  1. I have noticed that in the morning after the car has sat all night that on start up I hear a buzz. It sort of sounds tinny like a exhaust pipe and comes from drivers side. It goes away with in seconds. After the car warms up it either on start up is not there or is much less noticeable. Is this normal behavior? The car has 52k on it. I have only owned the car for about a month so don't know what to expect. -Don Sorry I accidentally posted this in the 997 section. I would move it but really not sure how. So feel free to ignore this post :) -Don
  2. I have owned a 2001 C4 with Tip a little over a month and was noticing similar characteristics. At first I had a very light throttle as I was interested in knowing what I could achieve MPG wise around town. Well it is around 17.9 MPG to mid 18. After I was satisfied with that mileage info I got more interested in why it seemed in my opinion to be "Doggy" leaving traffic lights. This is comparing it to my auto tran V8 2000 Jeep and auto tran Jeep Commander with Hemi which both can snap your neck when you accelerate from a traffic light. So I got reading the C4 owners manual and read that if I push the throttle all the way to the floor it deselects economy mode. I tried it the next day at a traffic light and after picking myself up out of the back seat had to conclude that yes, the C4 can accelerate nicely when I want it to. Of course spirited driving is suppose to be good for the IMS also, so I will more than likely be doing more of this. In addition I have down shifted with the paddle shifter as above posted which helps also. Don
  3. Recently my "Perfect" shape cab top started coming out of the channel on both sides. I put it in half up position and can get it back in the channel. That was not a big deal but this morning with the top up on the drivers side top of the roof I see it is now scuffed up like something inside the mechanism rubbed against it while opening. Has anyone else experienced this? Needless to say I am not happy as the top was perfect before this. Thanks in Advance. I have attached a pic of what the damage looks like. I know it does not look like much but the top was mint a month ago when I bought the car. I am leaning towards animal damage since it appears that this portion of the top is still exposed when top is stowed.
  4. So say I go with the Porsche one "http://www.amazon.com/Porsche-Battery-Maintainer/dp/B001684X76/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_img_2" as opposed to a CTEK., and suppose I already did the Cig lighter retrofit."Contact Jeff at Sunset Porsche, there is a $20 retrofit kit to change the lighter over to US specs in about 10 min" Will the Porsche maintainer still fit in the retrofit plug? -Don
  5. If it is in the garage and you disconnect the battery just don't close the front trunk lid.
  6. Posted Yesterday, 01:34 PM Regarding the EQ (DSP) removal: look here and here http://forums.rennli...sp-removal.html http://986forum.com/...sp-removal.html I was just in Best Buy trying to look at the JVC KW-AV70BT double din unit. I have read that the CDR-220 can be removed and existing amp and speakers can be used with other head unit, Unlike the later model radios that use the OPTICAL interface. My question is about the CDR-220 like mine that also uses the DSP - which is I read digital. Does this mean my amp is different and it will be more difficult to connect a different head unit or is it still about the same issue as on would have with a non DSP CDR-220?
  7. Logray. Why do you not think it is just low on freon? Don
  8. This maintain charge has raised a few more questions: 1. What does someone do that lives in an apartment do with keeping these cars charged when gone for long periods of time? 2. I need to read up on the "Orientation Led" apparently is stays lit when car is not locked and armed. Then eventually the car switches to armed state - is this when top is up or down? I honestly did not even know that there was a LED glowing away in my garage other then the Becker 220 radio flashing LED that seems to flash regardless of car being armed. This morning I checked and found that the car had switched to locked alarm mode on its own. I think I read that it will do this in the manual but did not think I found it switching in the past and thought it was some other default setting after I disconnected the battery over the weekend while swapping the climate control around. I guess there are more ways to drain the battery than I would ever think possible. Edit: "This morning I checked and found that the car had switched to locked alarm mode on its own" I may have been wrong about this.
