  1. 100% sure....not. The only thing I did was unplug the pad sensors and tie wrap them without tension away from the suspension and rotors. I will check and make sure the connections are OK. I did change the oil with the car still in the stands. Two of the calipers (the back ones) still don't have the pads because I am still waiting for teh vibration dampers. Accidentally, I touched the brake pedal when I started the engine after the oil change and this is when the ABS light came on. When I plugged the Durametrics, I found all these carzy fault codes including the one for the throtle position sensor. I installede cat bypasses and since then the check engine light has been on. The throtle fault could have been there for a while before the ABS light came on. You think that touching the brake pedal with no pads on 2 calipers could have triggered the speed sensor faults? Anorak, thank you very much for your help and the pics. Turns out that after running the cr everything was fine and the ABS light went off.
  2. :offtopic: I stoppped by the BMW dealer today to return the big bow borrowed to surprise the wife. I took a seat in the new Z4 Coupe - much smaller than an M5! The local paper's auto writer called it the "Cayman killer" at $20K less and 255 HP. I can't believe I can buy a brand new 2007 Z4 for the same price I paid for my 99 C2 three years ago. Humm.... Someone dropped him on his head as a child :beer: MY99 C2 82,000. Bought it with 78,000. Replaced clutch, light weight fly wheel, redid exhaust (headers,muffler and cat by pass). No oil leaks or oil comsumption. Unfurtunately, I was not aware of the IMS issue and was not told about it wen the clutch was changed so the IMS upgrade was not done. Scared to death about it failing
  3. Have a C2 1999 just like yours! Even same color and tail. I am getting the TPS sensor 1 signal implausible code. The wiring is checked at the connection point of the sensor in the engine compartment? Found a source selling this sensor for $80 (Bosch OEM). Thanks for your constant, expeert help. I am learnig quite a bit and enjoying. Anything to look for when removing and replacing this sensor?
  4. I would replace them. They are inexpensive (relatively). The rear ones require 30 mm (4 for both back calipers) and 28 mm (also 4 total). Don't forget to cange the pins and pad holders also. Rotors, pads, pins, and dampers changed. Used Hawks HPS and removed the pad wear sensors. Also painted the calipers red with white PORSCHE decals. Usd Duplicolor spray caliper paint and painted them while still attached to the brake lines (using a small rope to support them while painting). Flawless look after applying the high temp clear. Hope the paint holds well. Little bit of squelling on one of the rear wheels Hope it stops
  5. Hi everyone. Have failure codes on the TPS on my Durametric reader. The codes are P1121 code 430 and Durametric says its the throttle position sensor. I looked at the codes in the forum and could not find the P1121. There were some codes pertaining to the throttle pedal posiiton sensor. Is the code that I am getting related to the pedal or the sensor in the throttle body? Any help will be appreciated. Need to know what sensor to replace.
  6. If you started the engine with the car on stands the wheels or hubs would most likely have turned at diffent speeds! this would trigger the ABS light. As Loren has said do a test drive should clear quite quickley Berny and Loren, thanks for your help. I checked all connections and everything is tight. Will ride it for a FEW miles and check again. I already reset the faults.

  8. Can anyone give me pointers on how to remove and replace the throtle position sensor on a 1999 996? Is there only one sensor? Any particualr procedure afetr the new one is replaced? Also, I just changed the rotors and pads (I disconnected and tie-wrapped the pad sensors) and have a fault on the Durametrics showing the speed sensors of both rear wheeels and the front passenger wheel as defective. This was not present before I changed the pads. i did not touch the speed sensors. Any clues?

