  1. 99-996 Sorry I sold the rebuilt starter last week. I still have the original starter. If you are interested in it PM me. As for replacing one, it is not too hard. You have to take out the airbox and the throttle body to get access. takes a 13mm and a 15mm socket as I remember. Also have to take off the serpetine belt I think this is a 24mm socket). Then a couple of long extensions. The nuts holding on the wires are pretty easy, although the rubber cover and be a pain to hold back. The upper bolt to the crankcase is pretty easy. The lower bolt you have to go at from under the alternator and power steering pump. It is a pretty straingt shot but hard to see it. I bought a long (24") extension for this based on a DIY somewhere, but it turned out to be too long to get in, hit on the body at the back of the car. So I used a couple of 12" extensions, going in one at a time. Don't drop the nuts or bolts, it can be a bear to find them.
  2. WHAT?????? No DME. Where did you buy the car? And didn't you test drive it before you bought it. This is one of the strangest stories I have heard in a while. You could also try some of the wreckers, Oklahoma Foreign, DC Auto, LA Porsche Dismantlers (be creful of these guys).
  3. That is the left side, front of the engine. The power steering connections are on the right side, back of the engine.
  4. 13mm socket will fit the bolts on the crankcase. Probably won't need WD40 or anythng like that on a car as new as yours. I had no trouble on my 2000 996 that has been through 8 slaty winters. The bolts that hold the headers to the cats could be more difficult. On my car these were really rusted in. Again, on your newer car they should probably come off pretty easy. Are you missing the old 996? :P
  5. Sometime internal baffles come loose in the mufflers cans, but this is more of a rattle, and comes from the muffler, not the engine. If you are hearing a ticking that comes and goes, it is probably not the muffler. The lifters are hydraulic, using the oil pressure. So when the oil is cools there is more pressure, when it gets hot, lower pressure at idle, so sometimes the lifters will click, particularly with 0W-40. Increase the revs and the oil pressure goes up. I used to think that 1999porsche911 was obsessed with his dislike of Mobil 1 0W-40, but now I tend to agree with him. I don't run 0W-40 of any type anymore, and have switched to Castrol 5W-40, or 10W-40 in hotter weather. I know my dealer and most others always used Mobil 1 0W-40, but in the early days of the 996 Mobil 1 was one of the few synthetic oils out there, and I think Porsche had some sort of a deal with them. I was recently surprised when I went back and read the manual that came with my car (2000 C4 Cab) and saw that there was no provision for 0W-40 oil for any temp range!!
  6. I recently had a similar problem with my car. The starter would click, but not turn over the car. First I replaced the battery with a brand new battery. Did not fix it. Then I replaced the electrics in the ignition/key switch. Did not fix it. Then I put in a rebuilt starter, Did not fix it. Then I got a brand new starter. Did not fix it!!! Then, at the suggestio of another owner, I checked the ground strap on the right side of the engine, goes from the front of the head to the body. Took off the strap, cleaned all the surfaces, reinstalled it. PROBLEM GONE!! So the first thing I would do it to take off the right rear tires and check the gound strap, easy to do and a cheap fix if that is it. Just sold the rebuilt starter.
  7. Best guess is the seal around the solinoid on the VarioCam advance mechanism. This is located directly above where you are showing the oil coming down. Not an uncommon leak to have and it can be easily sealed.
  8. The Bosch battery I have in my car does not have a vent.
  9. Is the engine turnin gover with the starter? If not could be bad starter, bad battery or bad ground strap. If the engine is turning over but not starting it could be a bad pulse sender, but that is only guessing. Do you have a Durametric or access to one. This would give you codes that might help.
  10. Pet shows different AOS' for the 996 and 986, I think there is a difference in clearances, etc. Function is the same.