  9. Regarding the EQ (DSP) removal: look here and here http://forums.rennli...sp-removal.html http://986forum.com/...sp-removal.html I had thought about the only option I found in those threads, which is to just hide it behind some other display since it does not have to be touched. Not an elegant solution as I would rather just jumper a wire or what ever but it does not sound like it would be that simple. I really did not know my amp was digital. Now I do.
  10. Dharn55, It was hitting some stepped shelf in the top of the bay. I am really not sure why the shelf was stepped. It started about 4 inches back or so. I was amazed at all the angles and steps and modified brackets and one type of screw mount and another type of screw mount I found through out the upper and lower bay. Here is a pic showing what I had to remove with my dremo drill. The down pointing arrow shows a raised edge that I shaved off down but not including the lower longer raised edge. SO I took off about an inch of this edge. The upword pointing arrow shows the tip before I knicked off the very point of this angled edge.
  11. I have included a before and after picture. Is the picture I uploaded showing "Console After" showing the climate control the same as where you put your climate control? BTW - the Bat Wing drove me batty, I could not figure out how to disconnect the seat heater switches to gain more room while working. As is I dinged the very top center of the batwing because I failed to notice that there are two parallel plastic protruding edges on the bottom of the climate control. Don I included an additional pic with a red arrow pointing at the location that I moved the climate control to as the previous pics may not offer enough res to ascertain where the unit was moved. I also added a pic of the Bat wing as it confused me what was this Bat Wing the people were referring to. I thought it was something over the rear engine deck lid, :)
  12. Over the weekend I moved the climate control down to the lower console din slot. It was challenging getting the cables to there new location but I succeeded by routing them down the pass side(USA) of the center console. It was difficult to see where to pass the bundle thru as it has four plugs and is very cumbersome. I found that laying my trouble light on the passenger floor and facing it upword allowed me to see light shining through and where to pass through location was. I found that I could not get the Climate control to slide into the lower slot. It kept stopping with about a 1/4 inch more to go. I could not get it to go in even with all four plugs disconnected. I finally got desperate and shaved just a little off the point on both sides of the unit that stick out. I also shave the top of the unit on both top sides where there is a slightly raised surface. I did not take much off and I loathed having to take any plastic off and that did the trick and the unit slid right into position. Has anyone else experienced this ? I had thought it would slide right into this location. -------------------------------- My other question is in regards to the Becker CDR-220 and the additional "Equalizer" or whatever that additional unit is called. It has one plug on the back side of it which I would assume connects to the radio. I tried the radio with it unplugged and could not get the radio to work. Plugging it back in the radio works. Is there a way to "delete" this external device in the Becker Setup or a way to "Jumper" out this device? I am thinking about using the DIN slot it takes up for a different purpose and do not feel that I will miss this device. Thanks in advance. Don
  13. Thanks for the additional info. And I wont call you "PA" either. And no I did not buy a tender yet. I have a Charger Tender Sears Die hard brand but that is overkill and probably not even up to Ctek standards. My Sears Die hard battery jumper/charger with built in battery broke the first day I used it :) -Don
  14. Thanks Mr PA. that should help me. DO I have to buy a maintainer that fits the ROW charging plug in my car? I noticed as other have noticed that a US plug sure does not fit well.
  15. What is the procedure to hook up your 996 battery to maintain it for say a week while you are out of town? 1. Should I hook it up in the engine bay and leave the engine lid open? - Run it out underneath? 2. In the front trunk, take the dust cover over the battery off and hook it up there - and leave front trunk open for the cables to pass through? 3. Roll a window down, replace the existing ROW Cigar lighter plug with a USA version, and plug in a Cig power plug there which is wired to the maintainer? Probably no brainer questions and obvious to you long time owners but I am only going on about a month of ownership with my 996 2001 Cab. I got concerned with draining the battery when I had the pass door open for extended times while trying to get the CDR-220 loose that you may have seen my post on elsewhere. Thanks in advance for any help.
