  1. I took a break from searching and cleaned up the leaves in my yard. I searched after the break and found this: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...y+carrier\ It looks like I'll have to remove a few screws, a nut and a clip to complete my installation.
  2. I've searched for more information on this topic, but I think I'm missing some basic information. I have a 2000 base Boxster and I'm planning to install a Homelink device using these instructions: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=23304 Some of the instructions are also in this post: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=23307 because the author was installing foot well lighting and the Homelink at the same time. I have assembled and tested the device, but before I start taking apart the car to install it, I need to make sure I understand how to tap into the power at the relay carrier above the driver's foot well. I connected my power for the Homelink and the dimmer switch to (2) -- 999.650.320.22 -- connectors. The are for contacting the bridge/bridge plug in the relay carrier. Based on some other posts, it seems like I am going to have to loosen the relay carrier to do this. Can anyone provide instructions or links to other posts that show how this is done? I need step-by-step basic instructions if possible. Thanks

  6. Sorry to "resurrect" such an old post. I have the parts coming for this project. I was wondering if anyone in the Richmond, VA area has done this and would be available to assist. I haven't started yet, but I may have some issues making connections "directly to the appropriate bridge plugs ("BS") and ground point ("GP")." I may just cheat and power it from the phone power cord, but I prefer Q-Ship's more elegant approach. I have a Homelink console from a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer on the way. It appears very similar to the 2005 unit Q-Ship used ($19.99 plus $11 shipping.) The Targa switch is the priciest item - $27.

That amp is not a real upgrade over the four-channel amp you have. Here is an option for an iPod adapter: http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=1010 There are a few others. I think Becker (the supplier for the factory system) also makes one that powers the iPod. A search on amplifier and audio here and on 986forum.com will yield many opinions and options. Good luck.

  9. Also look for cars for sale with a hard top. Contact the owner and ask if they will sell the top separately. I was able to do that for a Miata hard top. I found my Boxster hard top on eBay.
  10. I found mine on eBay, but I've also seen them for sale in the classified section of this site, 986forum.com and Porsche Pete's Boxster Board. You may also see one on Craigslist from time-to-time. I was advised that there is a dealer in Florida that has some that are "take offs" from the cars of owners who relocated there from the North. I did not verify this, so it may be a myth. Here are a few tips I gleaned while I was on the hunt 3 years ago: A top from a 2005 and later Boxster (also referred to as a 987) will not fit your car. Arctic Silver must be the most popular color available. Prices are lower in the spring and early summer. If you see someone selling a car with a hard top, offer to buy the top separately. This will allow the seller to reduce the price of the car. His or her net proceeds may be greater than if the car and top were sold together. You will need items called "spin locks" to attach the top securely to the car. This forum contains instructions for installing them. You can search for the info. Be prepared to travel to pick up your top. They are difficult and expensive to ship and most sellers don't want to fool with it. I paid $610 for my top, but I think the going rate is more like $1000-1500. Be willing to pay more for a top that matches your car because painting it to match will probably cost $300-500 and won't be as good. Good luck. Prices for Boxsters sure have come down since I bought mine.
  11. If the 996 is like the 986, there is a socket behind the driver's seat that accepts the plug. there is a small plastic cover over it that you will need to flip up.
  12. How difficult is it to remove the convertible top cover? I scratched mine while installing my hard top (I'm still kicking myself) and for several reasons it might be easier for me to just drop off that piece for repair. Does anyone know where I can find a step-by-step set of instructions?
  13. Other than this: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...c=10070&hl= which you probably saw when I posted it on the 986Forum, I can't think of too much else. I know I had a very difficult time when I first installed my top. (It was a very bad feeling since I was about 300 miles from home.) I think the technique that finally worked for me was this: 1. The seller and I stood on opposite sides of the car. 2. We aligned the top with the windshield header. 3. We pressed the spinlocks down into the receivers and turned the handles while pushing down on the back of the top. I'm beginning to wonder if the pressure might have forced the top to align to the shape of my car, but I'm not advocating that you use brute force to make it fit. Here are some "thinking out loud" ideas: 1. Was the top ever dropped or involved in some type of accident? 2. Is something causing the spin locks to be out of alignment? 3. Were the spinlock inserts installed correctly in your car? If I recall correctly there are different inserts for each side of the car. Did your dealer sell you one of each or two identical parts? 4. Have you asked someone else to look at it? Even if they are not a Porsche enthusiast, a fresh look from someone who is mechanically inclined may point out something you missed. Good luck. I know from experience this can be frustrating. If you are anywhere near Richmond, VA I'd be happy to take a look at it.

  15. I have the PNP kit. I read posts on several forums and most people seemed to think the PNP kit was better. Unfortunately I could not find two local folks to do a side-by-side comparison of both kits so I can't say which sounds better based on experience. At the time, Harvey's kit was less expensive and since he worked near me, I could pick it up and save shipping costs. I later upgraded from a four channel to a six channel amp and Harvey provided me the extra wiring harness at no extra charge - even though I had bought his kit more than a year ago.   16. If you break a clip, it can be replaced fairly easily and inexpensively. (Not that I ever had to do it.)

  18. My neighbor has a 993 cabriolet that I have admired since she bought it. We were talking the other day and she asked me if I knew whether a hard top was available for it. I assumed Porsche made one, but I thought someone on this board would know for sure. Where's the best place to find one? I found a hard top for my Boxster on eBay and I see tops for 996s and 986's for sale fairly frequently on Craigslist and the various Porsche boards. I've never seen a 993 hard top for sale, but I haven't been looking. If someone has a picture of a 993 with a hard top, please post it. My neighbor's car is red so a picture of a red one would be even better. Better still - does anyone have a red one for sale? Regards
  19. That sounds like the problem I had. The shop replaced my vent tube, purge valve and charcoal canister. I've filled the car about 6 times since the last repair without a recurrence of the problem. Good luck.

  22. I broke one of the locking levers on my windstop. I bought the replacement part, but I need to determine the best way to remove a piece of the old locking clip from the windstop.   23. For folks with the CDR-23 (MOST Bus) systems, the MP-3 integration is pricey. Some people think that CD's sound better than MP-3's.
  24. Here's the item number for one on eBay now: 260209150285 It was for sale when I bought mine. If that doesn't work, search for "Porsche amp" on eBay. I installed my six-channel amp last Saturday. I think it makes a noticeable improvement in listening experience.