  11. I have been having a ticking sound from my 00 since I reinstalled the engine after fixing a cracked head. Recently dropped the engine again to check the lifters. I spoke to Flat 6 and others regarding how to test the lifters. All said that you should be able to slightly compress the little pison on the underside of the lifters, some movement/compression should be there, only a couple of mm's. So when I had my lifters out I did this test and found that about half had some movement and half were "locked down." Based on this I decided to get a set of new lifters. They arrived this morning, brand new in the packages from INA. And much to my surprise there is no movement in any of the new lifters. Now they have never been in the engine with pressurized oil, which is what is supposed to expand them, but I was surprised to find no movement in a brand new set.
  12. I bought my Durametric 3 or 4 years ago when they first started selling them I think I paid either $159 or $179, I would have to look it up, BUT WHAT A DEAL!!! Glad I went for it back then. I have continuosly updated the software, the updates are free and they have been great with support. They did just release a Beta version of new software, and the website says it won't work with the old style cable like I have. New cables will be $150. I will have to wait and see what the functional differences are. I know between my car and my buddies car, it has paid for itself many times over. The local dealer won't even hook up their device for less than an hours labor, even if it is a 5 minute fix.
  13. Loren - Thanks for your quick response. We are going to check for leaks and clean the MAF. See if this helps.
  14. Workng on my firends 2000 Cab. The Durametric showed the following errors P1128 Porsche code 360, Oxygen sensing adaptation, idle bank 1 P1130 Porsche code 361, Oxygen sensing adaptation, idle bank 2 How do you tell which sensors are bad? The pre-cat or after cat, and I am assuming that bank 1 is 1-3 and bank 2 is 4-6. We have cleared the codes in the past but they come back after awhile.
  15. The Bosch replacement is a 94R730B. I am not sure if this is the PepBoys number of the Bosch number. I paid $139.00, got a $14 discount at the time of purchase and a $10 mail in rebate. They also have a $12 core charge, but I gave them my old battery and got this back. Hope this helps.
  16. PepBoys has a Bosch direct replacement for about $130. However, if you go there take in your existing battery. The book cross-reference is for the wrong one. But they have a Bosch that is the same size as the OEM battery and less than half the price that the dealer will charge.
  17. I have a couple of starters if you are interested in one. I was having what I thought were starter problems in my 2000 Cab after I put the engine back in. The starter would only click, but not turn the car over. First replaced the battery, which seemed to help for a short period of time. then replaced the ignition switch, which did nothing. Then put in a rebuilt starter, still same problem. Then put in a new starter, same problem. Then on the advice of another owner I checked the engine ground strap, cleaned the connections and everything works fine, this was the problem from the start. So now I have the original starter and a rebuilt starter. I will take $50 for the orignal or $125 for the rebuilt, includes shipping within the continental US. PM me if you are interested.
  18. If you have oil in the coolant or vice versa it will start looking like pudding or sludge with a yellowish color. At first it may be just a few drops in the coolant tank, but if this is the problem it will become more apparant quickly. The oil will start to look like chocolate milk and you should be able to see it on the dipstick, on the filler cap and in the filler tube. Do a search on the intermix problem and you will find lots of photos
  19. Are there any traces of coolant in you oil or oil in your coolant? Easy to look and this will tell you alot. Look even before you take it to a mechanic.
  20. You know a dealership in the Chicago area with labor rates of only $90/hr.?? WOW! The Porsche Exchange was $159/hr. last time I checked. Even most indy's are more than $90/hr. Where are you taking your car?
  21. Had the same issue after I had the engine out of my car and put it back in. Went to the smog station the next day and the OBD was not ready. Drove the car for a hundred miles or so and them went back and passed with flying colors. Just give it a day or so and put on some miles, it will probably be OK.
  22. Clips into a holder on the passenger side of the front bumper, in the intake area.
  23. I would have a lawyer call the other parties insurance company, they are at fault. You can also keep an eye on Ebay, there are lots of rear lids/spoilers, etc. that are listed on a regular basis and the whole assembly usually goes for $300-$500.
