  1. Ahsai, Excellent suggestion. Had never hear of them. Glad to know they pass CA smog. New CARB procedures however consist primarily of an inspection rather than tailpipe test. Using "original" equipment is best then. Thank you.
  2. Thank you kgoetz. There appears to be a wide range in prices for 200 cats. Does anyone have any experience on whether there is a corresponding range in quality? TopGear from UK or Circuit Werks are1/3 the price of FabSpeed or CarGraphic for example. Is the price delta in the catalyst or stainless steel/workmanship. Appreciate the feedback.
  3. Will installing 200 cell cats on 997.1 cause a CEL? If so, is there anything that can be done to eliminate it? Also curious whether their use on car with PSE will significantly increase exhaust loudness as I'm not really looking for more sound. Appreciate any feedback including performance experience when combined with competition throttle body and intake plenum. Thank you.
  4. Problem has been solved. Service Tech found that the instrument coding was incorrect (not sure what that means), and indicated that it must have been mistakenly changed when programming for the new sensors. Apparently this prevented the TPMS module from remembering the settings and giving the warning lights and setting the error code 8003 "system disturbance". Thanks to all who commented.

Thank you dphatch, Dura metric indicates three things: 1) tire pressures read accurately and battery life is 86+ months, 2) error code 8003 "system disturbance" and 3) System Information screen does not update. Prior post http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/42721-tpms-fault-8003/# indicates that this error indicates PCM2 MMI Operating buttons are jammed and is therefore likely a general "system disturbance" code that applies to multiple modules. The durametric system information screen will not update so I'm not sure whether sensor frequency is part of that data. Will return to shop with a TPMS tool to confirm correct 433 MHz sensors have been installed and update post. Thank you.

  7. Have recently had 4 new TPS sensors installed in my 997 MY08 C4S at local Porsche Indy. Tire pressures are displayed but system will not store the registration data after being "Set" through console or PMIS. With each ignition start receive message "Wheel change? Input new TPC settings". followed by flat tire and red error lights. Have driven car extensively between settings for system to "learn". Indy tried a known working control module without different result. I do not know mfg. of sensor units although shop has indicated that they have used them before in other vehicles without problems. Everyone is stymied frankly. Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.
  8. MY 99 C2 sits over 3/4 inch lower in the rear than front when measured from level ground to top of wheel well with consistent tire pressure. Assuming this is the correct way to measure, is this an indication that the rear springs are tired and need replaced? I presume the car should sit level with new springs?. Car appears to be aligned properly although I have not had it aligned in the 2 years I've owned the vehicle.

  10. I recently installed a set of Fabspeed headers and mufflers on my 3.4 996 seeking an improved exhaust note and perhaps some improved performance. Exhaust sound is a bit more 'aggressive' than I was hoping for and has a slight drone in lower rpm range. Can anyone advise of a muffler that has a slightly less aggressive note? Thanks
  11. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Could the misfire possibly have been related to air in the fuel line after disconnecting them to replace the reservoir. I was pleasently surprised when today the problem "resolved" itself. Wish more problems did this. I reset computer and all codes have resolved. Go figure. The fuel line for the right bank is quite long and perhaps trapped air affected fuel pressure on that bank as the misfires were quite serious. If this was the problem, not sure how the DME would have set all the error codes. Anyway, I'm happy the problem appears to be solved. This site is great. Thanks to all that contribute to help us newbies get familiar with these wonderful cars.
  12. I was starting to feel really good about having just saved a $400 labor bill by replacing a new coolant reservoir and thermostat myself - only to discover a bad misfire upon restart. Computer codes P0300 (random misfire), P0306, P0304, P0305, P1319, P1313, P1318, and P1314 all misfire codes for cyl 4,5 & 6. The only thing that I can think of was that I had to disconnect the fuel lines to replace the reservoir. Coil wires appear to be intact. Any ideas about what I could have screwed up? I didn't knowingly disconnect anything else but not that familiar yet with the 996 ignition system. Appreciate any leads.
  13. Not true - there are at least a few Porsche VIN decoders on the net, and you will be able to discover the original engine serial number in this way. Try http://www.autoatlanta.com/life/vin/vin.php (for basic information) or emailing to Suncoast Parts through their contact form. When I was looking for a P-car last summer, I would email Shawn the VIN and he would get back to me with some kind of computer factory printout. Thank you for the leads Spender. Great VIN decoder. I'll try contacting Suncoast for more info as well. Appreciate the help.
  14. Thank you slbates. You are correct. I was mistakenly reading this as an engine serial number when it is the engine code followed by the trans code as you pointed out. I'm learning that there appears to be no straightfoward way to link the original engine number with VIN without original purchase documentation. Still trying to validate the local porsche shop's opinion that this is a replacement engine.
  15. Thank you Goldenwarrior1. I've since learned that I misinterpreted the number on the Identification label as being the engine number when it is actually the engine code followed by the five diget transmision code. I had read somewhere that dealers revised purchase documentation when replacing an engine under warranty but apparently that is not always the case. Without all the paperwork from original owner, it appears to be difficult to match an engine number with a VIN. I've learned that a Certificate of Authenticity is available from Porsche North America or through PCA - at a sizable fee. Thank you for helping me sort this out.
  16. I have recently made my first Porsche purchase, a low mileage (50K) 1999 996 Cab. It runs great and I love it. I have however discovered that the engine is not original. I have read that if Porsche replaces the engine, they also change the vehicles label- which did not happen on this vehicle. My question is whether there is any way to determine the origin of the replacement motor, whether it was a warranty replacement or a junk yard motor. I understand that remanufactured motors have an AT designation so I'm puzzled. The service records I have are obviously incomplete. Original motor M96/0166XG9600. (Fairly certain from two labels that is a 'G' not a "6")?? Current motor M96/0166X15933 Thank you.
