  1. Yes, other airbags should work fine.

    Some racer/track hounds use a resistor to simulate the airbag - do a search here for that.

    You can clear it Durametric but it will keep coming back on until the issue is fixed (or jumpered).

    But Loren, I am reading that if you disconnect the battery and let the car sit for 30+ minutes before unplugging the seat, it won't trigger the airbag failure warning? Obviously I didn't do that, but if I reset the warning with a durametric, isn't there a way to keep it from coming back? Unplug battery? Let it sit overnight?

    I am not sure I want to go down that route, sounds complicated. Is there a simpler, more straightforward way instead of jumping pins?

  2. I asked this on another IMS lawsuit thread, but got no responses. If we bought a 996 that had $5-6k in IMS-related repairs done by the previous owner, are we (current owner) entitled to anything? Or is this only if you spent the money and still own the car?

    This is a question best asked of the lawyers handling the case; but my read of the casework would be that the money would go to the owner that incurred the loss, not the later owner(s).

    Thank you. I emailed the previous owner who spent the money with a link to the IMS lawsuit threads. But he said he couldn't be bothered, so I was wondering if I could get some $$. haha.

  3. You to disconnect the battery before removing the electrical connectors on the seats - or you will get an airbag light.

    You will need Durametric, a Porsche PST2 or Porsche PIWIS to clear the airbag code.

    Thanks for the quick response Loren. My searches revealed the same thing - **** noobie mistake is going to cost me $300 for a durametric. Sigh.

    Let me confirm with you - if I want to use the car with the passenger seat removed for an extended period of time, resetting the code with durametric is enough? Are my other airbags still working fine?

    Can I drive the car till the durametric gets here? Or should I wait to clear the code before driving?

This is going to seem like a silly question and probably is... but the settlement and 25% refund applies only to the actual person who paid for the repairs and not the current owner correct? i.e., my previous owner did the whole IMS retrofit and other things and I have receipts and all the paperwork, but car was not in my ownership at the time. This doesn't help me does it?

  5. Great to see this getting resolved in favor of the consumer. It's a crying shame for people to buy a $100K car and have to deal with IMS or similar critical failures.

    Million dollar airplanes break too. I've seen cars of all makes and models have engines blow up. All parts are eligible to fail. I've watched a friends Harley fail right before my eyes. Piston rod failed on the rear cylinder. 2011 MB E class engine blew. Why would anyone think the Porsche would be bullet proof. I love my 2004 and it's sold as a rock. I'm sorry for those that have suffered the failure, but I don't lose sleep at night over it.

    I would just buy a new engine from Jake Raby. People replace engines in Airplanes, Truck and cars everyday. Why not the Porsche?

    A. Pointless to compare airplanes to cars. Different technologies, supply chain, engineering standards and complexity.

    B. Pointless to compare Porsches to Harleys. Not even going to touch that one.

    C. Pointless to compare isolated examples of your friends' vehicle problems (you seem to have a lot of friends with vehicle problems) to a class action lawsuit which by definition means a large incidence rate.

    Here is the bottom line: wear and tear and variability in quality is inherent in everything we buy. When variability in quality and catastrophic failure percentage goes over a statistically significant threshold, that is not acceptable. Most definitely not acceptable in a boutique product that people pay a premium for.

    I am glad you love your Porsche. We all do.

  6. Kind of off-topic, but can anyone help me with the question below:

    My 03 C4S has the projectors (post facelift), but no HIDs. So I got a DDM H7 55W kit (have had good luck with DDM kits in two other cars so far). I took the headlight apart today, but the bulbs seem to be of the wrong variety. Can anyone look at the photos attached and tell me exactly what kind of bulbs I need to get from DDM (bulb on left is stock bulb and bulb on right is the DDM H7).

  7. Nice job. What size LEDs did you get?

    I have MK-I lights and a stock bumper and I would probably put the LEDs under the headlights, possibly in the grill. How do they attach?

    I got the 12 LED strips. The strips come with double sided tape, and I always use clear silicone to seal the edges.

    A good place to pick up switched power under the hood is to tie in to the heated washer outlets up by the battery. They work fine for low current loads like the LED driving lights.

  8. After having very good experiences with the custom dynamics "Tru Flex" weather-proof LED strips in 2-3 other vehicles, I decided to attempt them on the 996. I was looking for a place to mount them that was unusual and also a natural look, as well as make the concealed routing of the wires easy. Here is what I came up with.

    Wires are routed underneath the headlight, up through the frunk, into the cabin where I tapped the smartphone outlet for switched power with a 5 amp in-line fuse. Everything is tucked away and shrink-wrapped and no wiring can be seen. I have to seal the strips with silicone, but the job is almost done.

  9. My dog hates the rear tunnel that divides the two seats. He is a 90 lb golden and doesn't fit in one seat and the tunnel makes it awkward and hard for him. I was wondering if there was a way to make the rear section a full flatbed? Maybe "fill-in" the two seat bottoms completely? Or some sort of end-to-end "cover" that goes over the tunnel? Seems like a goofy question, but I would get more use out of the car if the dog could come (else I have to take the truck on trips).

  10. Hey guys,

    Here is the background: I had the steering wobble at 65-70 mph and THREE different shops tried to road force balance the wheel/tire with no luck. They all confirmed the front tires were "marginal" (tire shop speak for defective) and could not be balanced 100%. The tires are brand new as far as tread wear goes, but they seem to be defective. Well anyway, the third shop was able to isolate it to the front left tire as the particularly bad one. He took me back and showed me the tire spinning on the machine and there was quite a bit of lateral movement on the rubber.

    But he was able to add weights to 3 different places on the inside and outside of the wheel and get it balanced. The car was running smooth with no vibrations for a few days but now the vibes are back. But they seem to come and go randomly, which is what puzzles me. If its an out of balance tire, shouldnt it always be vibrating as opposed to every now and then?

    Alignment was done recently and front end was checked, so pretty sure its just the tire issue. I ordered a replacement rosso corsa from Tire Rack, but was curious if anyone had any ideas on what this gremlin could be.

    Reviews seemed good so I ordered it. It arrived and I installed it last week and so far, very happy with it. It has 3 adjustable pivot points to get the height/angle desired and came with a bracket for my Escort 9500. I thought I'd share in case anyone is looking for a good inexpensive mirror mount.

  12. Hey guys,

    I searched and some hits said the low beam is a D1S bulb, but I also found some hits for H11? Can anyone confirm what type of low beam bulbs are in a 2003 C4S?

    I have the projector lamps, but they don't seem to be HIDs. Did the 03's not come with HIDs? I want to put in a plug and play HID kit (bulbs and ballasts) - have done this on my motorcycle and truck (both came with projectors from factory) and have been very happy.

  13. I searched and it only turned up two hits on car cover and neither of them answered my question. I know this is sacrilege, but my motorcycle fleet keeps on growing (out of control) and taking up space in the garage, so I am considering leaving the car outside. Are there good outdoor-use car covers that folks would recommend that would offer decent protection from the elements while also not scratching the car? Please let me know,