  10. I learned a trick from 944 racers - they wired in a 2.9 Ohm 1/4 watt resistor - it tricked the system into thinking the airbag as still there. It worked on my 986S. I did it a long time ago, and don't remember the details, but with the help of my electrical engineer next door neighbor, we made a resistor of these specs, and used it to complete the circuit that would normally be completed by the airbag itself. Thank you ericinboca. Very helpful. Will look into this. Hope to meet you at one of the track events or PCA evenrts soon. I live in Key West.
  11. Hi everyone! Im looking at the pssibility os swapping my OEM steering wheel on my 1999 996 to a Momo wheel. I have been told that there is a hub that allows for deactivation of the airbag light when you make this swap. Have not been able to find it after extensive websearching. Has anyone seen this? If not, is there a way to disable the airbag ligt after this swap? Will the side and passenge airbags be operational if this modification can be done? Thanks for any help I can get.
  12. I installed the 997 SS yesterday on my 1999 996. The installation was easy and straightforward. The hardest part was the console removal. I find the shifter to be more precise and significantly shorter in the trows. First gear requires a healthy push when the car is cold. One of my favorite modifications. Got mine from Suncoast ($430). Honestly, anyone can do this at home! I am no mechanic and this is my first 9996. Just remember to mark the position of teh cables before removing teh old shifter and place them precisely in teh same location on the new one.

  14. Hi everyone! I know this is a much discussed topic but I wanted to tell all about my experience with the installation of the factory SS in my 996. I used the factory kit (the 997 version) because of its simplicity in installation. I have zero mechanical expertise (except for simple oil changes) and was reluctant to tackle this job thinking that I would mess up the gear settings during intallation. If you are riding the fence on doing this job, take the plunge. It is very easy to do. The hardest part was removing the center console. Just make sure you mark the placement of the shifting cables before you disconect anything and you are set! I am very pleased with the results. Shifting is dramatically shortened and feels more precise. It is a little more difficult to engage first gear when the car is cold but it loosens up after a few miles. I bought the shifter from Suncoast ($430). No modifications whatsover where needed. Just plug and play. This has been a morale booster for a me being inexperienced in mechanical tasks. The kit does not come with instructions.
  15. If your light is currently not on just tie them back. Otherwise determine which wheel has an open circuit and snip and connect the cables. I would recommend soldering them and and then use heat shrink to protect them from weather. The light is not on so I will just tie the sensor and save the drilling on the Hawks HPS pads.   16. Hello everyone! Quick question...If I tie-wrap the pad sensor cable and do not connect it to the pads, will the warning light go on in the dash? I read in another section of our forum that you can snip and connect the cables closing the circuit so that the light will not go on disabling the sensor. The car is a 1999 Carrera. Thanks again!!   17. I will be doing the rotors and brakes this week. Loren posted a lint of a video describing the process and, for all the money in the world, I can not find it again. I need the size of the bolts needed to insert in the drilled holes in the hub to help separate the rotor from the axle. Anyone has this info? Thanks guys! George
  18. I read that overhauled or new engines should be kept at or below 4,000 RPM for 2,000 miles. Just getting ready for my turn to fork the big bucks in a new engine (80,500 miles !)
  19. Do you think it will fit if I keep the offset at 50 mm (what the manual recommends for the 18x7)? Thanks for all the help...you guys have been very helpful! This is my second Porsche but the first one in which I am really involved.
  20. Will a 18 x 8.5 wheel fit in the front of a 996 that has been lowered 1 inch without protruding form the wheel well? Saw some cheap wheels with this meassurement. I would use the recommended tire size in the manual. The offset can be speciofied at time of order.
  21. Thanks to all. I guess I doin't have a replaced engine. My serial n umber is M960166W08957. Not sue if this is god or bad. Was hoping to have a replaced engine with all themodiicartions addressing all the sudden failures. Dont' know what to think. Should have educated myself before buying.
  22. I own a 1999 Carrera and would like to know if this engine was ever replaced. I am the sixth owner of this vehicle and the documentation is very poor. Previous owners didn't even registered the engine seriaL number in the service manual. Does anyone know of any web site I can visit with my current VIN number and engine serial number to determine if this engine was ever exchanged?
