  1. I had the same issue, the pnp rear speakers were too quite run from the HU. I have M490 but on a 00 box. harvey sells a 2 channel amp for just the rears, I got that and it makes a HUGE difference.
  2. Todd, What header/cat/muffler setup did you use for the 3.4? I bought the setup from Steve Timmons at Instant G and have had major fitament issues with the headers. I may need to go with another setup.
  3. you can get the aasco unit from engine builders supply in nevada. I got mine from there.
  4. I have done the swap to Box S brakes on my 00 box. I did it to upgrade braking to match the 3.4l 996 engine I am putting in. The fronts are a straight swap. The S calipers bolt right on, and the rotors as well. The S rotors, in addition to being cross drilled are also larger in diameter, and wider than the stock S. The rears are more of a pain. Probably to get a significant improvement in braking, you could just do the fronts and leave the rears stock, but I didn't want to leave the rears stock for the sake of completeness (or some may say obsession!!). The rear rotors are also wider and larger in diameter, and they don't fit with the calipers. When you bolt on the rotor, the caliper does not clear it. There is also a problem with the backing plate, which is too small to fit the rotor as well. So, from here you can go two ways, Way 1 would be to change out the wheel bearing carriers to those of an S, expensive and expensive. You may need to change out some of the control arms as well, I am not sure. I know that the S has strengthened rear control arms, as well as larger bearing carriers. Way 2 is to do what I did, which is to buy the very cleaver kit made by FVD which provides a larger backing plate, and spacers that go between the caliper and the bearing carrier. These spacer plates go between the caliper and the boss on the bearing carrier, and provide enough standoff so that the calipers can make it around the rotors. You also need to buy the parking brakes shoes, springs, and tension adjuster of the S, which all fit very nicely with the revised backing plate. Hope this helps
  5. oak, My shop is doing the reprogram to a 996 for free. I think pretty much you have to do this to make the swap work. The extra cost ($1100) is for GIAC to do a reprogram to get the last 15 or so hp and to make better use of the high flow exhaust system. Its a lot of moolah, especially at the end of the project with the swap fund is nearing its end. But I probably will. If I do, then I will be risking having no teething problems, cause there wont be any money left to fix things with!! Ah well, theres always credit cards, right? Oak, what did you do with the intake side of things?? Did you go with the EVO intake for the Boxster? How did you solve the boxsters intake tube not making it to the stock airbox? I am assuming that I cant use the stock boxster airbox cause it probably wont flow enough air since it is designed for a 2.7l engine capacity.
  6. That is pretty much my understanding as well, no bulb tint will in any way be able to match a HID. It just looks like a blue or purple halogen. To get a "matching" xenon look from the fogs, they need to upgrade to a HID system. Now how to do that is the real question.....
  7. I have thought about doing the same thing, but I think it may be very difficult. Here are the problems as I see them: 1) There is very little room for the 2nd ballast. As you can see, the ballast for the main light sticks to the back of the light housing, and it pretty much takes up all the avaliable room. I am not sure where you could fit another ballast. Maybe you could mount it somewhere inside the fender or in the front trunk. 2) The power supply for the ballast comes internally from the housing itself I think. There is a plug in the housing that slides in to a receptacle as you slide the housing into the fender. To power the 2nd ballast, you would need to get power from somewhere, but I am not sure how you would tap into the housing to get it. perhaps you could run power directly from the battery or some other place to avoid messing up the housing. Of course I am no electrical wiz, so maybe the problems I mention are really no big deal to solve. I agree it would be a nice mod to have HID fogs that match the main lights. There has to be some electrical genius on this board who has somoe ideas.
  8. Yes the swap is being done in a local shop. I can do simple things like change fluids, do brakes, change plugs etc, but theres no way I would do an engine swap myself. The labor was quoted to me at 30 hours (and they said this was probably a bit "fat"), but that didn't include adding the center radiator, because I decided to add it after they had given me the estimate. My shop has already done 2 of these conversions, so they felt comfortable estimating the hours accurately. So figure for labor 30 hrs plus or minus x whatever your shop rate is for the labor cost. Yes the waiting is killing me. Esp since my shop is a small 2 guy shop that caters mostly to race cars (especially theirs!!), so they are always very busy and street cars tend to be last in line. But I know it is worth waiting for.
  9. I am in the middle of the conversion right now to my 00 Box. I got a used 3.4 from a 01 Carerra with 31k miles. I am adding the center radiator. Since I needed a new clutch anyway I added the AASCO Lt Wt flywheel. I also got the "custom" Instant G header/high flow cats/muffler setup for this conversion, which based on my research makes a big difference to the final performance of the swap. If you consider what I have got back from selling the 2.7l engine & GHL muffler I had, I am in for a little over 12k. I am also getting some new Pilot Sports since my rear tires are way past the wear bars, and I am seriously considering the GIAC reprogram. This costs $1100 (ouch!) as will the tires, but of course neither item is required for the swap. Cant WAIT to get her back from the shop. I will probably add the FVD sport camshafts this Xmas to the package as well. It should be good for 325-330 at the fly. Thats enough for me. So for my initial 25k purchase price 2 years ago (with 31k miles) plus another 13k I have a very nice Boxster with more hp than a new 987S, and equal hp to a new carerra for 38k. To me this is a good deal, considering you get mid engine handling, 986 looks, and a unique custom car. But then again I never would have gotten a 987 cause I don't like their looks. The revised air intake and fog lights ruin it for me. Hope this helps.
  10. thanks for all the info guys. I appreciate your experience on the swap. I think the center radiator sounds like cheap insurance......I think I will do it. But then I need a boxster S or 996 front fascia for the opening. Anybody got a Boxster S front fascia for sale cheap??
  11. my car just went in for the conversion...questions did you guys add the front radiator or can you get by with the 2 boxster radiators.....I have been told the 996's with the tiptronic didn't have the center radiator anyway did you upgrade your clutch.....my clutch is near its end and it was suggested going to a lt wt fly and new clutch stuff, pressure plate, throw out bearing, etc. It appears the boxster and 3.4 996 have the same exact clutch, but the 996 has a different (stronger?) pressure plate for the increased torque.....getting the lt wt fly is an added expense, but since the tranny is already off it changing it out does not add any labor. I also could go with a very slightly used 996 clutch & pressure plate that the mech needs to get off his shelf for a good price.... and finally what did you guys get for your old engine? I have an offer already but it seems a bit low.....but then again I have no idea what a 54k 2.7 would be worth... TIA :clapping:
  12. I put on the Kumho's about 2 months after I bought the car the Pzeros on it were really worn. The Kumhos have been pretty good, not great. They are currently ready for replacement on the rears after about 11k miles. The fronts are still fine. I had kumhos on my 3 series, they were ok, but I now have the Michelin Pilots XGT?, their all season tire, and they are WAY better. Better in wet and dry, and much better wear. As always, get the best tires you can afford. I will get the Pilot sports here in the near future for the Boxster.
  13. Got his rear speaker setup off Ebay, and later added the amp....and after the 90 days expired the amp died. Let Harvey know about it (not even asking for anything new, just for some help on what went wrong) and he sends me a brand spanking new amp. And I didn't even bother to send in my registration card either. Turns out the amp had an internal short, and the new amp now works perfectly. Thanks Harvey for going above and beyond. If you guys are considering buyiny his rear speaker package, do it. Get the amp too. The system sounds like a million bucks, and Harvey is a real stand up guy. Pleasure to do business with a guy like that.
  14. Interesting how another 00 has the same problem......hey all you people with 00 cars......any trouble with the readings of the gas gauge?????