  16. "Before I wash my Cab, I test the drains by pouring a small amount of water from a plastic bottle into the drain holes. I then look under the car to see if water is coming out of the end points of the drain lines. Test both sides. Cheap insurance to avoid a serious and costly problem. " JohnJMoran, I looked last night when I got home to remove some darn bird stuff off my Cab top. Where do you pour this water? I did not see any obvious locations to pour the "Test" water.
  17. Basically we both use travel mugs which are not that tall.
  18. OK Thanks - this is a CDR-220 , I did not intend to disconnect any connectors at this stage anyway. I was trying to figure which route I wanted to take to input audio to the CDR-220. VIA antenna which has the added bonus of displaying Song/Title info or via the Audio which I have been experimenting with and have gotten audio into the radio from the RCA cables that were previously connected to what I guess is a dead CD changer since all I get is "NO CD found".
  19. " later 996 that fits around the radio and climate control etc" So it is the swing out style that does not even tie up a din slot. I never thought it would fit in the earlier model. I guess you will find out :) If it does fit it would be the perfect solution for folks wanting to go the double din radio head route.
  20. Until the ultimates come in I am using a hand made cup holder that I have mounted in the Center Console. I used about a 2 inch thick piece of black foam and cut two circles in it conforming to the travel mugs we use. It works ok for now if you do not mind being a contortionist. At least I know the mug is not going to flip over. I would say it is probably 2 percent better than a roll of duct tape on the floor. The biggest issue is the center console door only opens so far and you can not tip it out of the way. Do two ultimates make it crowded for the passenger? I bought a knockoff of the plastic thingy that slides between the console and the passenger seat and the better half made me get it out of there. Oh well it worked good for the driver :) I am thinking no one has ever tried putting the OEM cup holder in the lower console location as of yet. Maybe I will be the first one to try - .or. when the Ultimates come in maybe I will be satisfied with them.
  21. Not yet I am leaving it where it is until I get a spare moment. I got caught up in an AC issue on another vehicle. BTW - does anyone know if there is a microswitch anti theft device on the 996 like there is on the Boxster - at least that is what I think from reading some posts. Have not actually seen either.
  22. "Perhaps you can purchase a MY02 Horse shoe with cup holders from some place like Okalohoma Foreign. " You mean one meant for a 2002 car with the swing out coffee holder? - I would not think it would fit in a 2001 car but I really do not know. "I went for www.ultimatecupholders.com 's product" are these the ones that go on the floor boards either side of the center hump? If so that is what I ordered for short term. "I looked at retrofitting the factory option, but who wants a tall frosty soda up that high where it can easily tip and spill all over the place? " - are you referring to just below the center top vent? If so I understand. I am trying to put it in the next to bottom din down by the shifter. " Even a Starbucks lid, which almost completely covers the cup, spills drips of coffee when I hit bumps. Just my 2 cents." - Don't get me going on Starbucks cups they are the worst engineered disposable cup out there. I have no issue with them being good for the environment but the darn lids spill coffee like a geyser!!! I am serious you hit a bump in any car with any cup holder and out it comes at least an inch high of coffee in the air. it helps to use the stirring stick which has a flat surface surrounding the top of the stick that engages with the drinking hole and pretty much keeps it from leaking in normal driving mode. Can't speak for it working when you are driving spirit-idly.
  23. I do not see holes in mine as they are all covered in leather. I did order two of the holders that fit on the floor for around fifty for the two. But I like the clean look of the OEM pop out ones and am just curious if the unit will fit in number three din where number one is the top most din just below the center vents.
  24. 2. Well I will answer part of my # 2 question. I used the $9.00 adapter and plugged one end of the adapter into my IPod headphone jack and then plugged the left and right RCA phono jacks into the RCA phono jacks I pulled out of the changer. I assume to make it work you need to change from CD to aux on the Becker which I had already done. I forgot to look and see if Luciano was being displayed on the Becker Screen. Attached is a pic of the adapter plugged in to the RCA Audio Jacks. The Ipod device plugs into the exposed plug. The second pic is of the package the adapter came in that I got at RS
