old number. It says "993.347.854.00" on the part. Does anyone have an updated number? Does anyone have an old wheel lying around that they'd sell me the button from? Here is the broken button: (edit - resized image - Loren)
  3. You do NOT have to wait to put it on to find out if it works. You can just lean it up next to the car (carefully) and plug in the wing's wiring, then turn on the car and press the wing up/down button to test it.
  4. Do you guys think that I'm nuts to say that I think the 996 Turbo looks better?
  5. All I get is a red X when I click on the link. Also: "dial up guys"? Do we really think that anyone still has a dialup connection? I hope not.
  6. I'd be interested in knowing if the "lowered seat" option, available on the 996, is actually a different seat, or perhaps a different bracket. Anyone got any info here?
  7. The biggest obvious problem is that i'll be stuck somewhere if/when I get a flat. (Just to state the obvious). Where I am going with this is: what does a 997 owner do when they have a flat? Is there an airpump that could get you a few miles? My 996 already has an airpump for the spare...at least I think that is what that thing is in the trunk. Does a 997 owner call Porsche and they come and tow him/her? Would they tell a 996 owner that they are supposed to have a spare and to take a hike? I am looking for some more room in my front trunk and can't stand having only enough room for a couple of loaves of bread in the trunk. My last Porsche was a Boxster and the front trunk was much larger and the back trunk was great.
  8. You are up against a HUGE challenge here. The problem is that your car has a "MOST" fiberoptic audio system which means that you'll have to change all of your speakers and amps. I think that the spacer (that fits around the head unit) that you'll need to have made will be the easy part. I'm having a system put in sometime soon (maybe this week) which is an Eclipse AVN head unit with all new amps and speakers with a bluetooth phone kit, but the price of it is absolutely ridiculous.
  9. You may actually need both. You will probably need some kind of a wiring kit to minimize cutting the wires that go to the speakers/amps. I have heard that when you remove the stereo, there can be problems with the alarm system, because it looks for the stereo and can't find it. I don't think that this is true, because I've driven my car with my stereo dead and this would be similar to having it stolen/removed. Here is what I'd do: if it is cheap, just buy it and throw it in there. If it's expensive, try it first without it.
  10. What is a DSG? Does it just shift faster or is there some other bene to it?
  11. Who knows. Did we know that the 928 and the 944 were going to die (before the last year or two of their production)? If the Boxster dies (and I don't think it will anytime soon) then they will probably realize that they need a less expensive (than the 911) model in the line-up and make something similar. Just my opinion.

I'm okay with it. two things: The reason they're selling more SUV's is because there are so many more people out there who need a vehicle that can hold 4+people than people that are willing to spend over 50K for a rig that can only fit two people and a picnic basket's size worth of stuff (and get it there quickly). If this allows them to continue to produce other cars...better cars...maybe a 4-door sedan (The Panamera)... then great. Go Porsche.

  14. I'm just going to have to move when I can. My neighborhood won't allow carports. It looks like I'll have to store the Porsche for a month or two this winter so I can get the other two cars in the garage. I drive the X5 and my s.o. has a car as well. (In answer to the "how many cars can you drive at a time".) Thanks for all of the help.

Or... you could just read the Porsche TSB 1/05 9662 Design Key (dated Jul 29, 2005) in the TSB section... ;) The TSB is here in the Carrera (996) TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins): http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?&...rder=asc&st=200 I believe that when they say that it doesn't work for a convertible, they are talking about a Non-US version that may have a third button on the remote for the top.
  16. yeah, I thought of putting one or both of the cars on a lft. But that seems to be too much of a hassle: You pull it on the lift just right then you get out and press a button and it goes up, then you very carefully put another car right under it. The beauty of the attic idea is that you have one big lift that you can just pull onto and you raise it up. Then you drive it further into the attic wherever you want to park it. I've thought about it and I realize that it wouldn't work. It would probably be easier and less expensive to dig a basement under my house and use a lift to get cars into the basement. Anybody ever heard of digging a basement under a house that is already built? (Ha!)
  17. I promise that I'm not smoking anything. My garage can't be expanded towards the property line, or into the house. I think I just need to move. Here is what it looks like now:
  18. Here is my situation: I've got a 50 y.o. house that I don't want to move out of. It is perfect with one exception: the garage. I've got two cars and will soon have three, but the garage is so small that I can't even open the passenger door on the Porsche. I have to back out for someone to get in. What I really need to do is to move to a bigger house. But I thought of something this morning...notice that I did NOT say "something good". I once heard of a guy who had a lift in his garage. He could pull a car into his garage and then lower the lift and drive the cars into his basement. What a great idea. I have no basement. I don't think I could dig one very easily (joke). What about adding considerable support to the floors and expanding the house to a two-story. Then I could use a lift to raise the cars and park them on the second floor. I don't think it would be feasible in a 50 y.o. house, but I'd love to hear about it if someone has ideas. If you think I'm crazy, then lets chalk it up to being up late and getting up too early (for work).
  19. It depends on my mood. Of course, I wait until it warms up, but I usually keep it between 4-6k when I want to have some fun. If I'm just cruising, then I guess it is down around 2500-3k. If I'm in a neighborhood, I put the PSE on quiet, but otherwise it is on loud. I like the sound of that engine.
  20. jeez, there's gotta be an easier way. Anybody? Honesty, if you have the tools in hand itll take under a minute. But seeing as you've never done it before itll probably take a bit longer. The picture loren posted shows the piece you're left with after you remove the 4 screws. Curious to know what how you plan to deal with the rest of the empty space? Actually, I'm thinking of cutting out the middle of the cupholder and cutting down the V1 Display...then mount the display in the hole in the middle of the cupholder. Just an idea at this point, though.
  21. I am thinking of putting my V1 readout in the drink holder. I'm talking about the drinkholder that is at the very top of the center stack....just above the heater controls....The one that comes out on the right side and then slides out further to expose two cupholders. thanks, navin
