  1. Gristy, There may be people that have liked the Cat Bypass but on my car they were terrible. I spoke to many Porsche Techs and they told me the car would simply not run properly without at least 50 cell cats. The exhaust system was designed with the cats in mind. Removing them changes that design. The aftermarket people will tell you that a normally aspirated cars will benefit from the "lack" of back pressure. From what I'm told (and my own experience) that's a bunch of crap. I would take the advice from the Boxter owners on this site and see what they have found to be the best products for your car. Good luck and I'm glad to help (if I did.) Take care! Phillipj
  2. Gristy, Whatever you decide regarding mufflers do not install the cat bypass pipes!! I made that mistake on my 996. Total loss of low end torque and a really awful exhaust note (sounded like a Honda). I returned them to the company for a refund after much complaining. Don't let the aftermarket companies fool you into believing you will get power gains from Mufflers and Cat Bypass. I have Fabspeed mufflers on my 996 and I love them. I have no idea about their mufflers for a Boxter though. It is a really personal thing regarding sound. Try to find a car near you (if possible) with the mufflers you are thinking about so you can hear the sound in person. Just wanted to save you some grief and some cash. Phillipj
  3. Kim, I also had very bad motorcycle racing accident when I was a young man. Pretty much almost tore my lower leg off. 2 & 1/2 years in a cast and 7 surgeries including bone grafts skin graft and leg legthening procedure. I feel your pain. Just hang in there and you will be back in your toy. Just don't do anything to set you back. Best wishes and hope you have a speedy recovery! Phillipj P.S. My leg works fine (although has many battle scars!)
  4. Peer, Don't forget to replace the brake damper plates ( 2 per wheel) (prevents squeaking) , tension spring kit (1 kit for 2 wheels) and caliper bolts (2 per wheel.) These are inexpensive and should be replaced at the time of doing pads and rotors. These replacements will prevent you from the possibility of having to do the job over again. I did my fronts on my 996 and paid about $470 for everything including shipping online (all OEM) The work perfect and no squeak. http://www.trademotion.com Good luck with your brakes! Phillipj
  5. I agree that that is a nice system but why?? 6k? That you will never see again? I don't see the sense when the money would be better spent on a chip and mufflers. Just my opinion and I respect yours as well. Phillipj
  6. I have the B & M in my 99 Carrera. I love it. I find the gear changes very precise. I never miss a shift. I have driven a car with stock shifter and I hated it . Feels sloppy and shifts are slow. I do notice a bit of stiffness when it is cold but that goes away after a few shifts. I love mine and would never go back. Phillipj
  7. I used Performance Friction racing pads on stock rotors, no squeak... Switched to Zimmerman drilled rotors with Porterfield R4S pads, major squeaking when the pads get warm. I figured it's the **** rotors :( I've just purchased a set of Mintex Red pads hoping to replace them to get rid of the squeak but after reading your posts :( ****! I'm hoping not to revert to stock pads because of the dust level. I'm considering switching to stock rotors now. Clubhead, I was considering the Zimmerman rotors as well until I was told (by people on this site) that parts of it can rust (unlike the OEM rotors.) I hate rust! Thanks to this site's feedback I went with OEM rotors and pads. I don't track my car so the OEM pads are fine. I hope you get rid of your :censored: squeaking!!! Phillipj
  8. I recently did my fronts on my 996. I bought OEM everything, Rotors, Pads. Make sure to order the brake damper plates (no squeaking) tension spring kit and new caliper bolts. (These are inexpensive but important.) Total online came to around $450. I asked a lot of people on this site about aftermarket rotors (Zimmerman) and aftermarket pads. Everyone convinced me to just go with the OEM. Very happy I did. Mechanic installed them for me as a favor. They work awesome. Absolutely no squeaking. Brake dust is minimal. I'm so anal I clean my wheels after driving the car. Good luck with your car!! Phillipj
  9. CosmoC4S, Beautiful job. Really nice finish and very subtle. Hope it holds up for you under heavy use. Please let us know!! Phillipj
  10. I have a 99 996. I know this has been covered many times  but how do I clean my MAF? Can you direct me to a DIY thread? Thanks in advance for your input. Phillipj
  11. It's too bad to admit that most Porsche dealers are real jerks. I'm in So Cal and my local dealer is so obnoxious I won't even go in there. I had the same experience with my wheel locks. The dealer wanted to replace all lugs. The I went to the Local tire store and the kid working there took them off for me. (I tipped him 10 bucks.) He told me that almost all car thieves have the same tools so wheel locks are kind of a joke. Phillipj
