  1. I do not use a separate flash drive - it is the one built into the Macbook Air. I just boot it up as the Windows choice vs the OS choice and run it like a normal pc. I can switch it back and forth - but chose not to run both at the same time. With Parallel you can run both at same time but the one program that I run under Windows will not run that way. This way I can have all my programs on a small light portable computer and not worry about what platform it runs under.
  2. I also have a Macbook Air and have used bootcamp to partition the flash drive and installed a full version of windows to run some financial software tht has not been ported to the mac. That way you have the best of both worlds. If you can take it to an apple store they can provide all you will need.
  3. I have a 2001 996 tip with 40k that has developed (or I just noticed) a slight idle issue. In gear stopped I can feel a slightly rhythmic pulsing but the rpm is very steady- it is the same in park as well. but if I just touch the gas to bring rpm up to @ 1000 it pulses up and down @ 200rpm each cycle. The car drives normally and it is not something that affects drivability but wondering what it is. New air filter, new fluids, well taken care of and no codes popping up. Top tier gas used, and no oil usage between changes at every 5k. Should I try a spray cleaner into the throttle body to see if any buildup - but it looked very clean when I changed the air filter recently. ICV possibly or an intake leak of some sort - what is the best way to test this? Thanks for any ideas to resolve this minor issure - before it might turn into something larger...
  4. With all of your help and DIY tutorials I set out to flush my brakes on a 2001 996. Ordered new fluid, a Motive bleeder and other misc accessories and set to work. After putting the car and 4 jackstands and removing wheels I removed the cap and then tried to remove the filter. After a few tries with a needle nose pliers I ripped the filter but was able to remove it. The flush was easy and quick - amazing how dirty the fluid was after only 5k miles and 2 years! Finished up and on to the next project - thinking it would be easy to get another filter. Of course - this being a Porsche you can only get the whole assembly - not just the filter! The dealer was eager to sell me the whole unit. Any ideas how I can just get a new filter only? Thanks
  5. After changing the oil and filter with adapter - a very easy job - used initially 8.5 quarts - ran it for a while and checked the dipstick. It read low so I filled with the remaining .5 quarts and ran and then let sit again for 30 minutes. Now on startup the oil level readout in the dash read 2 bars low, but the dipstick reads full. Prior to oil change it read full and the oil level read all bars - have I missed something? It is a 2001 3.4 and it did not use any oil in the @ 5k since last oil change. Do I add some additional oil so the oil guage on startup reads full or leave it as it is according to the dipstick? It now has 9 full quarts added since a full drain and new filter w/LN adapter.
  6. great info - thanks for the quick response. off to the garage and change it out.
  7. I am going to change my oil ( to Joe Gibbs DT-40) and and upgrade the oil filter to the LN Spin-On oil filter adapter & filter. On the install instructions it says to lubricate both o-rings in the adaptor with an appropriate o-ring lubricant. Now I know it might be a simple question but should I just use some of the new motor oil on these o-rings and then screw in the adapter and torque it down or another type of lubricant? Thanks
  8. It seems that the power mirror switch in my 2001 996 works only when it wants to - not when I want it to work. The mirrors work fine with the memory function but when I try to change it in any direction on either side it either does nothing or just a slight amount and then stops. Very annoying - especially with more than one driver and settings. I realize that the switch is hardly every used - can I take it out and spray some contact cleaner on it to clean it up or do I just have to change it out? Thanks for any/all ideas.
  9. ballast replaced - harness would have required removing the radiator support and other hardware - so i just installed the ballast resistor. It now works correctly. Of course it is now snowing in Nashville, TN so I will have to wait for the weather to heat up to test it in hot weather but a nice garage project. Of course while I was working on it there is always another project to think about... Thanks for all your assistance.
  10. Now that I have the new harness can someone post the steps to replace the whole harness instead of just the resistor? Do I need to remove the wheel and inner fender liner and can do it from there or is it move involved? I cannot find this from the online manuals posted. Does it make sense just to replace the resistor only - or changeout the whole harness? Thanks for the boards help on this. Steve
  11. Thanks everyone for your ideas. I first tested the fuses - ok. Then I tested the relays - both low clicked when I had a fingertip on them and turned on the A/C. Then jacked up the car to test the fans - both turn freely. I then started the car with the A/C on and the right fan turned on and the resistor got hot. Left side did not turn on and resistor was cold - looks like I found the problem. I will order the resistor harness and replace just the resistor as it seems easier than trying to install the whole harness. Should I also test the high relays with the fingertip test - should they click as well if A/C is turned on - or they will only turn on when water temp/A/C pressure is high? Thanks again!
  12. I have noticed that my 2001 996 tip might have a fan problem. When I start it from cold with the a/c on only the right side fan comes on - not the left side and it seems to be at high speed. Since the weather has not been over @50 degrees I do not notice either of the low fans running at any time. The temp is very steady with the needle between the 8 and 0 both in-town and on the fwy. How can I do a step by step diagnosis to see if the ballast resistor is bad, a relay is bad or ? If I turn off the a/c the right fan turns off - but other than that not sure if all is ok. Would like to take care of this before it gets hot again and it causes a greater problem. Checked the forums with search and have not been able to locate a trail to follow instead of just throwing parts at it. Thanks!
  13. Thanks - who knew! I am always amazed of the unique features that are never listed or explained. This is my 3rd Porsche - 914 -912e- now 996 - and each is unique and different - and requires a new knowledge base for each.
  14. After reading these positings I now have a question: my 2001 with factory aero kit shows the rear lid light on startup and runing - but it goes off when I put it in dirve and drive off. It is a tip and I wonder why it does this? Lid is shut, brake light works - and it does it every time. Is there something to check or is something wrong or is this normal as the car is somewhat new to me.
  15. I cannot seem to find a direct answer so here goes - what position should the wire pressure relief on top of the coolant tank be - straight up or over to the side. It seems that in the up position it 'locks' in place with the top of the valve. I think it should be up to bleed and down (over to the side) all other times - is that correct? Simple question and hopefully a simple answer. Thanks!
  16. When I had the initial PPI on my 2001 996 the Porsche tech at the dealership said that the high horn was out. Since this would require the front bumper cover to come off i saved it for another day. Ordered the new high horn, removed the front bumper cover and cleaned out the radiators (not to bad, pretty clean for 32k) and had my son hit the horn so I could see which was out. It turned out that both worked so now I am stuck. The horn sounds wimpy with both working - I put my hand on each and each sounds. Is it possible that at one point the high horn was replaced with a low horn and both are the same? Is there any way to test this without taking off both and looking at the part numbers? I put the bumper cover back on to enjoy driving it as the weather is not too bad - and it is not too bad a job to take it off again but want to make sure that it will be correct once finished. All ideas appreciated.
