  1. Thanks Loren. Sounds like they might be worthwhile on the mile long back straight at VIR.
  2. With Driver’s Ed and Autocross season almost here, I decided to remove my front bumper this week and clean the radiators. Not much, if anything, new to report above and beyond JeTexas’s excellent video DIY. But among other things, I found I was missing both RUBBER LIPS (996-504-503-00) found on the underside in front of the wheels . The Pelican Parts catalog describes these as “expendable.” Since Porsche tends to do things for a reason, I am curious what these pieces do. Since they are beneath the radiator cooling fans, do they help extract more air, simply direct it, or what? Do they provide enough benefit to justify the cost (sub $50)? Also, for anyone doing the bumper removal for the first time, I would recommend 4 things: Have a few extra screws for the bottom of the bumper ready. I was missing 3 of them. Also the fender liner fasteners may be old and brittle, so I would have a few of them ready as well. I just replaced all of mine. The screw in step one that is described as the toughest one to reach is not bad if you go ahead and pop both fender liner fasteners out. And finally, have an 8 inch or better extension ready to get to several of the torx screws, especially the ones holding the inner plastic scoops in place.
  3. Final installment for anyone searching with the same issues. It turns out that both diagnosis (clutch helper spring and P/N 99661702104) were wrong. It was the clutch and brake pedal switches. In hind sight, these parts are so cheap that I should have done them myself as preventive maintenance. Hope this helps.
  4. Reading a post on another forum about compatible antifreeze got me thinking. I have a strong feeling that the PO may have put up to a half gallon of Peak (premixed) into my MY '99 996. Where can I find a list of compatible antifreeze's? And I assume this is not compatible, I should immediately flush? Is there a DIY for changing the coolant? I didn't see one on a quick search.
  5. I have had this bookmarked for sometime in case I have the problem you are describing. No experience with them, just glad to have an alternative to dealer replacement.
  6. Clutch helper spring. I just had this done last week at the stealership. $116 installed including tax, title and delivery.
  7. Is the antanna amp a frequent item to fail? Obviuosly checking the ground as suggested first is great advice, but $100 for a new amp is not too bad if these have a high rate of failure.
  8. Well, a new clutch helper spring was installed today at the stealership. Total $116. I really like the way it feels now. Be that as it may, still no joy with the cruise control.
  9. Reading lots of forums before I bought R-S3's, numerous people reported the the V12 was a poor choice for the track. As I recall, chunks would come out of tread and belts slip. And BTW, R-S3's are great on the track.
  10. In case anyone finds this on a "search," I went by the stealership today to check on what is needed to replace the original helper spring. The short answer is to just buy the newer part. No other modifications are needed. And FWIW, the "Porsche Genuine" part was cheaper than the Pelican Parts OEM version by about $10.00.
  11. The original clutch helper (power?) spring on my car was part number 996-423-579-01. And like others have done, when mine began to squeak and offer little help, I removed it. For those that said this was the best mod they ever did, IMHO, "one man's hamburger is another man's steak." :) Be that as it may, I know that this particual part was superceded by part number 996-423-081-18. No big deal so far. But I seem to remember reading somewhere that this replacement on my '99 also required several other parts of the pedal assembly to be replaced at the same time. Now I can't find anything about the newer part. Does anyone know if I do need to do more than just install the new part? Or am I confusing this with TSB 1/99 3005 Boost Spring for Clutch Pedal? As always, THANKS! Hal
  12. Agreed. A bit more research confirms your recommendation. Appreciate the help.
  13. I think I am overdue on changing my manual transmission fluid. I have read the DIY article and don't think doing this will be a big deal. My question: Is there a favorite brand and weight to use? Any suggested sources where to buy it? Thanks.
  14. Maybe someone will comment on this, but 993 original suspensions are totally shot after 50k miles. Unless 996's are different, I would think you need a refresh of shocks, springs, and bushings.
  15. Following Loren's earlier suggestion, I had my mechanic check out the system with a PST2. Their diagnosis was that my removal of the clutch helper spring was not allowing the clutch pedal to return to the proper position to engage the clutch pedal switch. We are doing to move forward later this winter with replacing helper spring (wife wants that done, regardless) and see it that does, in fact, fix my issue.
  16. Thanks. That is what I thought. . . Just wanted to be sure. Happy New Year!
  17. A month or so ago I replaced my track pads with OEM's to get through the winter. All went well but about a week ago the Break Wear Sensor light came on. I just pulled all 4 wheels and all appears OK. I am pretty sure I have the original, 12 year old, sensors and that they are the issue. While reading the forums on this topic, I saw where some folks that track their cars frequently "jumper" the sensor so as to not use it and keep the light off. I understand the concept but I am not sure exactly how to do this. Can someone write a brief description? Thanks!
  18. C2. Thanks everyone. This is exactly as the PO described. . . Except for the "new" price!
  19. When I bought my '99 last summer, the cruise control was not working. The previous owner said that he had had this checked and the issue traced to a component attached to the gas pedal. Using SEARCH, I have not found anything that references a similar component. Is there a C/C diagram anywhere so I can look up said part?
  20. After one day at VIR weekend before last, I started hearing a strange jingle from the rear engine compartment of my 1999 996. It was like a string of Christmas bells ringing. The next morning, a mechanic I know was walking past and i got his opinion which was that an accessory was having a problem, probably the A/C clutch because the A/C stopped functioning the same time. Anyone else had either an a/c or a/c clutch failure? This is very reminiscent of an issue I had years ago with a new '77 320i. Are clutches available independent from the entire compressor? Is this a reasonable DIY replacement? Any and all help welcome.