  12. I bought my 996 with 50k miles 3 years ago. It had all the stuff I wanted on it., Fabspeed mufflers, chip, Short shift kit and super lite Carrera alloys and a body kit. I drive it a few times a week (maybe 3k miles a year.) I agree that although it can be a daily driver you will appreciate it more if you drive it part time. I don't get very good city mileage because of the way I drive it. But on the freeway I think I get around 24 mpg. I have had a BMW M6 (old version and a M3 (E36), I agree that there is no comparison to the Porsche. The Carrera is more like a comfortable go-kart (which I love.) It makes me smile every time I drive it. The only problems I have had were an ignition switch and replaced a starter. My cam covers weep a bit but never a drop on the floor. My mechanic said I should have the cam covers done (not cheap.) I asked him "Is it a serious issue?" He said "no". "Will it hurt the motor?" He again said "no". So I said "So why the heck should I fix it?" He didn't have a good answer. When I drive the car I drive it fast. That's why I got it. Although it is always spotless (never even has brake dust on the rims) it is not a garage queen! Look at lot of cars before you buy one and definetly have a good mechanic look at it before making a decision. Try to find one with performance upgrades so you don't have to pay for them. Good luck and be patient. Let us all know when you find a car! Phillipj
  13. Philhan, I know this seems strange but have you had any trouble with your ignition switch? Before my ignition totally failed the air conditioning quit working, While I was driving I giggled the ignition key (becuase the key felt funny when I started the car) and the air came back on. At my next stop the ignition failed. If it is your switch there is a great DIY on this site. Just my own experience. Phillipj
  14. I agree with REM. The 996 Damper plates should stop the squeak. Phillipj
  15. I have the Fabspeed mufflers on my 996 and love them. I really like the sound but again it is a very personal thing. I have a friend with a 997 and he found the X-51 Porsche headers for a really good price (less than $800 from a dealer somewhere) He did notice a bit of low end torque loss but he likes the performance overall. Almost everyone I have spoken to that has changed their cats has not been too happy. You do lose some low end torque and the sound is quite harsh. I agree with the others to leave on the stock cats and just modify the mufflers and possibly the headers. Tubi has a great web site with sound clips. Might want to check that out. Good luck with whatever you decide. Phillipj
  16. Thank you for the kind remarks. Yeah now that i moved to an apartment and no longer have the luxury of a full garage, I have to make do with what I can. The lip only comes in black. It is poly. i'm sure you could paint it but IMO it is going to get scraped so why bother. You know it may fit the 99 as well- the width and circumference of the underside of the bumper looks pretty close to the 02+. BUT- I believe there is an under-lip available for the MKI GT2 bumper which would probably be the pre-facelift equivalent of mine. I think there is a Cup and a Street version of the Gt2 lip. Maybe Loren can help research if there is in fact a GT2 lip available? I think it's like $100. Thanks for the info. Since I already have to be careful with the spoiler as is I think I'll leave it alone. Again, nice job on your car. Phillipj
  17. Thanks for the info Loren. Think I will leave it as is. Will save the money for my next car! Thanks again Phillipj
  18. Porsche3, Thanks so much for the DIY! :renntech: You did a great job. It looks really nice. Does the chin spoiler come in black only? Did you order it in black? As for your "ghetto" techniques I think you are a good problem solver! Sometimes we have to be creative. Your 996 is a beauty. Simple and clean. I have a white 99 with a body kit. Don't think that spoiler would work on mine because I'm sure the demensions are different. Thanks again for the excellent pics and instructions. Phillipj
  19. ;) If anyone has an Evoms V-Flow Air Intake that they would like to sell please contact me. Thank you, Phillipj
  20. 99-996 Do you have a reputable Porsche mechanic in your area? The dealer is going to charge you $200 to 300 more than a private shop. I have a mechanic that was a Porsche master mechanic with Beverly Hills Porsche for 15 years and now has his own shop. He qouted me $1500 to $1600 for a clutch. I usually pay him cash so I don't pay tax. Might be worth yur while to try to get some referrals of good Porsche mechanics in your area so you don't get reamed by the dealer. The Porsche Dealer my area really is awful and treats you like crap. Just a thought. Enjoy your toy! Phillipj
  21. GOB, Thanks for the reply. I think I will just go with the OEM pads. The brakes are great as they are and I don't track the car. I have done aftermarket changes in the past and been dissapointed. I appreciate your feedback and hope you get your brakes to work as they should. Phillipj
  22. Invercroft, Thanks so much for the feedback on the Mintex pads. Did you find that they produce less brake dust than the OEM pads like they claim? I have the opportunity to pick up front and rear pads (Mintex) and Stainless brake lines for $170 bucks. Seems like a sweet deal to me. Thanks for the info! Phillipj
  23. Has anyone replaced the 996 OEM brake pads with the Mintex pads? Just wondered what their experience was with them. Thanks, Phillipj
  24. Someone ran into my car a couple weeks ago Had to replace rear bumper and repaint front spoiler (my deductible..arrghh!) It was a hit and run (nice) Had some other little imperfections fixed at the same time. Just got new Conti's as well. Wanted to post a couple pics cus I'm so glad to get it back! Phillipj
